Start date: 1994
History:
The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Title: BIAL Grants
Start date: 1994
History:
In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
A survey of anomalous/paranormal experiences was carried out in two groups: readers of paranormal issues (RPT) (n= 432) and psychology undergraduate students (n=392). A questionnaire was devised in order to measure type and frequency of experiences and the degree of disturbance they generated. Over two thirds of the RPT respondents and half of the student respondents reported to have had telepathic experiences, ESP dreams, out-of-the-body experiences, and to have had spiritual contact. Almost two thirds of the respondents indicated that at least one of their experiences had been disturbing. Particularly, undergradiate students sample reported experiences such as poltergeist (p< .001) and spiritual possession (p=.0002) compared with RPT sample. An average significantly greater of experiences was obtained in RPT than the one for the students (M= 6.12 vs. 3.19, pdif <.0001).

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
J. Milton and R. Wiseman (1999) attempted to replicate D. Bern and C. Honorton's (1994) meta-analysis, which yielded evidence that the ganzfeld is a suitable method for demonstrating anomalous communication. Using a database of 30 ganzfeld and autoganzfeld studies, Milton and Wiseman's meta-analysis yielded an effect size (ES) of only 0.013 (Stouffer Z = 0.70, p = .24, one-tailed). Thus they failed to replicate Bem and Honorton's finding (ES = 0.162, Stouffer Z = 2.52, p = 5.90 × 10-3, one-tailed). The authors conducted stepwise performance comparisons between all available databases of ganzfeld research. Larger aggregates of such studies were formed, including a database comprising 79 ganzfeld-autoganzfeld studies (ES = 0.138, Stouffer Z = 5.66, p = 7.78 × 10-9). Thus Bern and Honorton's positive conclusion was confirmed. More accurate population parameters for the ganzfeld and autoganzfeld domains were calculated. Significant bidirectional psi effects were also found in all databases. The ganzfeld appears to be a replicable technique for producing psi effects in the laboratory.

The effect of a change in pro attitude on paranormal performance: A pilot study using naïve and sophisticated skeptics
Publication year: 2005
URL:
http://www.scientificexploration.org/journal/
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
A computerized symbol-identifying experiment was conducted to test Thalbourne’s (2004) concept of the ‘‘pro attitude’’ (an attitude towards a favorable outcome in a normal or paranormal task). Participants were required to identify the correct symbols randomly presented on computer in a run of 50 trials. Skeptics were given a second run. After each run, hit-rates were presented on screen. A subgroup of randomly selected skeptics were informed that scores, if sufficiently high or low, indicate statistical evidence of psi. It was hypothesized that news of this information (the ‘‘treatment’’) would alter the pro attitude of some skeptics and lead them to try to score at chance, rather than risk producing scores that might indicate psi. A significant correlation between hitrate and belief in psi after treatment (but not before treatment) was found for ‘‘converted’’ skeptics (i.e., ‘‘new believers’’ in psi). Post hoc evidence showed a significantly high hit-rate on symbol identification after conversion (but not before conversion). These results suggest a ‘‘conversion effect’’ in some skeptics, thus indicating a change in pro attitude. It was concluded that further research on the pro attitude is warranted since evidence of same may help identify sources of paranormal effects.

