    • The Boolean operator AND between the terms is assumed by default. If you enter the words European Union in the search box, the system returns all records in which both words occur, regardless of their order.
    • When entering a set of words in quotes, e.g "european union", all records containing the literal term "European Union" will be retrieved.
  • Search by access fields (e.g. author, title, etc.):
    • To direct your search, choose the field in which you want to search the word or expression.
    • Search in the field assumes by default the expression in quotes, e.g. European union will retrieve all records containing the literal term "European Union"
  • To perform more complex searches, additional words or expressions may be added.
  • If you want to refine the search results, you can always access the link "search" in the upper left corner of the page of search results.
  • The search engine is not case sensitive. For example, the word congress has the same meaning that Congress or CONGRESS.
  • To truncate your search expression, use the $ character
  • You can filter the results of your search by a date or date range, filling the appropriate boxes.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
A multidimensional measure of schizotypal personality, the Personality Syndrome Questionnaire (PSQ) was completed by 83 undergraduate medical students. It was predicted that perceptual and cognitive reality distortions would be positively associated with hypnotic susceptibility. Fifteen of 84 items showed the predicted association. When combined into a preliminary scale, a correlation of 0.43 was found for the total scale score and susceptibility. Cronbach's alpha for this scale was acceptable at 0.77. These preliminary results are potentially vulnerable to type I error. Replication on a larger sample and factorial analysis of the proposed scales structure are required and underway. Relations between hypnotisability and psychopathology revisited
Publication year: 2004

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ch.304/abstract
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Inspired by a first episode of schizophrenia following within a week of stage hypnosis, we examined relations between schizotypy and hypnotizability with the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility (HGSHS), showing positive associations with 15 items mostly consisting of positive aspects of schizotypy. Here this was re-examined in two further samples. First, with the more cognitively loaded Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, Form C, administered individually to Italian, female psychology students. In the second the HGSHS was administered to British medical student volunteers in stress reduction studies. In the first replication 12 correlations were disclosed, all with positive features of schizotypy, nine consisting of unreality experiences, with six items relating to psychic experiences. In the second replication of the 13 positive associations, seven were negative items belonging to the withdrawn syndrome, with six belonging to the social anxiety subscale, a non-specific feature of schizotypy. Across the series of studies, all but one item was interpreted as consistent with associations between hypnotizability and positive schizotypy and social anxiety. Though the items mostly varied from study to study, and despite sampling and scale differences, the outcome clearly merits large scale studies to investigate further the relation between hypnotic susceptibility and psychopathology.

Cognitive disinhibition and psi: Exploring the filter theory of psi-awareness
Publication year: 2007
URL:
http://www.academia.edu/695144/Psi_and_cognitive_disinhibition_Exploring_the_filters_of_consciousness_hypothesis
Abstract/Results: INTRODUCTION
Filter theories of psi postulate that psi-mediated information operates as a ‘weak stimulus’ that is likelyto be filtered out of conscious awareness (e.g. Myers, 1903/2001; Thalbourne, Bartemucci, Delin, Fox, & Nofi, 1997), and that psi might more commonly function at a subliminal level, without representation inawareness (e.g. Roney-Dougal, 1986). This research brief presents the methodology of a study in which anexperimental paradigm, developed to examine the efficacy of hypothesised filtering mechanisms of consciousness, is adapted to include a psi component.Inhibitory processes are thought to play a role in selective attention, discarding behaviourally irrelevantinformation in order to reduce working memory load (Wuthrich & Bates, 2001). A stream of research hasfocused on ‘cognitive inhibition,’ through experimental paradigms such as latent inhibition (LI). LIassesses inhibitory processes in selective attention. In a typical LI experiment there are two conditions, where, during an initial task, participants are either: 1) repeatedly exposed to a particular stimulus (the pre-exposure [PE] condition); or 2) not exposed to this stimulus (the non-pre-exposure [NPE] condition). The stimulus is irrelevant to this initial task and serves no function. Thus, it is hypothesised that those inthe PE condition will inhibit its representation from awareness. In a subsequent task (the experimentaltask), this stimulus assumes relevant status; it must be attended to in order to solve a problem. Those in the NPE condition solve the problem faster; this is presumed to be because the stimulus has not been inhibited(e.g. Gray, Fernandez, Williams, Ruddle & Snowden, 2002).In the current study a standard visual LI protocol has been replicated, and two conditions added: 1) psi- pre-exposure (? PE), where a sender will attempt to transmit the stimulus telepathically during the initialtask; and 2) non-psi-pre-exposure (N ? PE). Thus, we assess whether psi-mediated information might beinhibited from awareness when it is not needed, thus affecting subsequent cognitive performance. There is some evidence to suggest that high schizotypy and creativity abolish the LI effect (Carson etal., 2003; Gray et al., 2002), from which it has been inferred that schizotypy and creativity have incommon less stringent filtering of mental elements into awareness. Creativity, schizotypy and belief in the paranormal are incorporated in the current study to address the idea that certain profiles will relate toincreased awareness of the (psi) stimulus.

