Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The term “psychometry” is a type of extrasensory perception which allows a “psychic claimants” or “sensitive” to receive impressions using a physical object. One hundred fifty seven subjects were interviewed, but 120 took part at this research project, both sexes 67% females and 33% males (age
range 18–78; Mean= 46.48; SD= 14.05). The research project explored if susceptibility hypnosis, dissociation scores and personality characteristics, such as extroversion, neuroticism and the sixteen factors scores of the 16PF correlated with psi-scores of both groups, subjects who claim psiability (called “psi-abilitiers”) and subjects who claim psi-experiences (psi-experiencers), re-clustered using the Anomalous Experiences Inventory (AEI). Both groups were tested by four psi-tests: (1) four objects-target were used in order to obtain (a) free statements compared with (b) forced choise (anatomical or physical characteristics) response tests. The results were evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively; (2) personality tests pooled were used to obtain personality profiles (high and low extroversion and neuroticism scores combined) in order to design an ESP test using name and surname; and (3) “psychometry” test was compared with a “nonpsychometry” test (objects vs. pictures-target). The purpose of a quantitative evaluation of the psychics’ statements is to establish if these statements are more accurate than expected by chance. Statistical data of the psi tests are being proccesed. Briefly, our results showed that psiabilitiers claim to be very spiritual, had many psi experiences, scored high extraversion and they are dominant and self-sufficient.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Ganzfeld stimulation is associated to an increase of attention to internal imagery. Investigators have suggested the association to develop an “experimental–hypnagogic” technique to facilitate the study of hypnagogic imagery, an association such as the ganzfeld technique. Three experiments were carried out by us. The first one, non-ganzfeld condition is compared with ganzfeld technique. Both conditions were counter-balanced. One hundred thirty-eight subjects attended two trials of GESP. A CD–R contained 3,500 high–resolution color pictures was used as image-targets. This experiment offered some support to the claim that ganzfeld stimulation is psi conducive. A significant difference between both condition were obtained, in a positive direction to the Ganzfeld condition (p< .0003). The difference was also significant (expected= 25%; ganzfeld= 41.3%, p< .001 vs. nonganzfeld= 27.5, z-score= 1.71; p= .043, one-tailed). The second one reports a relationship between personality factors and ESP scores. Neuroticism and Extraversion scores (using two personality inventories) were correlated with ESP scores. Though this study did not show significant results to E or N and the 16PF factors, cholerics obtained more hits than did melancholics (four personality profiles arise from a combination of N and E scores). The third one compared auditory with visual stimuli under ganzfeld condition. Musical styles were chosen as targets. A part of the early sample (N= 54) attended two GESP sessions. Color pictures and 112 themes on mp3 were randomized each ganzfeld session. Musical- (p < .008) and visual-target condition (p= .001) in a positive direction for the visual target condition, obtained psi-hitting.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Thirteen high hypnotizable subjects participated in live hypnotic induction that included deep hypnotic relaxation, recollection of emotionally neutral, positive (P) and negative (N) past events. Eyes-closed waking state was considered as a baseline condition. Traditional spectral analysis of EEG (19 sites) was applied. Heart rate and skin conduction changes under hypnosis paralleled the anticipated increase of arousal level from relaxation to inner imagery and further to P and N emotion recollection, thus verifying the emotional experience. The observed decrease of ongoing EEG oscillations and coherence within all frequency bands under hypnosis session may reflect the specificity of hypnotic state as an altered state of consciousness. Mental imagery led to pronounced blockage of alpha oscillations over the posterior scalp area. The generalized increase of EEG spectral power (SP) was observed during emotional conditions. Delta and theta SP increase was more pronounced during N emotions, whereas alpha SP increase – during P emotions. Beta2 and gamma1 SP was higher at medial and right frontal, central and parietal sites during P emotions as compared to negative ones. Emotion-related patterns of coherence (COH) changes were frequency as well as hemispheric-specific depending on emotional valence. P emotions elicited more pronounced right-hemispheric COH increase within gamma bands. N emotions led to greater increase of left-hemispheric COH within theta, alpha3, and beta1 bands. EEG changes in waking control session had the same direction but were less pronounced than in hypnosis. The obtained results corroborate and extend the existing findings of the role of EEG rhythms in hypnotic state and emotion production.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
What is it like to have a body? The present study takes a psychometric approach to this question. We collected structured introspective reports of the rubber hand illusion, to systematically investigate the structure of bodily self-consciousness. Participants observed a rubber hand that was stroked either synchronously or asynchronously with their own hand and then made proprioceptive judgments of the location of their own hand and used Likert scales to rate their agreement or disagreement with 27 statements relating to their subjective experience of the illusion. Principal components analysis of this data revealed four major components of the experience across conditions, which we interpret as: embodiment of rubber hand, loss of own hand, movement, and affect. In the asynchronous condition, an additional fifth component, deafference, was found. Secondary analysis of the embodiment of runner hand component revealed three subcomponents in both conditions: ownership, location, and agency. The ownership and location components were independent significant predictors of proprioceptive biases induced by the illusion. These results suggest that psychometric tools may provide a rich method for studying the structure of conscious experience, and point the way towards an empirically rigorous phenomenology.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Self-report measures are often used in research and clinical practise as they efficiently gather a large amount of information. With growing numbers of self-report measures available to target single constructs, it is important to revisit one's choice of instrument to be sure that the most valid and reliable measure is employed. The Maudsley Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory (MOCI) and the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised (OCI-R) were administered to 223 female participants: 30 inpatients with anorexia nervosa (AN), 62 community cases with AN, 69 community cases weight restored from AN and 62 healthy controls. Both measures distinguished between clinical and healthy groups; however, the OCI-R showed superior internal reliability. Additionally, the OCI-R measures six (to the MOCI's four) obsessive-compulsive constructs, and uses a more sensitive response format (likert scale vs. categorical). It is recommended that the OCI-R be employed as the self-report instrument of choice for assessing obsessive-compulsive pathology in those with AN.

