Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The vestibular system has widespread interactions with other sensory modalities. Here we investigate whether vestibular stimulation modulates somatosensory function, by assessing the ability to detect faint tactile stimuli to the fingertips of the left and right hand with or without galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS). We found that left anodal and right cathodal GVS, significantly enhanced sensitivity to mild shocks on either hand, without affecting response bias. There was no such effect with either right anodal and left cathodal GVS or sham stimulation. Further, the enhancement of somatosensory sensitivity following GVS does not strongly depend on the duration of GVS, or the interval between GVS and tactile stimulation. Vestibular inputs reach the somatosensory cortex, increasing the sensitivity of perceptual circuitry.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The human brain recruits similar brain regions when a state is experienced (e.g., touch, pain, actions) and when that state is passively observed in other individuals. In adults, seeing other people being touched activates similar brain areas as when we experience touch ourselves. Here we show that already by four months of age, cortical responses to tactile stimulation are modulated by visual information specifying another person being touched. We recorded somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) in 4-month-old infants while they were presented with brief vibrotactile stimuli to the hands. At the same time that the tactile stimuli were presented the infants observed another person’s hand being touched by a soft paintbrush or approached by the paintbrush which then touched the surface next to their hand. A prominent positive peak in SEPs contralateral to the site of tactile stimulation around 130 ms after the tactile stimulus onset was of a significantly larger amplitude for the “Surface” trials than for the “Hand” trials. These findings indicate that, even at four months of age, somatosensory cortex is not only involved in the personal experience of touch but can also be vicariously recruited by seeing other people being touched.

ABSTRACT:
Background
Autosuggestion, a form of self-suggestion, follows the idea that the inner repetition of a thought can influence perception. Although widely integrated into modern life, the empirical evidence on whether autosuggestion can alter one’s own perception is scarce.
Aims
This research investigates the modulatory effects of autosuggestion on perception, emotion and body representation, across six studies, using psychophysics and electrophysiological recordings.
Method
In Study 1, we designed an implicit experimental measure to assess the effects of reiterating the thought that a touch felt strong or weak, while minimizing response biases. Studies 2 and 3 examined the effects of autosuggestion and placebo. Studies 4 and 5 focused on the generalization of the autosuggestive phenomena to tactile localization and emotion attribution. Finally, Study 6 focused on the impact of haptic experiences with extreme body types on subsequent body perception.
Results
Study 1 revealed significant modulation of tactile perception through autosuggestion. However, Study 2 did not yield similar effects, highlighting potential limitations and challenges in the experimental design. Study 3 showed similar electrophysiological responses in placebo and autosuggestion. Study 4 did not yield statistically significant differences. Study 5's findings showed that autosuggestion exerts an influence on emotion attribution of facial expression. Finally, Study 6, revealed adiposity aftereffects in the haptic modality.
Conclusions
This investigation contributes valuable insights into the potential factors influencing the efficacy of autosuggestion. The findings encourage further exploration of these phenomena and opens avenues for developing targeted interventions in patient care and rehabilitation.

Autosuggestion is a cognitive process where the inner repetition of a thought actively influences one's own perceptual state. In spite of its potential benefits for medical interventions, this technique has gained little scientific attention so far. Here, we took advantage of the known link between intensity and frequency perception in touch ('Békésy effect'). In three separate experiments, participants were asked to modulate the perceived intensity of vibrotactile stimuli at the fingertip through the inner reiteration of the thought that this perception feels very strong (Experiment 1, n = 19) or very weak (Experiments 2, n = 38, and 3, n = 20), while they were asked to report the perceived frequency. We show that the task to change the perceived intensity of a tactile stimulus via the inner reiteration of a thought modulates tactile frequency perception. This constitutes the first experimental demonstration that an experimental design that triggers autosuggestion alters participants' tactile perception using a response orthogonal to the suggested variable. We discuss whether this cognitive process could be used to influence the perception of pain in a clinical context.