Exploring the filter theory of psi-awareness: do we inhibit psi-mediated information when it is not needed?
Publication year: 2007

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Filter theories of psi postulate that psi-mediated information operates as a ‘weak stimulus’ that is likely to be filtered out of conscious awareness (e.g. Myers, 1903/2001; Thalbourne, Bartemucci, Delin, Fox, & Nofi, 1997), and that psi might more commonly function at a subliminal level, without representation in awareness (e.g. Roney-Dougal, 1986). As such, states of consciousness that reduce ‘cognitive noise’ (e.g. Honorton, 1977) and unstructured states with wide, diffuse attention (e.g. Braud, 2002) have been implicated in models of psi-awareness, augmenting faint impressions; as have characteristics associated with increased openness to weak stimuli, such as low perceptual-defence (Watt, 1994) and schizotypy (Simmonds, 2003). This paper presents the methodology of a study in which an experimental paradigm, developed to examine the efficacy of hypothesised filtering mechanisms of consciousness, is adapted to include a psi component.
Inhibitory processes are thought to play a role in selective attention (Milliken & Tipper, 1998), discarding behaviourally irrelevant information in order to reduce working memory load (Wuthrich & Bates, 2001). A stream of research has focused on ‘cognitive inhibition’, through experimental paradigms such as latent inhibition (LI). LI assesses inhibitory processes in selective attention. In a typical LI experiment there are two conditions, where, during a masking task, participants are either: 1) repeatedly exposed to a particular stimulus (the pre-exposure [PE] condition); or 2) not exposed to this stimulus (the non-pre-exposure [NPE] condition). The stimulus is irrelevant to this initial task and serves no function. Thus, it is hypothesised that those in the PE condition will inhibit its representation from awareness. In a subsequent task (the experimental task), this stimulus assumes relevant status; it must be attended to in order to solve a problem. Those in the NPE condition solve the problem faster; this is presumed to be because the stimulus has not been inhibited (e.g. Gray, Fernandez, Williams, Ruddle & Snowden, 2002).
The study that will be presented assesses whether psi-mediated information might be inhibited from awareness when it is not needed, thus affecting subsequent cognitive performance. A standard visual LI protocol has been replicated, and two conditions added: 1) psi-pre-exposure (?PE), where a sender will attempt to transmit the stimulus telepathically during the masking task; and 2) non-psi-pre-exposure (N?PE). Thus, we ask whether psi works in a similar manner to the unattended stimulus in the normal processes of attention.
There is some evidence to suggest that high schizotypy and creativity abolish the LI effect (Carson et al., 2003; Gray et al., 2002) – where pre-exposure to the stimulus (with irrelevant status) does not lead to impaired performance on the experimental task. It has thus been inferred that schizotypy and creativity have in common less stringent filtering of mental elements into awareness. Creativity and schizotypy are incorporated in the current study to address the idea that certain profiles will relate to increased awareness of the (psi) stimulus. Further, it is predicted that belief in and experience of ESP in daily life will be associated with increased awareness of the (psi) stimulus.
