    • The Boolean operator AND between the terms is assumed by default. If you enter the words European Union in the search box, the system returns all records in which both words occur, regardless of their order.
    • When entering a set of words in quotes, e.g "european union", all records containing the literal term "European Union" will be retrieved.
  • Search by access fields (e.g. author, title, etc.):
    • To direct your search, choose the field in which you want to search the word or expression.
    • Search in the field assumes by default the expression in quotes, e.g. European union will retrieve all records containing the literal term "European Union"
  • To perform more complex searches, additional words or expressions may be added.
  • If you want to refine the search results, you can always access the link "search" in the upper left corner of the page of search results.
  • The search engine is not case sensitive. For example, the word congress has the same meaning that Congress or CONGRESS.
  • To truncate your search expression, use the $ character
  • You can filter the results of your search by a date or date range, filling the appropriate boxes.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The term “psychometry” is a type of extrasensory perception which allows a “psychic claimants” or “sensitive” to receive impressions using a physical object. One hundred fifty seven subjects were interviewed, but 120 took part at this research project, both sexes 67% females and 33% males (age
range 18–78; Mean= 46.48; SD= 14.05). The research project explored if susceptibility hypnosis, dissociation scores and personality characteristics, such as extroversion, neuroticism and the sixteen factors scores of the 16PF correlated with psi-scores of both groups, subjects who claim psiability (called “psi-abilitiers”) and subjects who claim psi-experiences (psi-experiencers), re-clustered using the Anomalous Experiences Inventory (AEI). Both groups were tested by four psi-tests: (1) four objects-target were used in order to obtain (a) free statements compared with (b) forced choise (anatomical or physical characteristics) response tests. The results were evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively; (2) personality tests pooled were used to obtain personality profiles (high and low extroversion and neuroticism scores combined) in order to design an ESP test using name and surname; and (3) “psychometry” test was compared with a “nonpsychometry” test (objects vs. pictures-target). The purpose of a quantitative evaluation of the psychics’ statements is to establish if these statements are more accurate than expected by chance. Statistical data of the psi tests are being proccesed. Briefly, our results showed that psiabilitiers claim to be very spiritual, had many psi experiences, scored high extraversion and they are dominant and self-sufficient.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The five senses of which we are most familiar share at least one common property: they are more sensitive to changes then they are to the steady state at their sensory “front ends.” For example, we can see a blinking faint light more easily than the same intensity of a steady light. If Rhine were correct when he coined the term Extrasensory Perception, at least with the sensory part, then there must be some “thing” that correlates with anomalous cognition (a.k.a., remote viewing) more when it is changing then when it is not. Based upon a number of remote viewing trials against energetic targets during the US Government funded program, it was suggested that the “thing” was entropy. To date, there have been five separate
experiments each of which demonstrated that the quality of anomalous cognition correlates significantly with the gradient of Shannon entropy of the photographic target and not with the entropy itself.
The combined correlation is 0.294 with a 95% confidence interval of [0.127, 0.363]. This result is highly suggestive of a sensory system. Decision Augmentation Theory applied to the random number generator database has demonstrated that the RNG results are best described by an application of anomalous cognition rather than psychokinesis. So in an earlier BIAL Foundation funded study, we attempted to manipulated pseudo random sequences by varying their inherent entropic gradients to very high values. We expected to show a strong correlation of hitting in accordance with the anomalous cognition results shown above. This study failed to demonstrate the expected correlation. It turned out that the feedback displays were insensitive to the entropic gradients of the underlying sequences. In the study reported here, we corrected this oversight; that is, the entropic gradient of the feedback displays in a pseudo random number
generator exactly matched that of the driving sequence. Surprisingly, this approach also failed to demonstrate the expected correlation. We will discuss this finding and explore its implication.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Previously we noted that the use of the umbrella term ‘psi’ to encompass both ESP and PK phenomena implies that they share some common features and perhaps reflect a single underlying process, but this has not yet been tested systematically. We identified a number of the more promising variables that suggested either that ESP and PK performance patterns were similar or were distinct. We hoped to replicate those patterns using a specially designed protocol that allowed us to test both ESP and PK in comparable conditions and which controlled for possible expectancy effects.
After initial pilot testing, four experiments were conducted:
Study 1 compared personality covariates of performance for ESP and PK tasks. In terms of overall outcome the study was disappointing, with overall sums of ranks for finishing positions a little worse than mean
chance expectation. However, there were a number of interesting internal effects, particularly for prior experience and state and trait anxiety, which seemed to be consistent with previous findings.
Study 2 considered the effects of expectancy by comparing performance in an informed condition with that in a blind condition. The overall outcome was again disappointing, with sums of ranks very similar to those for Study 1. However, we did find that participants performed significantly better in the blind condition, suggesting that poor performance was not due to a disenchantment effect brought about by the use of deception. The internal effects noted in Study 1 were not strongly replicated here.
Study 3 considered the effects of arousal level upon performance. This was manipulated by instructing participants to adopt a relaxed/passive or aroused/active strategy, and by playing rousing or calming classical music. The overall outcome was somewhat better than previously and slightly (though not significantly) better than chance. No evidence was found for the suggestion that a more aroused state might be PK conducive but a relaxed state better for ESP functioning.
Study 4 focused on possible experimenter effects. Russell Davey conducted 20 trials, much as before, but Chris Roe conducted the other 20 trials. It was hypothesised that Roe’s participants might fare better since
Roe is a more experienced researcher and as its main designer and fundraiser has a greater ‘ownership’ of this project. We also included a questionnaire that asked about aspects of the experimenter-participant
interaction. There was a further improvement in the overall outcome. Roe’s participants fared better than Davey’s, suggestively so overall and significantly so for disguised ESP trials. A number of the interaction items correlated remarkably strongly with task performance.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The Ganzfeld ESP protocol has become one of the most common experimental procedures used in parapsychological research, despite inconsistencies in different meta-analysis questioning its reliability. Such inconsistencies may simply suggest a need to standardise the procedure but could also be due to our lack of theoretical understanding of how ESP might operate. Although practically nothing is known about how any information might be transferred, several potential mechanisms are generally considered to have been ruled out by theoretical considerations of the bandwidth required to transmit the complex information
required to identify the target. Such ‘mental radio’ models do have many problems - the low emissive capabilities of bio-systems, apparent ESP over large distances and degradation by noise - and this is generally taken to mean that ESP must not be a signal in classical terms. However, an alternative suggestion may be that no target-specific information is transferred at all. Instead, ‘signaling’ of a much simpler kind may play a vital role.
This study presented a model that could apply to cases of anomalous information transfer where there is some form of sensory feedback from receiver to sender. It proposes that a ‘psi stimulus’ is generated by a
sender in response to real-time feedback of target-relevant receiver mentation, this stimulus acting to reinforce current mentation by momentarily changing physiological arousal and so reducing the need for complex information transfer. Experimental evaluation of the model involved two extensions to the standard Ganzfeld ESP design: (1) in one condition the sender received false feedback of receiver mentation; (2) receiver skinconductance was recorded during mentation. No evidence of ESP was found based on target-rank (pi = 0.49) but the predicted skin-conductance response to target-relevant mentation was observed, with significantly higher arousal for relevant mentation than in baseline periods (p=0.04, 1-t). Arousal was increased in both conditions, indicating that the receiver’s physiological response related to the sender’s reactions and not directly to the target material. This could suggest that the process involved is more akin to micro/bioPK, with the sender influencing the receiver’s arousal at times of relevant mentation.

