Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Aim of the present project was to study and elucidate the neural mechanisms of blink and saccadic suppression by taking advantage of intracranial electrophysiology. We found a characteristic biphasic broadband gamma decrease-increase pattern over early visual areas, during both blinks and saccades.
A high-frequency spectral magnitude decrease and low-frequency magnitude increase during blinking was also recorded over parietal cortex, temporal cortex and particularly robust over prefrontal cortex. The high-frequency spectral magnitude decrease and low-frequency magnitude increase recorded during eye movement execution over early visual areas and prefrontal cortex likely reflects neural correlates of a top-down signal associated with visual suppression. Furthermore, we found a significant saccade-related decrease in the gamma band of V1 approx. 40 ms prior to saccade onset, i.e., in a time window that was completely non-overlapping with saccade onset. This result supports the hypothesis, because a bottom-up mechanism could not yet function at that time.
Saccades more than blinks however elicited a late, narrower-banded gamma response over early visual areas that may reflect the processing of new visual input after saccadic movement to a new eye position. A comparable pattern with a phasic broadband gamma augmentation followed by a more narrow-banded sustained gamma response was previously found in the primate visual cortex during visual stimulation with Gabor stimuli.
We conclude that early visual areas, including striate- and extra-striate cortices, as well as areas of higher visual processing are involved in the processing of visual awareness.

Magicians utilize many techniques for misdirecting audience attention away from the secret sleight of a trick. One technique is to ask an audience member to participate in a trick either physically by asking them to choose a card or cognitively by having them keep track of a card. While such audience participation is an established part of most magic the cognitive mechanisms by which it operates are unknown. Failure to detect changes to objects while passively viewing magic tricks has been shown to be conditional on the changing feature being irrelevant to the current task. How change blindness operates during interactive tasks is unclear but preliminary evidence suggests that relevance of the changing feature may also play a role (Triesch et al., 2003). The present study created a simple on-line card trick inspired by Triesch et al.’s (2003) that allowed playing cards to be instantaneously replaced without distraction or occlusion as participants were either actively sorting the cards (Doing condition) or watching another person perform the task (Watching conditions). Participants were given one of three sets of instructions. The relevance of the card color to the task increased across the three instructions. During half of the trials a card changed color (but retained its number) as it was moving to the stack. Participants were instructed to immediately report such changes. Analysis of the probability of reporting a change revealed that actively performing the sorting task led to more missed changes than passively watching the same task but only when the changing feature was irrelevant to the sorting task. If the feature was relevant during either the pick-up or put-down action change detection was as good as during the watching block. Estimating the time remaining for certain objects to approach us in specific points in space is part of our daily routines. Extracting spatiotemporal information in order to respond to looming objects has been widely studied in the visual modality. Moreover, several studies tested the effect of visual stimuli’s occlusion in performance. However, modality may affect the role of different perceptual cues. Our goal is to understand the role of auditory and visual modalities in the perception of looming events. We found that participants were quite accurate in estimating the time remaining for an auditory looming stimulus to pass or contact them. Interestingly, we found a change in the perceptual strategy with higher uncertainty on the task. In a time-to-passage task, with a 50% stimulus’ occlusion, the final distance of the stimuli was more informative for the judgment than temporal variables. We are especially interested in understanding the cues that most contribute to participants’ performance on both visual and auditory modalities. We aimed to understand if continuous or intermittent information influence the accuracy and precision of passage’s judgment. This way, we would control whether variations on spatial and/or temporal information has an impact in the estimation of time remaining for passage.

It has been hypothesized that neural synchrony underlies perceptual coherence. The hypothesis of loss of central perceptual coherence has been proposed to be at the origin of abnormal cognition in autism spectrum disorders and Williams syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder linked with autism, and a clearcut model for impaired central coherence. We took advantage of this model of impaired holistic processing to test the hypothesis that loss of neural synchrony plays a separable role in visual integration using EEG and a set of experimental tasks requiring coherent integration of local elements leading to 3-D face perception. A profound reorganization of brain activity was identified. Neural synchrony was reduced across stimulus conditions, and this was associated with increased amplitude modulation at 25-45 Hz. This combination of a dramatic loss of synchrony despite increased oscillatory activity is strong evidence that synchrony underlies central coherence. This is the first time, to our knowledge, that dissociation between amplitude and synchrony is reported in a human model of impaired perceptual coherence, suggesting that loss of phase coherence is more directly related to disruption of holistic perception.

Congenital deafness causes large changes in the auditory cortex structure and function, such that without early childhood cochlear-implant, profoundly deaf children do not develop intact, high-level, auditory functions. But how is auditory cortex organization affected by congenital, prelingual, and long standing deafness? Does the large-scale topographical organization of the auditory cortex develop in people deaf from birth? And is it retained despite cross-modal plasticity? We identified, using fMRI, topographic tonotopy-based functional connectivity (FC) structure in humans in the core auditory cortex, its extending tonotopic gradients in the belt and even beyond that. These regions show similar FC structure in the congenitally deaf throughout the auditory cortex, including in the language areas. The topographic FC pattern can be identified reliably in the vast majority of the deaf, at the single subject level, despite the absence of hearing-aid use and poor oral language skills. These findings suggest that large-scale tonotopic-based FC does not require sensory experience to develop, and is retained despite life-long auditory deprivation and cross-modal plasticity. Furthermore, as the topographic FC is retained to varying degrees among the deaf subjects, it may serve to predict the potential for auditory rehabilitation using cochlear implants in individual subjects.

Rhythm and melody are at the basis of music organization. They enable acoustic patterns to be organized in highly structured auditory phrases that can effortlessly be perceived, recognized and comprehended in our mind/brain. Scientific evidence suggests that musical rhythm perception is a complex process that involves more than the auditory cortex, and raises the possibility that rhythm processing is part of a wider mechanism that may also be involved in language production and perception. As such, rhythm perception is more than a component of musicality, and the failure to perceive rhythm might be relevant in domains other than music. In order to better understand the development of rhythm perception, the present study examined agerelated changes in the perception of rhythm while exploring the impact of sex and prematurity. Musical excerpts varying in rhythm only (same note percussion phrases) or in melody and rhythm (rhythmic and rhythmicmelodic sets respectively) were presented to children aged 6 to 13 years (N = 177, of which 21 with gestational age less than 37 weeks; 103 female) and young adults aged 18/19 years (N = 29, 4 with < 37 weeks’ gestational age; 27 female). Participants listened to pairs of musical excerpts (20 stimuli pairs in each set), and indicated whether they sounded the same or different using a grid in a pencil-paper response. In each set, eight pairs were identical and twelve were different (the difference was always in rhythm). The pairs of rhythmic patterns were the same in both sets. The results revealed an age-related progression in accuracy that differed in rhythmic and rhythmic-melodic excerpts: there was a small advantage of rhythm-only pairs that reached adult-like level at 11
years, whereas performance gains in the rhythmic-melodic pairs continued till adulthood. There was no main effect of sex. Prematurity was associated with a performance disadvantage that appeared to decrease with age; however, the small number of subjects precludes drawing firm conclusions on the role of prematurity. We compare our results with findings from earlier studies and discuss how both contribute to elucidate rhythm perception and factors that impact on its development.
