Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Psychometry describes a type of anomalous cognition which permits a psychic to experience such impressions using a physical object. A number of psychics have gained a reputation as psychic detectives using such things as photographs, a town map, or a piece of clothing. In fact, many people seem to have a high opinion of the abilities of psychics, but a person's face is an important source of information for identifying others, and conveys significant social information, probably due to its important role in the psychological processes involved in social interaction. The aim of the present study was to compare a group of ordinary people (non-psychics) with selfclaimed psychics in order to determine if participants were capable of distinguishing between living and dead people from photographs of same. The sample consisted of 169 participants divided into two groups: "psychics" (N = 74) and "non-psychics" (N = 95). No significant differences were found. Those participants who claimed to have psychometric ability (that is, were able to pick up impressions from an object by being in physical contact with it) neither obtained psi hitting, nor demonstrated greater variability in their psi hits. One possible interpretation would be that some of the participants in this group had difficulties with correctly interpreting the psi signal.

Publication year: 2009

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Psychic reading is a method used to foretell the future of an individual. However, cold reading is a non-paranormal technique used by many self-claimed psychics and mediums to determine details about another person in order to convince them that the reader knows much more about a subject than he or she actually does. We wanted to explore some strategies for using and appraising the so-called "tokenobject" effect common in psychic reading. We planned to follow the design of our earlier research using a psychometry procedure with a sample of ordinary people (non-psychics) and a sample of self-claimed psychics. One of the aims of the study was to determine if the 'psychics' participants could give impressions while touching the objects of two sitters. The experiment was introduced to the participants by telling them that two different conditions, "face-to-face" and "remote" psychometry, were being undertaken using a physical object as psistimuli. The sample consisted of 83 participants. We concluded that those participants who claimed to have psychometry psi ability ("Psychic" group) showed greater psi hitting than "Non-Psychics" in both conditions ("remote" and "face-to-face"). Because face-to-face readings allow for sensory cues, no firm conclusion of "genuine" psi can be justified from such an experiment. Therefore we should treat this significant finding with caution.

Brain blood flow during psychokinesis tasks - Biophysical and psychophysiological study on a psychic
Publication year: 2008

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The authors tested a famous Chinese psychic (female, 40 years old) during psychokinesis tasks “teleportation”. Targets were vitamin pills on an electric balance or in a bottle. The subject tried to teleport the pills in free style tests for 30-45 min. During the tasks, her brain blood flow was measured by functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), and also respiration, electrodermal activity and photoplethysmograms were measured. Pill weights were measured with an analytical semi-micro balance every second at 0.01 mg accuracy. Video cameras, field RNGs, a thermograph, field IR sensors and an electrostatic voltmeter were set near the balance. The subject was given a profile questionnaire and 5 questionnaires on character traits such as Big Five test. The Uchida-Kraepelin Psychodiagnostic test was also done. Moreover, to allow comparison to other studies, the subject was given a facial recognition test using photos of a young Japanese woman's face as stimuli. No teleportation phenomena were observed. Brain blood flow increased at the subject’s right cerebral hemisphere during the tasks. Activated areas were similar to those during facial recognition tests. Only one of the field RNGs showed a significant deviation during the experimental period. Electrostatic voltmeter measurements suggested that the electric charge of her body was disturbed slightly during tasks. Based on her results of psychological tests, the subject’s personality was evaluated as ordinary, and not special.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The relationship between belief in extra-terrestrial life, UFO-related beliefs and paranormal belief was investigated. Data were collected via paper-and-pencil and online versions of the measures. Both data collection methods produced similar results and revealed that UFO-related beliefs were more highly correlated with paranormal beliefs than belief in extra-terrestrial life. Partial correlation control- ling for the overlap between belief in extra-terrestrial life and UFO-related beliefs found moderate positive correlations between UFO-related beliefs and paranormal beliefs, and weak negative correlations between belief in extra-terrestrial life and paranormal beliefs. These findings clearly indicated that only the more extreme UFO-related beliefs were associated with paranormal belief.

