O papel da oxytocina, do cortisol e da responsividade dos cuidados no retraimento social de crianças institucionalizadas

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Institutionalization has had an impact on socio emotional development of children, contributing to how they interact with others. Despite the evidence, there are few studies that relate the development of social behavior of institutionalized children in a neurobiological framework. In this study we analyze the levels of oxytocin and cortisol of 17 infants, at the time of their admission to the institution, and the role of these hormones in the infants’ social withdrawal behavior and in caregivers’ responsiveness six months later. The results showed that infants with higher levels of cortisol, on admission, have less responsive caregivers and have a tendency to be more socially withdrawn, 6 months after. It was also found that infants with higher levels of oxytocin tend to be more socially withdrawn and have less responsive caregivers 6 months after admission The results suggest that prior hormone levels in infants, on admission, may be associated with their socio/emotional development and with the interaction quality with caregivers in the institution, 6 months after. In spite of the exploratory feature, this study reveals the importance of neurobiological factors at the admission to understand the developmental pathways in institutionalized infants.

Skin conductance and sinus arrhythmia as a complement of psychological assessments during parent-infant interactions
Publication year: 2015
URL:
http://ecpa13.com/bookofabstracts.pdf
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The impact of the quality of early interactions on infant developmental outcomes is well reported in the literature. It is well established that parental behaviors, such as sensitivity and responsivity, are crucial for the quality of the interaction. Understanding the physiological mechanisms beneath adequate/inadequate parental behaviors during these interactions may be crucial for psychological assessment and early intervention. We intend to examine the underlying physiological mechanisms associated with the quality of parental behaviors during dyadic interaction at 6 weeks and 6 months of age. A sample of 37 parents and infants participated in this study. Parental skin conductance (SC) and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) were monitored during a face-to-face (FTF) still-face (ST) procedure (FTF1 - SF – FTF2). Interactions were recorded according to the Global Rating Scales9 protocol. During FTF1, parental non-intrusive behavior is associated with lower RSA (r=-.433, p=.039). Parental non-remote behavior is associated with higher SC during the SF episode (r=.364, p=.048). Lower excited engagement is associated with higher SC (r=-.367, p=.046) during FTF2. The physiological reactions during early interaction may be an important complementary tool for the psychological assessment of parental behaviors.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Introduction: Parent-infant interaction characterized by mutual engagement difficulties and low parental sensitivity and responsiveness are associated with child developmental difficulties. The aim of this study is to to understand the behavioral and physiological features of difficulties in situations of mutual engagement, low parental sensitivity and responsiveness.
Method: A longitudinal study from 6 weeks to 18 months of the child’s life is been conducted. At 6 weeks, parental mental health and perinatal health is assessed. Separate face-to-face interactions between the infant and each parent is conducted and followed by the face-to-face still-face paradigm and during these interactions parental respiratory sinus arrhythmia, heart rate and skin conductance are monitored. At 6 and 18 months the infant social withdrawal and the infant psychomotor and mental development are conducted.
Results: We expect to provide data on the behavioral and physiological features of early interactions and to discuss methodological options.
Conclusions: The comprehension of the mechanisms on the basis of difficulties in the interaction is fundamental for the development of primary prevention programs and early intervention.

Depth of sedation with dexmedetomidine increases transcranial magnetic stimulation-evoked potential amplitude non-linearly
Publication year: 2023
URL:
https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S0007-0912(23)00347-1
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Background: Cortical excitability is higher in unconsciousness than in wakefulness, but it is unclear how this relates to anaesthesia. We investigated cortical excitability in response to dexmedetomidine, the effects of which are not fully known.
Methods: We recorded transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and EEG in frontal and parietal cortex of 20 healthy subjects undergoing dexmedetomidine sedation in four conditions (baseline, light sedation, deep sedation, recovery). We used the first component (0-30 ms) of the TMS-evoked potential (TEP) to measure cortical excitability (amplitude), slope, and positive and negative peak latencies (collectively, TEP indices). We used generalised linear mixed models to test the effect of condition, brain region, and responsiveness on TEP indices.
Results: Compared with baseline, amplitude in the frontal cortex increased by 6.52 µV (P<0.001) in light sedation, 4.55 µV (P=0.003) in deep sedation, and 5.03 µV (P<0.001) in recovery. Amplitude did not change in the parietal cortex. Compared with baseline, slope increased in all conditions (P<0.02) in the frontal but not parietal cortex. The frontal cortex showed 5.73 µV higher amplitude (P<0.001), 0.63 µV ms-1 higher slope (P<0.001), and 2.2 ms shorter negative peak latency (P=0.001) than parietal areas. Interactions between dexmedetomidine and region had effects over amplitude (P=0.004) and slope (P=0.009), with both being higher in light sedation, deep sedation, and recovery compared with baseline.
Conclusions: Transcranial magnetic stimulation-evoked potential amplitude changes non-linearly as a function of depth of sedation by dexmedetomidine, with a region-specific paradoxical increase. Future research should investigate other anaesthetics to elucidate the link between cortical excitability and depth of sedation.
