The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Studies on temporal perception lack a validated method and a consensual “gold-standard” to measure time perception. Evidence suggests deterioration of timing with aging. This study aimed to develop and validate a neuropsychological tool to measure time perception and to study temporal perception along aging.
Eighty-six healthy subjects, aged 15-90 years-old, were prospectively asked to verbally estimate and produce empty intervals signaled by auditory beeps, of 7, 32 and 58 seconds duration. Two tests were used as “gold standards”: estimating the duration to draw a clock (“clock time”) and estimation of the duration of neuropsychological evaluation (“global time”). Results showed a correlation between estimation and production (p<. 01), and a correlation between estimation or production and “global time” (p<. 01). A correlation between either estimation or production and age (p<. 01), indicating faster internal clocks with aging. Comparison between three age groups (15-40 yrs-old; 41-64 yrs-old; 65-90 yrs-old), showed a trend toward overestimation and underproduction with older age, reaching significance between the extreme age groups (p< .05).
The proposed test seems a good tool to measure subjective duration and the results showed an acceleration of internal clock with aging.

This study aimed to develop and validate a neuropsychological tool to measure time perception and to study temporal perception with aging. Eighty-six healthy participants, aged 15–90 years old, were asked to verbally estimate and produce empty intervals signaled by auditory beeps, of 7-, 32-, and 58-s duration. Two tests were used as “gold-standards”: estimation of the duration of time necessary to draw a clock (“clock time”) and estimation of the duration of neuropsychological evaluation (“global time”). Results showed a correlation between estimation and production (p < .01) and a correlation between estimation or production and “global time” (p < .01). The correlation between either estimation or production and age (p < .01), suggested a faster “internal-clock” in the older participants. However, this finding lost significance when controlled for literacy. The results suggest that these tests are potentially a useful tool to measure subjective perception of time. They also corroborate the hypothesis of a change in subjective time perception with aging. It was not possible to conclude if this effect was a specific result of aging or biased by the interference of literacy.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Studies concerning time perception lack a validated assessment tool and a consensual “gold-standard” measure. Moreover, the present evidence suggests modification of timing with aging. This study aimed to develop and validate a neuropsychological tool to measure time perception and to study temporal perception with aging. Eighty-six healthy subjects, aged 15-90 years-old, were asked to verbally estimate and produce empty intervals signaled by auditory beeps, of 7, 32 and 58 seconds duration. Two tests were used as “gold-standards”: estimating the duration of time necessary to draw a clock (“clock time”) and estimation of the duration of neuropsychological evaluation (“global time”). Results showed a correlation between estimation and production (p<0.01) and a correlation between estimation or production and “global time” (p<0.01). The
correlation between either estimation or production and age (p<0.01), indicated a faster “internal-clock” with aging. A comparison between three age groups (15-40 yrs-old; 41-64 yrs-old; 65-90 yrs-old) showed a trend toward time overestimation and underproduction with older age, reaching significance between the extreme age groups (p< 0.05). The results suggest that these tests are potentially a useful tool to measure the subjective perception of time and corroborate the hypothesis of an acceleration of “internal-clock” with aging. In other study, ten patients with Parkinson`s disease and “wearing-off” and no dementia performed
the above tasks for time estimation and production; patients were evaluated in the “ON” and “OFF” stage. We found no difference between patients and controls. In a sub-group analysis, two different behaviors emerged: a subgroup of patients had a faster “internal-clock” during “ON” stage while other had a faster “internal-clock” off levodopa, but this difference did not reach statistical significance. Further studies are needed to investigate the role of dopamine in time perception.

Advanced meditators occasionally report experiences of timelessness, or states of awareness that seem to transcend the usual boundaries of the subjective present. This type of experience was investigated in eight experienced meditators and eight matched controls by measuring 32 channels of EEG before, during, and after exposure to unpredictable light and sound stimuli. The experiment postulated that if some aspect of consciousness extends beyond the present moment, then prestimulus electrocortical signals should differ depending on stimuli that were about to be selected by a truly random process, and that if such experiences were catalyzed through meditation practice, then prestimulus differences should be more apparent in meditators than in nonmeditators. Each of the 32 EEG channels was baseline adjusted on each trial by the electrical potential averaged between two- and one-second prestimulus, then for each channel the average potential was determined from one-second prestimulus to stimulus onset. The resulting means across subjects in each group were compared by stimulus type using randomized permutation procedures and corrected for multiple comparisons. Within the control group, no EEG channels showed significant prestimulus differences between light versus sound stimulus conditions, but within the meditator group five of 32 channels resulted in significant differences (P < .05, two tailed). Comparisons between control and meditator groups showed significant prestimulus differences prior to audio tone stimuli in 14 of 32 channels (P < .05, two tailed, of which eight channels were P < .005, two tailed). This outcome successfully replicates effects reported in earlier experiments, suggesting that sometimes the subjective sense of awareness extending into the future may be ontologically accurate.