Impression and spontaneous blood flow change at the temporal lobe while guessing for a hidden figure
Publication year: 2005

http://psycnet.apa.org/psycinfo/2005-14012-001
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
In a previous study using near-infrared spectroscopy (Yoichi et al, 2002), the authors found spontaneous blood flow change often occurred at both temporal lobes while guessing for hidden figures (clairvoyant condition). This phenomenon was considered to have a relationship to the degree of impression formulation of figures. In the present study, the authors looked at details of the phenomenon. There were 14 participant volunteers. One trial consisted of a 3-minute guessing period and a 3-minute rest period, and 1 run consisted of 3 trials and 69 trials were done in total. The target figure was selected from 5 figures by a pseudo random number function. Then it was displayed on a CRT covered by a gray paper box. After the 3-minute guessing period, subjects gave their answers and degrees of impression formulation (3 degree method). The spontaneous blood flow change at the temporal lobe was observed in 10 trials. The degree of impression formulation was high when the change occurred (p<0.001, one-tail). The change also often occurred when subjects made their responses after guessing although the change did not relate to the degree of impression formulation. Ten guessing results were correct, but this number was not significant. Moreover, 3 of 10 correct trials were obtained when the spontaneous blood flow change occurred although it was not significant (p = 0.06, one-tail). The relationship between the correct response and the spontaneous blood flow change should be researched in further studies.