Measuring self-report obsessionality in anorexia nervosa: Maudsley obsessive-compulsive inventory (MOCI) or obsessive-compulsive inventory-revised (OCI-R)?

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Self-report measures are often used in research and clinical practise as they efficiently gather a large amount of information. With growing numbers of self-report measures available to target single constructs, it is important to revisit one's choice of instrument to be sure that the most valid and reliable measure is employed. The Maudsley Obsessive–Compulsive Inventory (MOCI) and the Obsessive–Compulsive Inventory-Revised (OCI-R) were administered to 223 female participants: 30 inpatients with anorexia nervosa (AN), 62 community cases with AN, 69 community cases weight restored from AN and 62 healthy controls. Both measures distinguished between clinical and healthy groups; however, the OCI-R showed superior internal reliability. Additionally, the OCI-R measures six (to the MOCI's four) obsessive–compulsive constructs, and uses a more sensitive response format (likert scale vs. categorical). It is recommended that the OCI-R be employed as the self-report instrument of choice for assessing obsessive–compulsive pathology in those with AN.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
1628 people (63% female; age range 18-80+) began the survey. Types of synaesthesia varied in incidence and occur under a variety of circumstances. The Synaesthesia Experiences Questionnaire (SEQ) was not normally distributed. It was internally reliable (Cronbach’s a = .98) and loaded onto 1 factor. SEQ scores correlated with Anomalous Experiences Inventory scores, rho= .49, p< .0001. Those who have traditional paranormal experiences scored higher on the SEQ than non-experiencers. SEQ scores correlated with positive schizotypy, rho= .46, p= .001. There was no systematic relationship between synaesthesia and well-being. This relationship appears to be mediated by schizotypy cluster membership. Twenty-seven synaesthetes (3 male and 24 female, age range 18-70) were age and gender matched to 27 controls. Each completed the SEQ, the TimeStyleTM inventory (Fortunato & Furey, 2011), the synaesthesia subscale of the Tellegen Absorption Scale, Bem’s precognitive memory task (2011), a Mental time travel task (D’Argenbeau & Van Der Linden, 2004) and an interview. There was no evidence for psi in the combined group (d = .05), the controls (d= -.014) or the synaesthetes (d= -.00). Neither the difference in scoring between synaesthetes and controls or correlation between scoring on the SEQ and psi were significant. Synaesthetic associators scored higher on psi than projectors (z= -2.00, p= .047; post hoc). Future thinking correlated with scoring on the SEQ, rho = .35, p =.011 but not with psi. Past thinking correlated with psi (r = -.277, p= .043). Mental time travel did not relate to psi but some variables were stronger in synaesthetes. An IPA suggests that ability to represent is important in synaesthesia and anomalous experiences.