Study hypotheses
It is hypothesized that: 1) performance on the experimental task will be impaired in the PE condition compared to the NPE condition; 2) there will be a significant difference in performance on the experimental task between the ?PE and the N?PE conditions (direction is not predicted, as the effect of pre-exposure has been shown to be bi-directional in LI research where weak pre-exposure improves rather than impairs performance); creativity characterised by ‘intrapersonal awareness’ (Holt et al., 2004), the positive dimensions of schizotypy (Simmonds, 2003) and belief in the paranormal (Thalbourne & Delin, 1993) will: 3) correlate significantly and negatively with performance in the PE condition (i.e. with enhanced performance on the experimental task); and 4) correlate significantly with performance in the ?PE condition.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Contrary to expectations, schizotypy scores did not appear to influence memory accuracy or reaction time in either the location-based source task or the reality monitoring task. Differences were observed, however, in the event-related potential old/new effects as a function of schizotypy throughout the recording epoch (0-1900 ms post-stimulus). These differences were primarily evident when items had been presented in the auditory modality at study, and took the form of smaller old/new effects for the high schizotypes than for the low schizotypes. Early inspection of the ERP data also indicates that the scalp distributions of the old/new effects differ between the groups, suggesting that the neural generators of the old/new effects were at least partially non overlapping between the two groups. In addition, it was observed that the modulating effect of retrieval task-type upon the old/new effects also differed to some extent between the two groups. For example, low schizotypes showed larger old/new effects for the location-based source task than for the reality monitoring task between 800-1200 ms, whereas the reverse was true for the high schizotypes. In addition to these primary findings, our large data set also allowed us to observe other interactions of interest to the memory field in general; between 800-1900 ms, we observed that the modality of study items interacted with retrieval task type such that the old/new effects elicited during these epochs were modulated by study modality during the location-based source monitoring task but not during the reality monitoring task.

Indicadores de propensión a la esquizotipia entre individuos creyentes en lo paranormal: examinando la intensidad de la imaginería, esquizotipia y experiencias alucinatorias
Publication year: 2010

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Some studies suggest that a strong belief in the paranormal predisposes one to having a variety of paranormal experiences, or even to an equal or larger extent interpret anomalous perceptual experiences as such. Proneness to shizotypy is another factor that underlies the control and preservation of these beliefs. This study examined possible differences between ”hallucinators” and ”non-hallucinators”, from a sample of believers in the paranormal, in terms of the intensity of auditory, visual and tactile imagery, as well as three factors of proneness to schizotypy. A sample of 158 believers in the paranormal was examined, including 110 women (69.6%) and 48 men (30.4%), age range 19 to 75 years (m = 46.83, Sd = 11.92). A second sample included 158 psychology students, 69% women and 30% men (age m = 46.83), from the Open interamerican University. Both groups completed Betts’ Vivid imagery Scale, Barrett’s hallucinations questionnaire, and the Schizotypical Personality questionnaire. The results revealed greater intensity of visual, auditory and táctiles imagery by hallucinators as compared to non-hallucinators among believers in the paranormal, but no greater proneness to hallucinate. however, the visual, auditory and tactile hallucinators scored higher than non-hallucinators on the cognitive-perceptual factor, which also appeared as the best discriminator of visual, auditory and tactile hallucinatory modalities in the student sample. A possible conclusion is that believers in the paranormal are psychologically integrated individuals; nevertheless the term ”hallucination” should be abandoned.

Variables cognitivas y perceptuales en la experiencia del déjà vu
Publication year: 2009

http://www.feap.es/anuarios/2010/html/RevLA01xART0582.html
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:

Publication year: 2009

http://www.scielo.org.ar/pdf/spc/v13n2/v13n2a02.pdf
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
In an out-of-body experience (OBE), the “self”, or center of awareness, seems to temporarily occupy a position spatially remote from one’s body. In support of previous studies, undergraduate students reporting OBEs (N = 132) showed a higher level of cognitive-perceptual schizotypy, dissociation, visual and kinetic hallucination proneness, and visual imagery than did non-OBEs (N = 516). The results support a dissociation model of OBEs. Some persons reported beneficial adaptive effects from their OBEs. Despite the widespread occurrence of anomalous perceptual experiences, including OBEs, in the general population, the term hallucination still has pejorative overtones. Such findings suggest that OBEs may be related to dissociation and cognitive-perceptual schizotypy. When taken in conjunction with other surveys of the general population, this study confirms that psychic experiences are a common occurrence in non-clinical populations, and that, although they are correlated with dissociation, they are not necessarily associated with pathology.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Study 1 was conducted with the intention of identifying common facets of paranormal belief. A composite self-report measure containing items from several existing scales and newly constructed items (haunting/poltergeist activity and extraterrestrials) was produced. Principal component analysis was performed, and a nine factor structure emerged; measuring belief in: Hauntings, Other Life, Superstition, Religious Belief, Alien Visitation, Extrasensory Perception, Psychokinesis, Astrology, and Witchcraft. The analysis suggested that items measuring Alien Visitation and Hauntings should be included within paranormal belief measures.
