An attempt to improve ESP Scores using the real time digital ganzfeld technique
Publication year: 2003
Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
The aim of real-time recordings is to use the qualitative correspondences between ganzfeld experiences and the content of film clips in order to make better quantitative judgements. The study used this system of book-marking correspondences in order to see if ESP performance in the ganzfeld could be improved amongst a group of 8 volunteers who were scheduled to each complete six double ganzfeld sessions. Another hypothesis concerned the possibility that impressions which were thought by the participant to have an "external origin", would be more target related. Because of a computer crash the study had to be terminated with 74 ganzfeld trials. Although no improvement in performance could be demonstrated, and no differences were found with respect to the source to which imagery was attributed or to state of consciousness variables, participants scored at the expected rate of 32-33% for the Ganzfeld (effect size d = 0.17, z = 1.48, p = .09). The 38 trials that had one session per day gave a direct hit frequency of 45% while those 36 trails with two sessions per day obtained a 19% hit frequency (p < .05) which replicated earlier findings related to the hypothesised negative effect of more than one session per day on scoring.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
This study tested a proposed model wherein a receiver in ganzfeld protocol would show a mentation-reinforcing skin-conductance change when a sender decided their mentation was target-relevant. This would be seen whether the mentation heard by the sender was True-Feedback (TF) or False-Feedback (FF) i.e. the sender's decision initiated the skin-conductance change.
Based on the receiver's ranking of target video clip, there was no evidence of telepathy with only 24 direct hits (πo = 0.49, p=0.33). However, the receiver did show a skin-conductance response when the sender thought the mentation was relevant to the target. The apparent discrepancy highlights the low correlation (rho=-0.11) between the target-relevance of the receiver's mentation and the final rank given to the target, implying that there are limitations to the standard ganzfeld protocol for producing reliable telepathy effects.
Correlations were found between variance of the local magnetic field and telepathy success (Overall: Spearman r=+0.122, p=0.12; FF: r=+0.194, p=0.09; TF: r=-0.239, p=0.05). This was in the predicted direction overall and for the FF, but reversed for TF, possibly implying that different primary processes operate in each condition (negative correlations are more usually observed in micro-PK studies). A predicted positive correlation with magnetic field intensity was also found (Overall: r=-0.255, p=0.08; FF: r=-0.300, p=0.02; TF: r=-0.209, p=0.08). 42 of the receivers were also measured to see their skin-conductance responses to an applied magnetic field.
Although overall they showed the expected slight increase in the variance of skin conductance, there were no significant correlations between this and telepathy success.

Can we differentiate between ESP and Imagination?
Publication year: 2002

http://www.spr.ac.uk/psedsite/JSPRabstracts.php3?year=2002
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
One enduring problem in extrasensory perception (ESP) research lies in determining which aspects of a percipient's mentation might relate to the target, and which are not relevant. Perhaps this is a false dichotomy and ESP is instead "imagination that relates to the target", an extension of a continuous process wherein our internal state is perturbed by a multitude of external forces but one where we have been able to extract useful information from those perturbations. These perturbations will not be strong else they would be directly perceived, but instead enter into conscious awareness as subtle alterations to 'normal' thought processes. This may manifest as a sense of unease or awareness of difference, or, as occurs with weak or indirect sensory information, in a symbolic form. ESP can then be envisioned not as a single "sense" but instead as a symbolic unification of a stream of weak and indirect information from a variety of sources.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
One major criticism of parapsychology is that it lacks accepted theoretical models, and that those it does have tend to make use of the more esoteric and speculative areas of physics. Part of the reason for the widespread scepticism and dearth of viable theories is, I think, due to the perceived properties of psi effects rather than properties that are necessarily real. Given our current knowledge, it is difficult if not impossible to model psi effects as the claimed properties rarely appear to be consistent with theory and observation in other areas of science. But are the claims often made for psi phenomena really justified? Here, I look at three of the more common claims made by parapsychologists and critically assess the assumptions that led to them. I will try to show how the different assumptions we make about psi effects can radically alter the physical requirements of any potential mechanisms and suggest alternative perspectives on some parapsychological phenomena.