Experimental investigation of a psi training program

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
OBJECTIVES:
1) Test the claim that transformative practices may lead to enhanced intuitive experiences. 2) Develop a well-controlled experimental design for the “feeling of being stared at” paradigm that can be adapted to naturalistic settings, using the internet as a medium for carrying live video images.
METHODS:
We tested sixteen people who had been practicing the Transcendental Meditation TM-Sidhi technique for a minimum of 10 years, and 16 adult non-meditators. One person is a sender (S) and one a receiver (R).
S viewed a screen showing a live video streaming image of the distant Receiver during sending periods, and during no-sending periods, S viewed a randomly selected static picture from a pool of pre-selected neutral photographs.
R viewed a web page that informs R that a trial is in progress, but does not indicate whether the distant sender was viewing their image or not. R is asked “Are you being stared at?”
Five seconds after each trial began, R saw a count-down timer and had 15 seconds to respond “yes” or “no.” If no response was received within 15 seconds, the trial was recorded as a pass. If R did respond, feedback was provided indicating that the response was correct or incorrect. S also saw this feedback. The assignment of staring vs. nonstaring conditions per trial was determined by a random process.
RESULTS:
The two groups showed no differences in self-rated ability to perceive someone staring at them, in how well they thought they would do in the test, or in self-assessed psychic abilities. However, the non-meditator group reported having had the feeling of being stared at significantly more than the meditators.
Overall the control group performed slightly, but non-significantly better than the meditation group. On average the meditation group performed closely to chance expectation over the entire sequence of 100 trials, but the control group progressively improved.
Meditators reported higher levels of self-transcendence than non-meditators. Contrary to prediction, meditators reported higher levels of stress than the controls.
CONCLUSION:
Overall, this study did not show that attention training, in this case specifically meaning the technique known as the TM-Sidhis, would improve performance on a “feeling of being stared at” task.
The TM group’s self-transcendence scores were significantly higher than the control groups, but contrary to prediction, their perceived stress scores were not lower.
The most consistent finding in this experiment was the sheep-goat effect: Participants’ expectations and beliefs was the best predictor of their actual performance.

Individual, perceptual and psychological differences between psi-tested self-claimed psychics and non-psychics
Publication year: 2016
URL:
http://search.informit.com.au/documentSummary;res=IELHSS;dn=099628941543192
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The specific aim of the present study was to find psychological differences between psychic and non-psychics. Specifically, we hypothesized that the self-claimed psychics score higher than non-psychics on the following four dimensions: (1) Individual Differences (i.e., neuroticism, extroversion, psychoticism, cognitive and emotional empathy, and defense style); (2) Psychopathology (i.e., healthy and negative schizotypy, dissociation, hallucinations and abnormal perceptions, magical ideation and perceptual aberration); (3) Boundaries (i.e., transliminality and boundary 'thinness'); and (4) Perception (i.e., perceptual cognition and imagery, and sensationseeking). The database used in this paper was originally collected as part of a project that investigated the so-called token-object effect (Parra & Argibay, 2013a, 2013b). Two categorization procedures were performed in order to split the sample into (1) Psychic/high-psi-scorers (n = 48) and (2) Non-psychic/low-psi-scorers (n = 44). Psychic/high-psiscorers scored higher than non-psychic/low-psi-scorers on Extroversion, and they scored lower on Neuroticism and Psychoticism, which confirm previous findings. Other results showed that psychic/high-psi-scorers tended to have 'thinner' boundaries, and they reported more unusual/psychic experiences, than non-psychic/low-psiscorers. The two groups, however, did not differ on schizotypy or dissociation. Generally speaking, the typical psychic in our study (similar to the one described by Eysenck) is 'sanguine', tends to be lively, sociable, carefree, talkative, pleasure-seeking, optimistic, and leadership-oriented.