Exploring the relationship between the synesthesias and anomalous experiences
Publication year: 2012
URL:
http://www.consciousness.arizona.edu/documents/TSC2012CCS_BookofAbstracts_forweb2012.pdf
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Dr. Simmonds-Moore will discuss the idea that synesthesia (or the synesthesias) may underpin a variety of anomalous experiences, including ESP. For example, several authors have explored the idea that synesthesia may be associted with anomalous experiences (including the aura and out of body experiences). In addition, those who are psychometrically anomaly-prone (scoring high on personality dimensions which are more likely to report anomalous experiences, score high on measures of paranormal belief and potentially to score higher on laboratory based measures of ESP; namely positive schizotypy and related variables) may be more likely to experience synesthesia. However, the literature is sparse in terms of the explicit exploration of the relationships between synesthesia and anomalous experiences. In addition, where researchers have considered these relationships, they have often employed the Synesthesia subscale of the Tellegen Absorption scale to assess synesthetic experiences in the general population, which has some limitations. There are several features associated with synesthesia which suggest that strong synesthetes may perform better at a laboratory based ESP test (including consiousness binding, a greater ability to consciously perceive weak stimuli and better episodic memory and visual-spatial skills for some forms of synesthesia). An ongoing two-part research project will be described which will examine the relationship between synesthesia and anomalous experiences. In an online survey investigation, a synesthesia questionnaire has been developed to measure the full range of these types of experience. Respondents will also complete questionnaires about their anomalous experiences (including ESP experiences), personality and mental health. This will allow for a systematic evaluation of the incidence of the synesthesias and the relationship between synesthesia and anomaly-proneness in the general population. In a second investigation, a laboratory experiment will investigate the idea that those who are strong synesthetes may perform better at an ESP task and that they may have better episodic and other memory ability than other people, which may underpin ESP ability. This study will compare performance on a mental time travel task and on a version of Bem’s precognitive memory task to compare performance between synesthetes and a group of matched controls.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The Halstead Category Test (HCT) is a neuropsychological measure that taps into multiple domains of complex non-verbal reasoning and cognitive flexibility, but only yields a single error score, limiting the clinical use of the test. Currently, several authors have proposed additional subscales in order to increase the clinical utility of the HCT. The purpose of this study is to present the new scales and scoring criteria of HCT, as well as to analyze the construct validity of the new scales recently developed to assess specifics domains of executive function: cognitive flexibility, failure to maintain cognitive set, perseveration and memory. Using a sample of Portuguese undergraduate students aged 19-50 years, we will relate the values obtained in the new scales of the HCT with well-established neuropsychological measures (Trail making A and B, Test of Non-Verbal Intelligence, California Learning Verbal Test and Symbol Digit). After data analysis, and based in previous results, we hope to find that the new scales of HCT (perseveration, set of loss, categorization and memory), show clearly a significant associations with the neuropsychological measures used in this study. These results will be compared with international data, with the important starting point for the clinical use of the new scales.

Preliminary results on the psychometric validation of the Portuguese version of the Externalizing Inventory
Publication year: 2013
URL:
http://www.ehu.es/gip/publicaciones/congresos/2013/ECPA_donostia_(programa).pdf
Contents: ABSTRACT:
The Externalizing Inventory proposes to evaluate a coherent spectrum of individual differences which involves a disinhibitory tendency ranging from normative personality traits to psychopathology, and including several negative behaviors, such as aggressiveness and impulsivity, substance use or anti-social conduct. Its Portuguese version was evaluated using a sample of 477 male and female higher education students, to ascertain for reliability and construct validity. Most of the subscales of the instrument obtained good internal consistency values and adequate fit indicators for the evaluation of a single factor, using confirmatory factor analysis. They were grouped by exploratory factor analysis into five components: antisocial vulnerability, vulnerability to substance use, vulnerability to impulse control, prossocial attitudes, and depersonalizing tendency. These components are very similar in content to those found for the original and the Brazilian version of the instrument, concurring to the internal structure validity of the Portuguese version. Adequate validity in relation to measures of aggression and risk behaviors was also found. These results provide evidence on the preliminary psychometric qualities of the Portuguese version or the Externalizing Inventory, which may become a useful measure for evaluating clinical, forensic or normative samples and better understand what may constitute a vulnerability to psychopathology.

Anomalous remote diagnosis: Mental and motor psi impressions under iconic representation of the person-target
Publication year: 2013
Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
A common procedure to encourage self-claimed psychics is to use iconic representations (photographs) as inductors. The aim of this study was to compare 2 conditions – “mental” and “motor” – using images of the faces of persons as targets. Specifically, we wanted to determine if the scores were different based on 2 kinds of stimulus (diseased and healthy). Participants were clustered as psychics and nonpsychics. The sample consisted of 224 participants, recruited through an e-mail list, and their ages ranged from 18 to 75 (M = 44.19 years old). Eight photographs included 4 of subjects “sick” with a medically diagnosed disease and 4 of healthy persons (the “controls”). All of the images of sick persons were taken from 6 months to 2 years before the diseases were discovered. The results of the 2 procedures were significantly above chance: the mean “mental” score = 2.32 (p < .001, 1-tailed), and the mean “motor” score = 2.15 (p = .016, 1-tailed). A second analysis was carried out to determine if the mental and motor procedures led to different scores; indeed, mental scored significantly higher than motor (the mean “mental” score = 2.32 vs. the mean “motor” score = 2.15 (p < .001).