A pilot investigation into sensory noise, schizotypy, and extrasensory perception
Publication year: 2002
URL:
http://archived.parapsych.org/pa_convention_abstracts_2002.html#17
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This paper reports the findings of a pilot study in which a novel experimental protocol employing a combination of visual and auditory noise was used. The exploratory nature of the investigation also allowed for two other issues to be considered, these being the relationship between schizotypal personality and ESP performance, and a comparison of methods of rating during the judging period (similarity between mentation and the target, confidence of target identity and experimenter rating of target identity).
For both types of participant judging, there was no psi hitting effect. For similarity, the hit rate was 10% compared to the 25% that would be expected by chance. A sum of ranks analysis revealed a significant psi missing effect: z =2.4, p < .016 (2-tailed). For confidence, the hit rate was 20% and a sum of ranks analysis revealed a trend toward a psi missing effect, z = 1.8, p = .072 (2-tailed). For experimenter rating, the hit rate was 35%; the sum of ranks analysis resulted in a value of z = -1.0, p= .317 (2-tailed). By performing correlations between the amount that people liked the clips and the similarity and confidence ratings awarded to the target, it was found to be the case that people did not select targets based on their subjective liking of that clip (for similarity, r= -0.06 p > .8, for confidence, r = 0.135 p >.6). With regard to personality, correlations were examined between 2 of the rating measures (confidence and similarity) and the following personality variables: Unusual experiences, Cognitive disorganisation, Introvertive anhedonia, Impulsive nonconformity, and Temporal lobe lability. Of these, one significant correlation was demonstrated, this being between impulsive nonconformity and ESP (confidence), r = -0.59, (p<.01). The implications of the findings are discussed, particularly in relation to state/trait preference for psi performance and Palmer’s (e.g. 1997) magnitude-direction theory.
In terms of the use of the visual noise paradigm, the authors maintain that despite the psi-missing observed from the present implementation, it is a technique that merits further attention. From the study, both authors are under the impression that the mentation provided by receivers is similar, and possibly indistinguishable, in nature from ganzfeld mentation and therefore that this approach may be of use in the investigation of ESP. Also, casual observations in relation to the protocol, such as the need for a relaxation period to help in the transition between ‘every-day alertness’ and an ‘ESP mentality’ have provided pointers that may assist in the development of a protocol that is psi-conducive rather than one that results in psi-missing.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The study reported here is a replication of a previous postal study examining the possibility of true precognition. The previous study (Steinkamp, 2000) revealed chance results for true precognition but significant results for the clairvoyance condition. However, a similar study in the laboratory (Steinkamp, 2001) yielded almost significant results for true precognition. The replication study reported here tried to emulate the conditions in the laboratory but in the setting of a postal study. For instance, this time participants were given a relaxation tape to help them get in the right frame of mind for the experiment and they were not sent their target pool until after they had submitted their mentation reports. Results from the study were at chance. There was no obvious indication that participants' putative lack of motivation might have influenced the outcome. Also, participants who reported having had psychic experiences did not perform any better than those claiming no such experience. It appears that either postal experiments are not suitable for eliciting evidence for true precognition, or, if true precognition is possible, it can occur only with a much shorter precognitive interval than these experiments have allowed.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
This project consisted of four studies that systematically explored performance at ESP and PK tasks using a common protocol.
Study 1 compared personality covariates of performance for ESP and PK tasks. The overall outcome was disappointing, with sums of ranks for finishing positions a little worse than mean chance expectation (MCE). However, there were a number of interesting internal effects that were consistent with previous findings and merited further exploration.
Study 2 considered the effects of expectancy by comparing performance in an informed condition with that in a blind condition. The overall outcome was similar to that for Study 1. However, we did find that participants performed significantly better in the blind condition, suggesting that poor performance was not due to a disenchantment effect brought about by the use of deception.
Study 3 considered the effects of arousal level upon performance by instructing participants to adopt a relaxed/passive or aroused/active strategy, and by playing rousing or calming classical music. No effects of arousal were found, though general performance was somewhat better than previously.
Study 4 focused on possible experimenter effects. RD, who had conducted all previous sessions was experimenter for 20 trials, but CR conducted the other 20 trials. It was hypothesised that CR’s participants might fare better since he is a more experienced researcher and as its main designer and fundraiser has a greater ‘ownership’ of this project. We also included a questionnaire that asked about aspects of the experimenter-participant interaction. There was a further improvement in the overall outcome, and CR’s participants did fare better than RD’s, suggestively so overall and significantly so for disguised ESP trials. A number of the interaction items correlated remarkably strongly with task performance. Further work is planned.