Study 2 investigated the relationship between belief in extra-terrestrial life, UFOs and paranormal belief. The results revealed that UFO-related beliefs were more highly correlated with paranormal belief than belief in extra-terrestrial life. Partial correlation controlling for the overlap between the two extra-terrestrial related dimensions revealed a series of weak negative correlations between belief in extra-terrestrial life and paranormal belief, and moderate positive correlations between UFO-related beliefs and paranormal belief. These findings indicate that only the more extreme UFO-related beliefs were associated with general paranormal belief.
Study 3 investigated the relationship between cognitive-perceptual measures (schizotypy, transliminality and delusional ideation) and paranormal belief. All three constructs were found to be significantly positively correlated with paranormal belief. Comparisons between participants high and low (above vs. below the median) on each cognitive-perceptual measure revealed that participants above the median demonstrated higher levels of endorsement on each of the paranormal belief subscale measures. Partial correlation and a hierarchical regression, with the predictor variables entered in order of zero-order correlation, revealed the majority of variance within paranormal belief was explained by the cognitive-perceptual factor of schizotypy.
Study 4 employed the dot-probe detection technique to investigate whether participants high in paranormal belief demonstrate a selective attentional bias towards paranormal related words. Level of paranormal belief, schizotypy, delusional ideation and transliminality were not found to affect attentional deployment; no differences were observed between participants scoring high and low on each of the measures. The pattern of results was consistent across factors suggesting that paranormal related stimuli are no more prone to attentional capture than neutral control stimuli.

Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
The current study investigated the relationship between paranormal belief and cognitive-perceptual personality measures. Participants completed a questionnaire battery containing a paranormal belief measure, the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire (SPQ-B), and the Revised Transliminality Scale (RTS). Scores on the SPQ-B and RTS were found to be positively correlated with overall paranormal belief. Differences in level of paranormal belief for participants scoring high and low on each cognitive-perceptual measure were assessed. Participants above the median demonstrated higher levels of endorsement across all paranormal belief subscales (hauntings, aliens, superstition, other life, religion, PK, ESP, astrology, and witchcraft) than those scoring below the median. Partial correlation and hierarchical regression revealed the majority of the variance was explained by the cognitive-perceptual factor of the SPQ-B. In addition to this, within the regression model, the RTS was found to explain additional variance to that accounted for by the cognitive-perceptual factor of the SPQ-B.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
95 participants (believers and skeptics) took part in a study comprising a series of 4 visual noise and 4 auditory noise (pink noise) trials. Each participant was exposed to 2 degraded stimuli, 1 ESP stimulus and 1 random trial for each sense. Believers and skeptics did not differ in the number of guesses made regarding target identity. However, believers’ guesses were generally more elaborate and complex; their reaction times to decide that something was present (for the auditory condition) were faster, they were more confident about their first guesses and made more misidentifications than skeptics. Overall, more guesses and misidentifications were made for the visual condition.
Believers and skeptics did not differ in their overt detection of weak visual or auditory stimuli. Overall, reaction times were faster when a degraded stimulus was present compared to the random condition. For judge 1, there was a trend toward a significant ESP effect for the auditory condition (z= 1.93, p =.053) and a suggestive effect for the visual condition (z= 1.65, p =.099). For judge 2, there were no significant effects for either sense. For the auditory sense, more guesses were made for the psi than the random conditions. Believers did not differ significantly from skeptics in terms of ESP scoring.
By exploring schizotypy, this study also found evidence for different types of believer and disbeliever; a healthy and less healthy believer and an equivalent healthy and less healthy skeptic. There were no differences between the two different types of believer on ESP scoring.