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The article presents a psychometry-based qualitative analysis on a subjective interpretation of the material presented to group of non-psychics and self-claimed psychics. The study consisted of several sessions, in which the participants conveyed their impressions from pairs of samples. The participants were compared on their number of psi-hits from mean chance expectations. It was indicated in the study that the participants with psychometric psi ability, being able to pick-up impression from an object, showed significant variability in their psi-hits.

Psychometric study of the Beliefs About Appearance Scale (BAAS) in a Portuguese sample
Publication year: 2015
URL:
https://isas.conference-services.net/reports/template/onetextabstract.xml?xsl=template/onetextabstract.xsl&conferenceID=4313&abstractID=918971
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
According to Cognitive Psychology, Beliefs About Appearance are important for a diversity of body image related clinical conditions (e.g., eating disorders, sexual dysfunctions). The current work presents a validation process of the 20 item, four dimension, Beliefs About Appearance Scale (BAAS-Spangle & Stice, 2001) in a community sample. Firstly we conducted a CFA in the total sample (N=378) to test the original structure and the results did not reveal a good fit for the data (x2/gl= 4,827; CFI=,815; TLI= ,793; RMSEA= ,109; SRMR= ,0687). Therefore we divide the sample in two subsamples (1 and 2). Firstly we conducted a AFE with Varimax rotation (n= 197- Sample 1) that revealed a three factor solution (Factor 1 related to attributions and expectations based on appearance- a= ,854; Factor 2 related to emotional impact of own appearance- a= ,806; and Factor 3 related to interpersonal impact of own appearance- a= ,706) retaining 10 items. Secondly with developed a CFA to test this structure with subsample 2 (n= 181). This CFA revealed a good fit for the data (x2/gl= 1,364; CFI=,985; TLI= ,979; RMSEA= ,048; SRMR= ,043). All Factors (F1,F 2 and F3) presented acceptable values of convergent validity with the subscale Global Body Dissatisfaction of the Body Attitudes Test (Probst, Vandereycken, Van Coppenolle, &. Vanderlinden, 1995) and divergent validity with the Sexual Pleasure Scale (Sanchez, Crocker & Boike, 2005). As for its predictive validity F1 predicts a single item on body dissatisfaction (R2=.20); F2 predicts self-reported BMI (R2=.5), F 1 e F2 predict body appearance cognitive distraction during sexual activity (R2=.28) and F3 did not predict any of the variables considered in the current study. We only found Gender differences in F2. The results indicate that a short version of the BAAS has good psychometric properties in a Portuguese community sample.

Title: BIAL Grants
Start date: 1994
History:
In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Reward-related gustatory and psychometric predictors of weight loss following bariatric surgery: a multicenter cohort study

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
BAKGROUND
Reward sensitivity has been proposed as a potential mediator of outcomes for bariatric surgery.
OBJECTIVES
We aimed to determine whether gustatory and psychometric measures of reward-related feeding are predictors of bariatric-induced weight loss.
METHODS
A multicenter longitudinal cohort study was conducted in patients scheduled for bariatric surgery (surgical group), assessed at baseline and 2 follow-up assessments. Predictions of % weight loss from baseline (%WL) according to baseline gustatory measures, including intensity and pleasantness ratings of sweet and other tastants, and psychometric measures of reward-related feeding behavior, including hedonic hunger scores, were assessed with multivariable linear regression. Exploratory analyses were conducted to test for associations between %WL and changes in gustatory and psychophysical measures, as well as for comparisons with data from patients on the surgery waiting list (control group).
RESULTS
We included 212 patients, of whom 96 in the surgical group and 50 in the control group were prospectively assessed. The groups were similar at baseline and, as expected, bariatric surgery resulted in higher %WL (BTreatment-Time = 2.4; 95% CI: 2.1–2.8; P < 0.0001). While variation in gustatory measures did not differ between groups, in the surgery group baseline sweet intensity predicted %WL at the primary endpoint (11 to 18 months postoperatively; ß = 0.2; B = 0.2, 95% CI: 0.02 to 0.3; P = 0.02), as did hedonic hunger scores (ß = -0.2; B = -2.0, 95% CI: -3.8 to -0.3; P = 0.02). Furthermore, at this endpoint, postsurgical reduction of sweet taste intensity and acceptance of sweet foods were associated with %WL (ß = -0.3; B = -3.5, 95% CI: -5.8 to -1.3; P = 0.003, and ß = -0.2; B = -4.7, 95% CI: -8.5 to -0.8; P = 0.02, respectively). The use of sweet intensity as a predictor of weight change was confirmed in another bariatric cohort.
CONCLUSIONS
Sweet intensity ratings and hedonic hunger scores predict %WL after surgery. The variability of sweet intensity ratings is also associated with %WL, further suggesting they may reflect physiological processes that are variably modulated by bariatric surgery, influencing clinical outcomes.
