To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
A preliminary independent replication was conducted using a magnetic field stimulation technique claimed to evoke “excess correlations” in the dynamic behavior of any two objects exposed to the same fields. The objects in this experiment were beakers of water separated by distances of one, six, or ten meters. Acetic acid was added to water in a “local” beaker while pH was simultaneously measured in a “remote” beaker in which nothing was added. Control tests involved either not adding acid to the local beaker in some runs, or by using a third beaker that was not exposed to the magnetic field. The prediction was that the remote beaker’s pH would shift toward alkaline during a specific phase of the magnetic field stimulation, as compared to the same measure in control conditions. Based on a linear mixed-effects analysis and a bias-corrected and accelerated nonparametric bootstrap procedure applied to 50 experimental and control runs a statistically significant (p < 0.0005) but small magnitude pH shift (+0.004) toward alkalinity was observed in the remote beaker during the predicted stimulation phase, supporting previously published claims.

ABSTRACT:
Background
Research on mind-to-mind (telepathy) phenomena has been limited by difficulties in identifying participants who demonstrate telepathy under controlled conditions and by the limited replication of claims of a technology to enhance brain-to-brain correlations.
Aims
1. To develop a multi-phase screening pipeline to identify emotionally bonded pairs who show above-chance performance in a controlled telepathy task.
2. To replicate prior work reporting an “excess-correlation” magnetic stimulation effect claimed to induce brain-to-brain correlations.
Methods
Aim 1 included four phases: (1) screening candidate pairs; (2) collecting progressively detailed questionnaires; (3) testing 136 promising pairs; and (4) administering a remote intention-discrimination task to 100 pairs, with one member acting as sender and the other as receiver across 10 randomized trials per block.
Aim 2 replicated a technique purported to enhance brain-to-brain correlations using pH changes in water as a proxy for variations in brain activity.
Results
In Aim 1 across 200 paired tests, 90 of the 100 receivers exceeded chance performance (two-tailed p = .049). Performance distributions did not vary with physical distance between participants. In Aim 2, a preregistered protocol successfully replicated the excess-correlation effect.
Conclusions
The Mind2Mind project achieved its aims at finding potentially talented participants. These studies establish a platform for follow-up investigations, including EEG hyperscanning and other neuroimaging tests, as well as investigation of magnetic stimulation techniques that may enhance neural correlates of telepathy.
