BACKGROUND:
Salivettes (Sarstedt, UK) are a popular method of collecting saliva for measurement of IgA in psychoimmune research. It is a cause for concern that previous small-scale research suggests Salivettes reduce the level of IgA detected. This paper presents three studies that explore comprehensively the effects of Salivette use on the measurement of IgA and total protein in saliva.
METHODS:
In study I, 35 participants provided saliva using Salivettes and passive drooling in a counterbalanced design. In study II, 38 saliva samples were collected via passive drooling and filtered through the cotton wadding of a Salivette in order to directly test whether Salivettes alter the IgA concentration of saliva. Study III tested whether Salivettes leaked protein into the saliva. Three different volumes of saline were added to the Salivettes and the protein levels in the extracted saliva tested.
FINDINGS:
Study I and II both found that only around 50% of the variance in IgA from passively drooled saliva could be explained using the IgA concentrations from Salivette filtered IgA. Both studies also revealed a substantial reduction in IgA from Salivette filtered saliva. Study III showed that saline filtered through Salivettes acquired a substantial and - volume dependent – amount of total protein.
DISCUSSION:
A large amount of random error is introduced into the measurement of IgA and total protein in saliva extracted from Salivettes. This suggests Salivettes are not appropriate for collecting saliva for IgA and protein analysis, and researchers investigating psycho-immune relationships should carefully consider alternative methods for collection.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Our aim was to compare the effect of standard and cognitive hypnorelaxations on the psycho-neuro-immunological status in healthy stressed students (before-during examination term) and in chronic anxious patients. The patients (n=30, mean age: 47.5) and the students (n=20, mean age: 20.5) completed perceived stress and coping (Rahe), depression (BDI), hypnotizability (Harvard), trait and state anxiety (Spielberger) tests. Tensions of 7 muscles were measured by computer-assisted surface EMG. ACTH, cortisol and special immunological markers (LL-37, lactoferrin, sICAM-1, IL-6, galectin-3) were assayed in blood plasma. Biosamples were collected before and after one cognitive and two standard hypnorelaxations.
In students, significant decrease of ACTH level was detected after each hypnorelaxation session (p<0.05); only standard sessions were effective in downregulating cortisol level (p<0.01). Onset of the examination term enhanced muscle tension dramatically in students (p<0.0001). In patients, state anxiety score was significantly decreased after each hypnorelaxation (p<0.05), and cortisol was reduced after the cognitive (p<0.001) and the second standard (p<0.01) sessions. Interestingly, cognitive hypnorelaxation resulted in an increase of muscle tension (especially on the left side) both in students and in patients. Standard hypnorelaxation reduced muscle tension only in patients (p<0.01). No significant changes were seen in immunological markers. All in all, muscle tension scores appeared to be sensitive indicators of psychological stress in addition to stress hormones (ACTH, cortisol). Relaxed psychosomatic state seemed to be more facilitated by standard hypnorelaxation than by a cognitive coping one.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.