Overall, the Magical Ideation scale did not correlate with ESP scoring. However among skeptics, there was a significant negative correlation with auditory ESP.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Subjective paranormal experiences are often experienced against a random backdrop; for example, reading the tea leaves to predict the future, scrying, and hearing “electronic voice phenomena” of purported discarnate spirits amid static noise. To date, the dominant framework for understanding paranormal cognition is that believers in the paranormal and those prone to experiencing paranormal/anomalous phenomena (in particular, those who score high on positive schizotypy) are biased toward the detection of signals or patterns in randomness where none are there. This is known as apothenia or the tendency to make a Type I error (c.f., Brugger, 2001), which results in seeing things that are not actually there (hallucinations), making connections between random events and a proneness to find meaning and significance in random events.
Prior research does indicate that believers and those who are prone to anomalous experiences are more likely to perceive meaningful visual and auditory stimuli amid random noise (where none are presented) (e.g., Feelgood & Rantzen, 1994; Young, Bentall, Slade & Dewey, 1987). In addition, research suggests that under perceptually ambiguous situations (where a stimulus is present but degraded), believers are more prone to rapid and over confident decisions about what is hidden amid noise which are less likely to be updated in the light of new information (e.g., Blackmore & Moore, 1994).
Research also indicates that those who score high on positive schizotypy (and related variables) may actually be particularly efficient at the perception of subliminal or weak stimuli (Crawley, French, & Yesson, 2002; Evans, 1997). However, little research has systematically explored individual differences in the perception of weak or degraded stimuli presented amid random noise.
Recent research in parapsychology has indicated that sensory noise may be conducive to performance at an extrasensory perception task. In addition, although findings are mixed, prior research suggests that positive schizotypy may relate to psi performance. Where schizotypy is considered multidimensionally and cluster analyzed, two profiles of positive schizotypy emerge; one which seems to be associated with good mental health, whilst the other is associated with poorer mental health. Interestingly, recent research (Holt & Simmonds-Moore, 2008) found that the healthy schizotypy cluster was the only group to perform significantly on an attention-based psi task.
This study aimed to explore several questions pertinent to the perception/detection of “weak stimuli” (including psi and degraded stimuli) which may or may not be hidden amid random visual and auditory noise. The project will extend the existing literature by exploring three possibilities for subjective paranormal experiences among believers in the paranormal/positive schizotypes: 1) Psi experiences are derived from a greater propensity to detect psi; 2) Psi experiences are derived from a greater predisposition to detect subliminal or weak stimuli; and 3) Psychic experiences are better explained by the human tendency to find meaning in randomness, apothenia or the Type I error (e.g., Brugger, 2001).
This project is informed by research from the hallucination literature (e.g., see Bentall, 1990), the paranormal belief literature (Blackmore & Moore, 1994, Rogers, & Prophet, 2008), the psychotherapy literature (e.g., the use of the Rorschach), the perception without awareness literature (e.g., see Merikle, Smilek & Eastwood, 2001), research on Electronic Voice Phenomena (e.g., see Barušs, 2001) and more recently, the psi literature (e.g., Simmonds & Fox, 2004).
Despite the proposal that the perceptual biases are understood to reflect a continuum (Brugger, 2001), there is currently little research which explores the psychology of the disbeliever. As such, this study will explore the possibility that disbelievers might process information in an opposite manner to that of believers, and be more likely to make the Type II error.
Approximately 40 believers and 40 disbelievers were preselected to participate in a study on individual differences and pattern detection. All potential participants completed a questionnaire battery and were sent an information sheet which gave a detailed description of the study. Participants then came into the laboratory to take part in a computerized study (written in EPRIME2). The experimenter described the study and invited questions from the participant. Participants then undertook a sound check (a very basic hearing test), saw an example of visual noise, heard an example of pink noise, listened to relaxation music and then completed eight trials; four for visual and four for the auditory sense. Each trial consisted of 8 screens of random pixilation for the visual condition and eight trials of 30-second blocks of pink noise for the auditory condition. Each participant was exposed to two weak stimuli targets, one ESP target and one trial with no targets (in counterbalanced order across all sessions). Weak stimuli comprised a series of degraded pictures or spoken words spliced into pink noise (these gradually became clearer across the eight trials). Participants were asked to note down vague impressions, thoughts and feelings on note sheets (one per trial), and to press a key on the computer if and when they could identify something in the visual or auditory noise. If they pressed enter, they were asked to type in what they saw/heard and were then prompted for a confidence rating on what they saw or heard. They were asked to press the button as many times as they saw something different or changed their minds about their confidence during the trial.