Experimenter effects in laboratory tests of ESP and PK using a common protocol
Publication year: 2006

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This paper describes the fourth in a series of studies that explore the relationship between ESP and PK performance by testing for both using a common protocol so as to control for expectancy effects and experimental artifacts. Following earlier work we were particularly concerned to look for evidence of experimenter effects. Forty participants completed a computerbased greyhound racing game. Races occurred in two blocks of 12, with one block presented as an ESP task and the other as a PK task, though in fact each block included equal numbers of ESP and PK trials presented in random order. Roe and Davey each served as experimenter for 20 sessions and, after briefing each participant, would rate the interaction for warmth, spontaneity and positivity. Performance was non-significantly better than chance overall, but was
significantly so for disguised ESP trials (p = 0.01 1). As predicted, participants who had been briefed by Roe performed better overall than those briefed by Davey; suggestively so overall (p = 0.085) and significantly so for disguised ESP (p = 0.002). Some interaction measures gave promising correlations with task performance, particularly the experimenter's confidence of success (rs = -.43 1, p = 0.007).

Are ESP and PK aspects of a unitary phenomenon? The effects of deception when testing the relationship between ESP and PK
Publication year: 2005
Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
This paper describes a second study designed to explore the relationship between ESP and PK performance by testing for both using a common protocol so as to control for expectancy effects and experimental artifacts. Following earlier work (Roe, Davey & Stevens, 2003), we were particularly concerned to gauge the effect upon performance of the mild deception inherent in the study design. Forty participants completed a computer-based greyhound racing game. Races occurred in two blocks of 12. One block was presented as an ESP task and required participants to nominate which of the six greyhounds had won a race that the computer had already run silently. The program then replayed the race as feedback. The other block was presented as a PK task and required participants to ‘will’ a greyhound that was selected for them to run faster than its competitors. The greyhound’s movements were determined in real time by an RNG. However, within each block half the races were in fact ESP trials and half PK trials, presented in random order. Participants were randomly allocated to one of two conditions; in the uninformed condition participants were not aware that some trials would be disguised in this way, but those in the informed condition were accurately briefed. Performance was non-significantly below chance for both ESP and PK trials, and for both true and disguised trials. There were no significant relationships between performance in the four conditions, although the effect sizes were of a similar magnitude and direction to those found previously. Participants who had been accurately briefed performed significantly worse than did those who were subject to mild deception (Z = –2.53, p = 0.01). Only one of the individual differences measures was able to significantly predict task performance, and this seems likely to have arisen as a result of multiple analyses. Reasons for participants’ poor performance at the task are proposed, some of which will be considered in future research.

Abstract/Results: This paper describes the third study of a series of four designed to explore the relationship between ESP and PK performance by testing for both using a common protocol so as to control for expectancy effects and experimental artifacts. Following earlier work (Roe, Davey & Stevens, 2003, in press), we were particularly interested to gauge the effect upon performance of participant arousal levels in view of contrasting prior research looking at ESP and PK separately. Participants were randomly allocated to one of two conditions; in the increased arousal condition participants were instructed to actively engage with the task and listened to selected pieces of up-beat classical music, while in the decreased arousal condition, participants were told to relax and take a passive approach to the task while listening to a peaceful relaxation tape. Overall performance was non-significantly above chance for both ESP and PK trials and there were no significant relationships between outcomes in the four conditions.

Title: BIAL Grants
Start date: 1994
History:
In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This study was designed to explore the relationship between ESP and PK performance by testing for both using a common protocol to control for expectancy effects and experimental artifacts. Forty participants completed a computer-based greyhound racing game. Races occurred in 2 blocks of 12, with one block presented as an ESP task and the other as a PK task. Within each block, half of the races were ESP trials and half PK trials, presented in random order. Overall performance was at chance levels for both ESP and PK trials, for true and disguised trials. There were no significant relationships between performance in the 4 conditions. Although paranormal belief did not predict task success, some other individual differences measures, notably state and trail anxiety, showed some promise. The effects of the mild deception used in this study on participants' performance was considered. Work on this topic is under way to explore more directly the effects of deception.
