Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Children’s development level and temperament: Most children presented cognitive, language and motor development level below the 50th percentile; over 58% of the children were perceived by the caregivers as displaying difficult temperament.
Attachment, temperament, length of institutionalization, and exposure to risk factors: 31% of the children were classified as disorganized; over 45% displayed indiscriminate attachment behavior, which was positively correlated to the caregivers’ perception of this kind of disturbed attachment and to the exposure to risk factors, and negatively correlated to the length of institutionalization.
Quality of the caregivers’ narratives and children’s temperament, development level, and attachment quality: Caregivers had difficulties in producing narratives in the different tasks, particularly in the caregiving interaction (41.4% of the caregivers failed to even producing a narrative). Narrative quality was positively correlated to children’s language development and negatively correlated to motor development. Attachment security was correlated to the presence of autobiographical narrative, but no correlation was found with the narratives’ quality.
Children’s cardiac activity during the Strange Situation Procedure (SSP) and during caregivers’ narrative tasks: Children’s heart rate (HR) was higher during the SSP episodes of higher emotional stress. In comparison to the SSP, lower levels of HR were observed during the narrative tasks. Insecure and disorganized children displayed lower HR than secure children during several SSP episodes. No relations were found between caregivers’ narrative quality and children’s HR during the SSP and the narrative interaction tasks.

This exploratory study examined mental development and the quality of socio-emotional functioning of 16 institutionalized children, aged from 3 to 6 years old, relating them with the quality of their caregivers’ attachment narratives. Griffiths Developmental Scales, Child Behavior Checklist, Attachment Script Representation and Attachment Q-Sort were used in the psychological assessment. Results showed that chidren’s developmental level was placed below normative data. Furthermore, data regarding externalizing and internalizing psychopathology symptoms were close to the clinical population. Nevertheless, and in contrast to our hypothesis, most children presented almost mormative attachments scores (secure base), but this was not related to the quality of attachement narratives presented by their caregivers. The implications of these findings are discussed in light of the impact of institutional deprivation in child development.

Attachment representations are thought to provide a cognitive-affective template, guiding the way individuals interact with unfamiliar social partners. To examine the neural correlates of this process, we sampled event-related potentials (ERPs) during exclusion by unfamiliar peers to differentiate insecure-dismissing from securely attached youth, as indexed by the child attachment interview. Thirteen secure and 10 dismissing 11- to 15-year-olds were ostensibly connected with two peers via the Internet to play a computerized ball-toss game. Actually, peers were computer generated, first distributing the ball evenly, but eventually excluding participants. Afterward children rated their distress. As in previous studies, distress was related to a negative left frontal slow wave (500-900 ms) during rejection, a waveform implicated in negative appraisals and less approach motivation. Though attachment classifications were comparable in frontal ERPs and distress, an attachment-related dismissal dimension predicted a negative left frontal slow wave during rejection, suggesting that high dismissal potentially involves elevated anticipation of rejection. As expected, dismissal and self-reported distress were uncorrelated. Yet, a new approach to quantifying the dissociation between self-reports and rejection-related ERPs revealed that dismissal predicted underreporting of distress relative to ERPs. Our findings imply that evaluations and regulatory strategies linked to attachment generalize to distressing social contexts in early adolescence.

OBJECTIVES:
To develop a new version of BioBeAMS, a multimedia system allowing the collection and analysis of children’s cardiac activity, and to examine, in a group of institutionally-reared children, the relations among child’s attachment disordered behaviors, caregiver’s narrative competence, and child’s cardiac activity during interaction tasks with the institutional caregiver.