At the end of the visual block of trials, each participant was shown the target pictures they were exposed to and told whether they were weak stimuli or psi targets. At the end of the auditory block, each participant was played the auditory targets they were exposed to and told whether they were weak stimuli or psi targets.
Psi performance will be ascertained by two independent judges rating the similarity of imagery and guesses in the psi trials to four possible targets (targets were organized into orthogonal sets of four prior to the start of this experiment. Clusters of schizotypy and paranormal belief and disbelief will be compared on psi scoring and weak stimuli detection. Confidence and the number of button presses per trial will also be compared between believers and disbelievers and different types of schizotypy.
Qualitative analysis will be undertaken to explore the types of imagery people experience amid random visual and auditory noise (irrespective of the existence of a target). Differences will be explored between believers and disbelievers.
Post hoc analyses will enable further understanding of the psychology of the disbeliever, for instance, in terms of their anomalous experiences and their scoring on positive schizotypy measures.
By exploring perceptual and cognitive biases and paranormal and perception of weak stimuli in a within participants study, it will be possible to shed more light on the nature and etiology of believing in and experiencing paranormal phenomena and disbelieving in or not experiencing paranormal phenomena.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Experimental methods were used to explore the relationship between paranormal belief, cognitive perceptual measures (schizotypy, delusional ideation and transliminality) and mnemonic performance. Phase I, employing the Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm, found that participants scoring above (vs. below) the median for belief in the paranormal and delusional ideation produced higher numbers of false memories for critical lures (associative false memory). Level of paranormal belief and level of cognitive-perceptual factor had no effect upon true memory (presented items), or other measures of false memory (non presented list items and non presented critical lures). Overall, paranormal belief and cognitive-perceptual factor scores were not predictors of mnemonic performance (true and false memory). In addition to this, neither level of paranormal belief, nor level of cognitive-perceptual factor had a consistent effect on the quality of memories as measured by the remember-know procedure. Phase II, using the misinformation effect, found that only level of paranormal belief affected mnemonic performance. Participants in the upper quartile scored higher on true memory and recognised more misinformation items (false memory) than participants in the lower quartile. The cognitive-perceptual measures had no effect on memory. Whilst, positive correlations were observed between signal detection measures of memory (true d', false d', and unrelated information) these measures failed to correlate with either paranormal belief, or the cognitive-perceptual measures. Finally, level of paranormal belief and level of cognitive-perceptual factor had no effect on remember-know responses.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
OBJECTIVES:
To explore the perceptual biases (Type I and Type II errors) associated with paranormal belief and disbelief.
METHODS:
Ninety five self-defined believers and skeptics completed a questionnaire battery consisting of the Australian Sheep-Goat Scale, the Parapsychological experiences subscale of The Assessment Schedule for Altered States of Consciousness, the short version of the Oxford-Liverpool Inventory for Feelings and Experiences and the Magical Ideation Scale. Each took part in a computerized experiment consisting of one visual and one auditory block of trials, each consisting of a psi trial, two weak stimuli trials and one random trial (8 trials each). For each trial, participants were asked to make general notes and sketches on general impressions, thoughts and feelings and press a button on the computer if and when they could identify something amid visual or auditory noise.
RESULTS:
More guesses were made for the visual condition. Believers and skeptics did not differ in the number of guesses made. There were differences in the qualitative nature of guesses, the speed at which guesses were made (for the auditory condition), confidence about guesses and the number of misidentifications made. Believers and skeptics did not differ in their ability to overtly detect weak visual or auditory stimuli or in ESP performance. There were trends toward, but no significant ESP effects. Schizotypy (OLIFE) scoring indicated that there is a healthy and less healthy type of believer and a healthy and less healthy type of skeptic. There were no differences between the two types of believer on ESP scoring. The Magical Ideation scale did not correlate with ESP.