Advanced meditators occasionally report experiences of timelessness, or states of awareness that seem to transcend the usual boundaries of the subjective present. This type of experience was investigated in eight experienced meditators and eight matched controls by measuring 32 channels of EEG before, during, and after exposure to unpredictable light and sound stimuli. The experiment postulated that if some aspect of consciousness extends beyond the present moment, then prestimulus electrocortical signals should differ depending on stimuli that were about to be selected by a truly random process, and that if such experiences were catalyzed through meditation practice, then prestimulus differences should be more apparent in meditators than in nonmeditators. Each of the 32 EEG channels was baseline adjusted on each trial by the electrical potential averaged between two- and one-second prestimulus, then for each channel the average potential was determined from one-second prestimulus to stimulus onset. The resulting means across subjects in each group were compared by stimulus type using randomized permutation procedures and corrected for multiple comparisons. Within the control group, no EEG channels showed significant prestimulus differences between light versus sound stimulus conditions, but within the meditator group five of 32 channels resulted in significant differences (P < .05, two tailed). Comparisons between control and meditator groups showed significant prestimulus differences prior to audio tone stimuli in 14 of 32 channels (P < .05, two tailed, of which eight channels were P < .005, two tailed). This outcome successfully replicates effects reported in earlier experiments, suggesting that sometimes the subjective sense of awareness extending into the future may be ontologically accurate.

The acceleration of the internal clock promoted by arousal of emotional stimuli has been suggested as the mechanism underlying the effects of emotion in time perception (i.e., time overestimation) outweighing the attentional effects (i.e., loss of temporal information) of processing such stimuli. However there is no empirical demonstration that these are indeed the explanatory factors of the influence of emotion on time perception, and even if this is how these factors interfere in time judgments. In this project we developed a set of experiments to disentangle these factors. We used physiological measures, able to provide independent indexes without disrupting the time estimation task, and examine mediation effects of these emotional dimensions on time perception. Additionally, we contrast the effects of emotions with the effects of other non-emotional feelings, familiarity and perceptual fluency in order to circumscribe the underlying processes. Our studies generally suggest that duration judgments were affected by emotional arousal, though this effect seems to be moderated by emotion type, valence, response delay, and arousal manipulation.
Nevertheless psychophysiological mediation analysis reveals a more complex process of time processing of emotion stimuli than predicted by ‘internal clock’ models. In addition, our studies imply that the feeling of stimulus familiarity and fluency is associated with a time overestimation. This effect is moderated by attention, also in an unpredicted way. Our results suggest surprisingly similar mechanisms on how the perceptual fluency, familiarity, and emotions influence the perception of time, and that somehow refutes the prevailing explanations in the literature. Together these results indicate a conjugation between the perception of temporal units and procedural changes of the stimuli, i.e., that temporal and nontemporal information are combined in the temporal estimates of emotional stimuli.

The emotional nature of a facial expression seems to distort perception of its duration. In this paper we present a study that tests the hypothesis of this effect be moderated by the emotional dimensions (valence and arousal) by addressing its explanation in terms of processes that interfere with the functioning of an "internal clock", including activation and attentional processes. Using a temporal bisection task with durations of between 400 and 1600 ms, the results suggest a valence effect: the duration of the negative faces is overestimated in relation to positive faces. This effect was moderated by the intensity of emotional expressions (arousal), been clearly observed only in the low arousal condition. In high arousal condition positive and negative faces were identically estimated. The fact that this interaction is found only in short time windows, suggests to us, a concurrent interference in activation and attentional processes. This explanation is discussed in the article, taking into account their limitations.

The presence of an emotion in a human face increases its perceived duration (Droit-Volet et al., 2004). Our study extends this effect to a new set of emotions (happiness, fear, anger) and test the impact that familiarity may exert on it. Participants estimated the duration (between 400-1600 ms) of neutral and emotional faces by comparing them to the extreme durations (short and long) previously learned. The analysis of bisection-points and psychophysical-functions suggest a replication of general overestimation of emotional faces. As expected, familiarity moderates this effect, not because it influences emotional estimations, but because it bias estimations of neutral-faces durations.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Três experimentos testam a hipótese da duração de estímulos familiares (exposição prévia) ser sobrestimada, no campo da percepção de faces humanas. A hipótese de sobrestimação foi abordada com uma tarefa de bissecção-temporal e com diferentes manipulações de familiaridade (subliminar, supraliminar: repetição prévia ou associada à tarefa). A análise dos dados revela sistematicamente um enviesamento das funções psicofísicas com base na familiaridade: respostas mais longas são dadas a estímulos mais familiares. Esta sobrestimação não é homogénea ao longo da linha temporal, dissipando-se nos intervalos mais longos. Discutem-se 3 possíveis explicações para estes dados: 1) atribuição da fluência de processamento à duração do estímulo, 2) aumento da capacidade para processar atributos temporais do estímulo (modelos da atenção) e 3) aumento do arousal.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