Dissociation, absorption, fantasy proneness and sensation-seeking in psychic claimants
Publication year: 2012
Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
Building on evidence to suggest that strong believers in and experients of paranormal phenomena tend to be fantasy-prone individuals, we hypothesized that individuals who claimed paranormal /anomalous abilities would also score higher
on dissociation, absorption and sensation-seeking than individuals who did not claim paranormal /anomalous experiences. One hundred and thirty-two participants were recruited by media advertisements and a mailing list. The participants
completed questionnaires and interviews during two-hour workshops, organized free of charge at the Institute of Paranormal Psychology (IPP) in Buenos Aires. When comparing persons who claimed to be psychics and those who did not, the ‘psychic’ group (N = 40) had significantly higher scores on Dissociation, Absorption and Fantasy Proneness than did the ‘non-psychic’ group (N = 40). The hypotheses were supported in that the psychic group did have significantly higher scores on the Dissociation (t [78] = 21.12, p = 0.01, d = 0.65), Absorption (t [78] = 17.81, p < 0.001, d = 1.09) and Fantasy Proneness (t [78] = 12.77, p = 0.01, d = 0.72) scales than did the non-psychics. However, scores on the Sensation-Seeking scale were not significantly different; indeed, the non-psychic group scored slightly higher, contrary to prediction. We also found some gender differences, with male psychics having significantly higher mean scores than female psychics on measures of Dissociation and Fantasy Proneness, and suggestively higher scores on Absorption and Sensation-Seeking. We suggest that these variables are taken into account when recruiting and screening participants for future studies of ESP.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Mediumship research at the Windbridge Institute includes a three-tiered approach to investigations of secular, American mediums. The Information, Operation, and Application research programs examine (i) the accuracy of the information mediums report; (ii) the mediums’ phenomenology, physiology, and psychology, and (iii) the potential social applications of mediumship readings, respectively. As part of the Operation research program, the current study develops and employs web-based surveys in order to gather novel data potentially identifying of unique demographic, cognitive, psychological, physiological, familial, cultural, and phenomenological characteristics of self-identifying mediums in the US. Surveys regarding anomalous experiences and beliefs have regularly been an important research methodology in parapsychology and associated psychological, sociological, etc., fields. The findings from previous survey research with mediums can only be generalized to the specific, organized, belief system- and geographically-associated populations under examination. The subset of American mediums not associated with any formal national organization and who hold no organized belief system may potentially serve as the majority in the US but have not, to our knowledge, been specifically assessed using instruments designed to gather information about their general demographics and other characteristics. The study consists of two parts. In Part 1, responses to standardized questionnaires are collected from both medium and non-medium US Internet users. Basic sociodemographic data as well as information about respondents’ major personality characteristics; psychological well-being; compassion; spiritual experiences; fear of death; and childhood abuse and trauma is collected using previously published standardized surveys. In addition, questionnaires were created to assess physical health; end-of-life and after death communication experiences; and awareness and experience of psi-related phenomena. In Part 2, the mediums who participated in Part 1 are invited to complete additional survey materials requesting specific information about their mediumistic experiences. That survey includes open-ended and forced choice elements assessing aspects of the respondents’ history, practices, and experiences. Part 2 also includes open-ended items inquiring about experiences during communication with the deceased. This text collected describing the mediums’ phenomenology in their own words will be analyzed using Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) text analysis software which calculates the degree to which 80 different psychologically meaningful categories of words including positive/negative emotions, self-references, causal words, attentional focus, emotionality, social relationship including honesty and deception, and thinking styles are used in a given text. Findings from this study will elucidate potentially unique characteristics of secular American mediums not heretofore examined. The study will also provide the groundwork for more detailed hypotheses and further studies of more specific aspects of mediumship in this growing population; this may include future studies of the potential psychological, biological, and/or neurophysiological correlates of the mediumistic experience.

Quantitative and qualitative analyses of mediumistic and psychic experiences
Publication year: 2017

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Mediums are individuals who report experiencing regular communication with the deceased; the phenomenon of mediumship has been reported in cultures all over the world since time immemorial. The current study examined similarities and differences in the reported experiences of secular American mediums (those not associated with any formal religious organization) during mediumship readings involving communication with the deceased and during psychic readings for/about the living. Participant responses to two counter-balanced, open-ended online survey items were quantitatively analyzed using Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) text analysis software and qualitatively analyzed using a content analysis methodology. Participants included 113 self-identified mediums and 14 Windbridge Certified Research Mediums; over 90% were white females; their average age was 54.2 ± 9.6 years; 97% reported being able to distinguish between mediumistic and psychic experiences; and 122 provided complete survey responses. Statistically significant differences between descriptions of mediumistic and psychic experiences were seen regarding the proportion of words included in the LIWC categories of: social processes (11.76% ± 5.8% vs. 9.93% ± 5.64%, p=0.004); perceptual processes (6.63% ± 4.31% vs. 4.81% ± 3.81%, p<0.001); ingestion (0.23% ± 0.57% vs. 0.05% ± 0.20%, p<0.001); past-focused time orientation (3.09% ± 3.23% vs. 2.06% ± 3.19%, p=0.001); religion (0.90% ± 0.11% vs. 0.34% ± 0.09%, p<0.001); and insight (5.06% ± 2.97% vs. 6.48% ± 4.30%, p=0.002). The proportion of words describing positive and negative emotions, present-focused and future-focused time orientation, health, and money were not different. Qualitative content analysis found three overarching, summative themes regarding mediumistic communication: preparation, communication triangulated, and experience of the communication. Four overarching, summative themes emerged from the text regarding psychic readings for the living: establishing the connection, experiencing the connection, content of the reading, and psychic information flowing from various sources. Perhaps most interesting is the finding that experiences of psychic connections during readings for the living included “non-specific discarnates” as a source of information; this strongly calls into question theoretical frameworks that posit separating mediums’ experiences into categories that do and do not involve communication with the deceased as well as the continued use of terminology reflecting such a separation.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
There is a lack of research examining the mental health of practicing mediums, yet the nature of mediumship work inherently presents a number of challenges to the mental health of practitioners. In this study, we aimed to gain an understanding of how mediums experience their mental health in relation to their mediumistic practice and how they recognise and respond to psychological difficulties experienced by their clients. Fourteen mediums from the North West of England took part in one-to-one interviews, which were transcribed and subject to interpretative phenomenological analysis. Four themes were identified: from past traumas to mediumistic identity; spirit makes sense, mental illness is chaos; being resilient but vulnerable; and ethical mediumistic practice. The research highlights the value of not dismissing or attempting to change appraisals of valued aspects of mediums’ anomalous experiences. However, the findings do indicate that support for exposure to clients’ difficulties might be helpful.