40 institutionalized children (19 females) aged 9 to 30 months (Mean = 19.9; SD=6.66) and their caregivers were recruited in 12 institutions (Mean age at the time of admission = 8.35, SD=7.77; Mean length of time spent by the children at the institution = 11.53, SD=4.58).
Measures
Disturbances of Attachment Interview (Smyke & Zeanah, 1999); Rating of Infant and Stranger Engagement (Atlas-Corbett, Riley & Lyons-Ruth, 2005); Strange Situation Procedure (SSP; Ainsworth et al., 1978); Bio-Behavior Attachment Multimedia System - BioBeAMS 2.0 (Soares, Dias, Rangel, Martins, & Cunha, 2008); Caregivers’ narrative competence (Gonçalves et al., 2001); Infant Characteristics Questionnaire (Bates,
Freeland, & Lounsbury, 1979); Bayley Scales of Infant Development III (Bayley, 2006).
Procedures
Children were connected to 3 electrodes attached to the wireless signal acquisition box placed on a backpack. Episode 2 of the SSP was defined as the baseline for the cardiac activity. Next, two routine interaction tasks (1. caregiver telling a story using a picture book, and 2. feeding the child while telling a story) were carried out.
RESULTS:
A negative association between caregivers’ narrative complexity and children’s language was found, suggesting a higher stimulation from the caregivers when verbally interacting with these children in a structured task. Furthermore, children with less difficult temperament seem to have caregivers who tell more structured narratives. Indiscriminate behavior was correlated to cardiac activity during the routine tasks and the SSP; a decreased heart rate was found during interaction with stranger and a decreased LF/HF ratio was found when caregiver leaves.
DISCUSSION:
BioBeAMS 2.0 is a valuable resource for studying cardiac activity in interaction tasks with young children. Results suggest that caregivers’ narrative competence is relevant to the quality of interaction with institutionalized children. Finally, indiscriminate behavior seems to be related to cardiac activity during interactions with the caregiver, in particular during separation situations.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Research has argued that attachment styles, relatively stable throughout life, seem to influence how individuals respond to stress in adulthood. The cognitive schemata of insecure attachment, associated with negative emotions, often seem to relate to physical or mental illness, showing that psychobiological self-regulation mechanisms constitute factors of vulnerability to stressors. Several studies support the hypothesis that the development of less effective emotion regulation strategies are related to patterns of increased physiological reactivity and negative coping strategies, which may hinder adaptation in situations of illness and even promoting their progression. This research, based on a model of of self-regulation systems developed in interaction with early experiences, wants to characterize vulnerability to stress and adjustment to physical illness as a function of attachment style and explore the interactions between psychophysiological, emotional and behavioral dimensions, comparing women with breast cancer (N = 30) with healthy women (N = 31) and thus contribute to a tentative model of psychosomatic vulnerability. The results suggest insecure attachment patterns are related to less effective emotion regulation strategies and increased physiological reactivity and to negative adjustment outcomes.

Compared with their peers, adopted children face, more often, adversity and risk in early life, namely in terms of complications at birth, loss of the biological family and the admission in institutional settings characterized by less responsive care. Over the past few years, clinicians and researchers have warned about the negative effects of those experiences in child development. Simultaneously, the literature has been reinforcing the occurrence of positive changes after adoption in several areas of development. This paper review presents a summary of the main empirical findings about the effects of adoption, especially international, in child?s physical growth, cognitive, socio-emotional development and behavioral problems in adopted children.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Attachment has been one of the most recurrent research topics with institutional reared children. In these settings the children are often generally deprived of regular and individualized interactions with a limited and consistent number of caregivers. In general, the present empirical data support the main tenets of the attachment theory, i.e. the quality of institutional care can pose serious risk for children’s attachment development and, in extreme situations, may even impede the child of developing a selective and organized attachment relationship. However, in Portugal, there still is lack of research to examine the quality of care provided by the institutional settings and the developmental implications of this rearing experience, namely the attachment quality of small children. Thus, the main goal of the present study was to describe the frequency of attachment disorganization and disordered behaviors in a group of Portuguese institutionalized children and to examine whether these individual differences in attachment outcomes were associated with differences in children´s experience of early family risk and quality of institutional caregiving. Using developmental psychopathology as a framework, the current study has used a multi-method and multi-level approach to analyze the attachment outcomes of 85 children, aged between 12 and 30 months, living in institutional settings in the north of Portugal. Overall, results were consistent with the theoretical assumptions of the attachment theory and with the empirical data from institutional reared children. The present findings revealed concerning frequencies of disorganization and disordered attachment behaviors in this group of children. Furthermore, most of these atypical/disordered forms of attachment seem to be associated with individual differences in the quality of institutional relational care experienced by the children. Family risk experiences contributed for children’s attachment disorganization while individual psychological functioning accounted for children’s attachment disorders, inhibited and indiscriminate sub-type. Children’s age emerged as the variable more closely associated with secure base distortions behaviors.