Brain blood flow change with functional near infrared spectroscopy while guessing
Publication year: 2006
Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
In a previous study using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (Yoichi et al, 2002), the authors found spontaneous blood flow change often occurred at both temporal lobes while guessing for hidden figures (clairvoyant condition). This phenomenon has a relationship to the degree of impression formulation of figures (Kokubo, et al., 2005). These studies were forced choice tests. In the present study, the authors researched the brain blood flow change in free-response guessing tests chiefly. Subjects were 11 healthy volunteers. Targets were geometric symbols, the inside of human body or a thing in a dark box. Brain blood flow was measured at frontal area and right temporal area while guessing the targets from 3 to 30 minutes. Results, star psychics showed the increase of blood flow at their prefrontal areas, not right temporal lobes. While the other subjects showed the increase of blood flow at their right temporal lobes, not frontal area. In case that the task was to guess the hidden visual targets, the activated areas of the brain of star psychics were different from ones of the other persons.

Publication year: 2006

http://connection.ebscohost.com/c/articles/26531642/remarkable-correspondences-between-ganzfeld-mentation-target-content-psychical-psychological-effect
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Remarkable correspondences between ganzfeld mentation and target content have been reported since the start of ganzfeld experiments in parapsychology. These correspondences may be due either to some form of' anomalous information transfer (e.g., telepathy) or to a cognitive illusion on the part of the perceiver. This paper presents 4 studies conducted in order to investigate which of these two possibilities is the more probable. In Study 1, an external judge in a ganzfeld experiment selected 20 short segments that showed most remarkable correspondences between ganzfeld mentation and film clip content while being blind to whether the chosen film clip had been used as a target or as a decoy. Only 6 of the segments showed correspondences between the mentation and the target, which is close to chance expectation level. In Study 2, 11 students rated the 6 correspondences that were ?hits? as being equally as impressive as the 14 that were ?misses.? In Studies 3 and 4, the possibility that the 14 correspondences that were ?misses? could have been due to a form of ?displacement clairvoyance? was shown to be very unlikely. It was concluded that it is possible to obtain what at least some people consider to be very remarkable correspondences between mentation and film content by chance alone.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The article has the purpose of making readily available for scrutiny primary sources relating to studies that give evidence of psi-phenomena. Although the list is not offered as providing compelling evidence or “proof” of psi, it is meant to provide a strong case for a recruitment of resources. The effects are not marginal or non-replicable ones although it is clear that in many cases they appear to be dependent on certain experimenters and participants.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Study 1 compared success rates of ‘live’ receivers and an RNG analogue. During a ‘standard’ autoganzfeld sending period, a ‘virtual’ receiver (an RNG) selected from among 768 statements that described all clips in a pool of 96 videos (8 for each clip). The 8 most frequently selected were given to an independent judge as a ‘virtual mentation’. The ‘live’ receiver correctly identified the target on 14 trials (35% hit rate; MCE = 25%), significantly better than chance (sum of ranks Z = 1.77, p = .038). Virtual mentations gave an encouraging 13 hits (32.5%; SOR Z = 1.48, p = .069). Study 2 compared sender and no-sender trials. Receivers scored at chance, slightly better in sender trials than no sender trials (26.1% versus 23.5%). Two independent judges using the virtual mentation produced hit rates of 30.6% and 16.7%; both gave non-significantly higher hit rates for the sender trials than for the no sender trials (42.1% versus 17.6%; 26.3% versus 5.9%), indicative of a sender effect. Study 3 manipulated target lability, comparing a true RNG, the PC’s pseudorandom function
and a pre-generated set of random numbers. We did not recruit ‘live’ receivers, but accurately briefed participants about the study and gave immediate feedback. Significant psi hitting was not obtained in any single condition, but there was a predicted interaction effect between target and sender lability, (F4, 74 = 4.959, p = .001); ‘stable’ senders gave highest psi hitting with the most labile target system, while labile senders showed the reverse. This effect was replicated in Study 4 (F4,74 = 2.747, p = .034), which also found a trend supporting a predicted interaction between feedback and sending strategy (F = (1,36) = 3.061, p = .053).

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
In recent work to evaluate the sender's role in successful ganzfeld GESP experiments, we have used a random number generator (RNG) as a ?virtual receiver? in a ganzfeld-like experiment. During the sending period, statements are ?selected? from a pool of items to give an ?ENG mentation? to be used by an independent judge. After early success in demonstrating the basic effect, later work has explored the effects of the lability of the target selection method (random number table, pseudorandom process, and live RNG) and of the participant (high, intermediate, or low, based on a composite measure) and found a predicted interaction effect between these factors. The present study was designed to confirm that finding and extend it by exploring a putative interaction effect between sending strategy (active/willing versus passive/absorbed) and feedback type (delayed versus immediate). Forty participants generated virtual readings consisting of 24 statements, 8 from each of the 3 selection methods. A significant interaction was found between target lability and sender lability, replicating our earlier effect. Although the interaction effect between sending strategy and feedback type was nonsignificant, a predicted significant effect of feedback for participants in the willing strategy condition was found.