CONCLUSIONS:
There is some evidence that believing in the paranormal is associated with making the type I error. However, skeptics also perceive stimuli where none are present, particularly for the visual sense.
DISCUSSION:
Given that skeptics and believers do not differ in their detection of weak stimuli (or detection of a psi stimulus), the notion that perceptual biases are ‘errors’ could be challenged.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
An out-of-body experience or OBE is one in which the “self” or center of awareness seems to the experient to occupy temporarily a position that is spatially remote from his or her body. The experience seems are very widespread in the general population. Some studies show a close relation between the incidente of OBEs and their psychological correlates, especially personality variables, absorption, and dissociative experiences. Six specific hypotheses are tested: Students who report out-of-body experiences have a higher capacity for (1) absorption, (2) dissociation, (3) fantasy proneness, (3) kinetic and visual imagery, (4) visual and tactile hallucination, and (5) cognitive-perceptual, disorganized and interpersonal schizotypy than non-experients. A total of 648 undergraduate students population included 76% females and 24% males, who completed a number of scales. Data for experients of OBE were compared with data for those who did not (experients N= 132 vs. non experients N= 516). The results showed a higher level of cognitive-perceptual, schizotypy, absorption, dissociation, fantasy and hallucination proneness, and visual imagery in OBErs than in non-OBErs which confirm previous studies. The statistical test found that the absorption and cognitive-perceptual schizotypy were the best discriminant for visual [F (2/498)= 81.08; p< .001] and tactile hallucination [F (2/498)= 88.44; p< .001], which underlie the differ-entiation of the OBErs and non-OBErs. The term hallucination has pejorative overtones in spite of the widespread occurrence of anomalous perceptual experiences in the normal population. Some subjects report beneficial effects from OBEs in an adaptive way.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
1628 people (63% female; age range 18-80+) began the survey. Types of synaesthesia varied in incidence and occur under a variety of circumstances. The Synaesthesia Experiences Questionnaire (SEQ) was not normally distributed. It was internally reliable (Cronbach’s a = .98) and loaded onto 1 factor. SEQ scores correlated with Anomalous Experiences Inventory scores, rho= .49, p< .0001. Those who have traditional paranormal experiences scored higher on the SEQ than non-experiencers. SEQ scores correlated with positive schizotypy, rho= .46, p= .001. There was no systematic relationship between synaesthesia and well-being. This relationship appears to be mediated by schizotypy cluster membership. Twenty-seven synaesthetes (3 male and 24 female, age range 18-70) were age and gender matched to 27 controls. Each completed the SEQ, the TimeStyleTM inventory (Fortunato & Furey, 2011), the synaesthesia subscale of the Tellegen Absorption Scale, Bem’s precognitive memory task (2011), a Mental time travel task (D’Argenbeau & Van Der Linden, 2004) and an interview. There was no evidence for psi in the combined group (d = .05), the controls (d= -.014) or the synaesthetes (d= -.00). Neither the difference in scoring between synaesthetes and controls or correlation between scoring on the SEQ and psi were significant. Synaesthetic associators scored higher on psi than projectors (z= -2.00, p= .047; post hoc). Future thinking correlated with scoring on the SEQ, rho = .35, p =.011 but not with psi. Past thinking correlated with psi (r = -.277, p= .043). Mental time travel did not relate to psi but some variables were stronger in synaesthetes. An IPA suggests that ability to represent is important in synaesthesia and anomalous experiences.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Separate dimensions of schizotypy have been differentially associated with electrophysiological measures of brain function, and further shown to be modified by sex/gender. We investigated event-related potential (ERP) correlates of two subdimensions of positive schizotypy, paranormal ideation (PI) and unusual experiences (UEs). Seventy-two individuals with no psychiatric diagnosis (men=36) completed self-report measures of UE and PI and performed an auditory oddball task. Average scores for N100, N200 and P300 amplitudes were calculated for left and right anterior, central and posterior electrode sites. Multiple linear regression was used to examine the relationships between the measures of schizotypy and ERPs across the entire sample, as well as separately according to sex. PI was inversely associated with P300 amplitude at left-central sites across the entire sample, and at right-anterior electrodes in women only. Right-anterior P300 and right-posterior N100 amplitudes were negatively associated with UE in women only. Across the entire sample, UE was negatively associated with left-central N100 amplitude, and positively associated with left-anterior N200 amplitude. These results provide support from electrophysiological measures for the fractionation of the positive dimension of schizotypy into subdimensions of PI and UE, and lend indirect support to dimensional or quasidimensional conceptions of psychosis. More specifically, they suggest that PI may be associated with alteration in contextual updating processes, and that UE may reflect altered sensory/early-attention (N100) mechanisms. The sex differences observed are consistent with those previously observed in individuals with schizophrenia.