Genetics of psychic ability - A pilot case-control exome sequencing study
Publication year: 2021

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
INTRODUCTION
It is commonly believed that psychic ability, like many mental and physical traits, runs in families. This suggests the presence of a genetic component. If such a component were found, it would constitute a biological marker of psychic ability and inform environmental or pharmacologic means of enhancing or suppressing this ability.
METHODS
A case-control study design was used to evaluate differences between psychic cases and non-psychic controls. Over 3,000 candidates globally were screened through two online surveys to locate people who claimed they and other family members were psychic. Measures of relevance to the claimed abilities (e.g., absorption, empathy, schizotypy) were collected and based on those responses, individuals with indications of psychotic or delusional tendencies were excluded from further consideration. Eligible candidates were then interviewed and completed additional screening tests. Thirteen individuals were selected as the final “psychic cases,” and ten age-, sex-, and ethnicity-matched individuals with no claims of psychic ability were selected as controls. DNA from the saliva of these 23 participants was subjected to whole-exome sequencing. Two independent bioinformatics analyses were blindly applied to the sequenced data, one focusing exclusively on protein-coding sequences and another that also included some adjacent noncoding sequences.
RESULTS
Sequencing data were obtained for all samples, except for one in the control group that did not pass the quality controls and was not included in further analyses. After unblinding the datasets, none of the protein-coding sequences (i.e., exons) showed any variation that discriminated between cases and controls. However, a difference was observed in the intron (i.e., non-protein-coding region) adjacent to an exon in the TNRC18 gene (Trinucleotide Repeat-Containing Gene 18 Protein) on chromosome 7. This variation, an alteration of GG to GA, was found in 7 of 9 controls and was absent from all psychic cases.
DISCUSSION
The most conservative interpretation of these results is that they result from random population sampling. However, when the results are considered in relation to other lines of evidence, the results are more provocative. Further research is justified to replicate and extend these findings.

Survival psi and somatic psi: Exploratory quantitative phenomenological analyses of blinded mediums’ experiences of communication with the deceased and psychic readings for the living

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
In this study, we quantitatively assessed mediums’ phenomenology during readings in which survival psi is ostensibly used to telepathically communicate with physically deceased targets (discarnates) and during psychic readings for living targets to represent somatic psi which cannot be experimentally demonstrated. We also correlated dimensions of phenomenology with reading accuracy. Ten Windbridge Certified Research Mediums (WCRMs) participated in a baseline assessment and then in three counter-balanced conditions—a blinded reading for a living target, a blinded reading for a deceased target, and a control condition—and completed the Phenomenology of Consciousness Inventory (PCI) at baseline prior to the first condition and after each of the three conditions. In a significant proportion of the readings (74%; p = .032), the blinded WCRM’s impressions accurately reflected whether the target was living or deceased. Hypnoidal state scores, which estimate an individual’s ‘trance state,’ were significantly higher for each of the two reading conditions than for the baseline and control conditions. Both types of readings demonstrated significantly higher scores for the PCI (sub)dimensions of altered time sense, imagery, imagery amount, and direction of attention and lower scores for the dimension volitional control. As predicted, scores for love were significantly higher for blinded readings for deceased targets than for living targets (3.65 ± 0.63 vs. 2.75 ± 1.18, respectively; t[9] = 2.78, p = .02, two-tailed). The global accuracy scores of readings for living targets (2.38 ± 1.51) were significantly negatively correlated with imagery vividness (r[6] = -0.76, p = .027) and absorption (r[6] = -0.74, p = .037). The global accuracy scores given to readings for deceased targets (3.22 ± 1.56) were not significantly correlated to any PCI dimensions. However, the correlations were significantly different between the deceased target condition and the living target condition for positive affect and accuracy (z = 1.92, p = .027 [one-tailed]). Overall, the novel quantitative evidence collected during this study under blinded, randomized, and counterbalanced conditions may reflect the general phenomenology of psi and supports and adds to the empirical comparisons of mediums’ psychic functioning and survival psi experiences.