Personality Variables in Spontaneous Psi Research: Contextualizing the Boundary Construct in Its Relationship to Spontaneous Psi Phenomena
Publication year: 2008
URL:
http://www.psi-mart.com/Utrecht%20II%20Overflow/Utrecht%20II%20Program.pdf
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This paper will argue that anomaly prone-ness is fundamentally tied to the concept of boundary thinness. Boundary
thinness is a term borrowed from Hartmann (e.g., 1991) and refers to the extent to which neural structures, cognitive
processes (e.g., representations), social interactions (e.g., empathy) and cultural processes (e.g., focus on the
group rather than the individual) are inter-connected rather than separate.
A hierarchical/all levels approach to boundaries is important as different types of boundaries might relate differently
to spontaneous psi experiences. Some forms of boundary thinness may relate only to pseudo psychic experiences,
while others may relate to a mixture of pseudo and genuinely psychic experiences, whilst others may be potentially
related to instances of genuine psi. To date, there are few experiments which empirically explore how each form of
boundary thinness might impact upon spontaneous psi experiences.
It will also be argued that several superficially disparate psychometric measures and situations which are associated
with psi experiences are actually underpinned by boundary thinness. In addition, it will be argued that boundary
thinness is simultaneously a personality trait and a state of consciousness. As such, those who are hard wired
to be boundary thin should perhaps be reconsidered to be individuals who are more likely to enter boundary thin
states. This may allow for a parsimonious understanding of psi experiences — which can and do occur in everyone,
but may be more likely among certain individuals. In addition, this approach allows for greater insight into the possible
manipulation of boundary thinness, with a view to gaining greater control over anomalous experiences. For
example, a system that is too “thin” may be more associated with being overwhelmed with psi experiences.
Following this, it will be argued that there are actually healthy and unhealthy forms of one measure of boundary
thinness (positive schizotypy). This may only be ascertained by exploring how positive schizotypes score on other
psychometric variables. Interestingly, “healthy schizotypy” has recently been found to relate to evolutionary fitness.
As psi is associated with boundary thinness, it will be argued that psi may be the result of an indirect evolutionary
selection. This gives greater understanding regarding the purpose of psi as well as the continued existence of the
schizophrenia gene in the gene pool.
Finally, this paper will argue that personality and psi experiences should be considered in terms of interactionism/
situationism, and address how other variables may interact with boundary thinness in terms of the expression of psi
phenomena.

Relación entre las experiencias paranormales y esquizotipia positiva/negativa

http://www.acta.org.ar/04-WebForms/frmResumen.aspx?IdArticulo=50
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The present study investigated how the subjective paranormal experience relates to positive and negative schizotypy. It was hypothesised that those who had had paranormal experiences correlate in schyzotypy proneness, schizotypy sub-factor Unusual experiences, positive schizotypy than non -experients. Undergraduate students, and family members and friends, 57% females and 42.2% males (Mean age = 33 years old), filled two questionnaires. oxford–Liverpool inventory of Feelings and experiences –which assesses schizotypy in four dimensions– and paranormal experiences Questionnaire –which collects information on spontaneous paranormal experiences, were analized. Participants with experiences were less cognitively disorganized and reported subjectively more pleasant paranormal experiences, were less impulsive, more social, and showed less eccentric forms of behaviour, often suggesting a lack of self-control. The majority of the paranormal experiences were related to positive schizotypy score. It is noteworthy that, in an inverse direction, some paranormal experiences are also related to negative schizotypy. In conclusion, the present study implies an interaction among schizotypal personality factors that could predic the subjective quality of odd experiences. Consistent with previous research, results indicate a potentially adaptive, and indeed protective, role for paranormal beliefs and magical thinking.