Use of a complex psi-mediated timing task

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This work builds upon Savva and French (2001), undertaken to test the success of applying evolutionary theory to parapsychological research. Although two unsuccessful presentiment experiments did not support the hypothesis, it was felt that adapting another previously successful paradigm might well provide support for the hypothesis that psi is a 'pre-sense'.
It was Thouless and Wiesner (1946) who first proposed a pre-sense theory of psi. It is very easy to imagine the adaptive potential of a precognitive ability, where an organism that could make use of information about a future state would have a survival advantage over an organism that could not. If we suggest that the psi-signal, if it exists at all, only provides correct information part of the time (and research would suggest that this is only very slightly above chance) then it is easy to see why the conventional senses evolved over the initial psi-sense. Even a primitive eye would allow inference about future conditions (for example, locating a predator) to be more accurate than the psi-signal.
Psi-timing research has been conducted by a number of researchers (Lowry, 1981; Schmeidler & Borchardt, 1981; Radin & Bosworth, 1985; May, Radin, Hubbard, Humphrey, & Utts, 1985; Radin & May, 1986 and Braud & Shafer, 1989) and the overall conclusions from the area are positive. Psi-timing experiments generally consist of a behavioural component based on the timing of a key-press, which affects a complex process resulting in a hit or miss.
The current research is an adaptation of the Braud and Shafer (1989) methodology. Braud and Shafer's participants pressed a keyboard button which recorded the current time and used the number to seed a random number generator, which in turn produced a random number between one and six. The participant pressed a keyboard button a second time and produced another random number through the same process. The two numbers were then compared and the trial scored as a hit (if the two numbers matched) or a miss (if they were different).
The current study changed the Braud and Shafer methodology by replacing the second key-press with a simulated key-press (therefore making it a test of precognition). Also different was that a hit resulted in the presentation of a neutral picture, and a miss resulted in the presentation of a spider picture. It was hypothesised that those rating themselves as spider fearful after the experiment (using a fear of spiders questionnaire) would score more hits than the non-spider-fearful, using precognitive information about the threatening stimulus to illicit a behavioural avoidance response by timing the keyboard press correctly.
Fifty participants contributed 1800 trials, consisting of 36 trials per participant. The overall hit rate was 16.1% and did not differ significantly from the mean chance expectation (MCE) of 16.7% (t (49) = -.773; p >.05). The difference in scoring between the spider-fearful and the non-spider- fearful was tested through an independent t-test and was not significant, t (48) = .896; p>.05. The hit rate for the spider fearful group was 15.5% and did not differ significantly from chance (t (25) = -1.088; p>.05) and for the non-spider-fearful group the hit rate was 16.8% which also did not differ significantly from chance (t (23) = .123; p>.05). One thousand control trials were conducted before and after the experimental study (two thousand in total where both key-presses were simulated) and resulted in a combined hit rate of 16.2% which a binomial test found was not significantly different from MCE (p>.05). Binomial tests on the control runs, before and after, were also non-significant and showed that, individually, they did not deviate significantly from MCE.
The conclusions drawn from the results are that despite previous significant results, no evidence for a psi-mediated timing response can be found in the current study. No further psi-timing experiments are planned. However further research is being conducted to test the hypothesis that psi is a pre-sense.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Psychic reading is a method used to foretell the future of an individual. However, cold reading is a non-paranormal technique used by many self-claimed psychics and mediums to determine details about another person in order to convince them that the reader knows much more about a subject than he or she actually does. We wanted to explore some strategies for using and appraising the so-called "tokenobject" effect common in psychic reading. We planned to follow the design of our earlier research using a psychometry procedure with a sample of ordinary people (non-psychics) and a sample of self-claimed psychics. One of the aims of the study was to determine if the 'psychics' participants could give impressions while touching the objects of two sitters. The experiment was introduced to the participants by telling them that two different conditions, "face-to-face" and "remote" psychometry, were being undertaken using a physical object as psistimuli. The sample consisted of 83 participants. We concluded that those participants who claimed to have psychometry psi ability ("Psychic" group) showed greater psi hitting than "Non-Psychics" in both conditions ("remote" and "face-to-face"). Because face-to-face readings allow for sensory cues, no firm conclusion of "genuine" psi can be justified from such an experiment. Therefore we should treat this significant finding with caution.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Although the question 'Does psi exist?' has become a recurrent and intransigent problem for psychological science, seen from a historical and social context, there appear to be reasons as to why no determined effort has been made to resolve the question. The sporadic exchanges from parapsychologists and critics appear only to reinforce the status quo: At most, it is agreed that some form of 'anomaly' has been established but there is no consensus about its nature. Yet such a defeatist stance shies away from the long tradition of research into spontaneous phenomena, as well as experimental research with dreams and hypnosis, all of which suggests that, if psi is real, it is not just an anomaly but has true information content and dynamic effects. This work is briefly reviewed and then, since much of the current controversy has centred on the ganzfeld technique, this is used as an example of the issues involved. The ganzfeld induces sleep-onset imagery during which randomly selected film clips are viewed by a sender as a source of psi-mediated information to be incorporated into the imagery. Our current development of the ganzfeld technique, known as the digital autoganzfeld, takes the work beyond 'anomaly status' since it enables real-time recordings to be made of apparently high-quality psi as it enters consciousness. Initial findings from this illustrate the complexity of the phenomena and the need for more adventurous designs in order to stimulate theory development. There is no doubt that technology now exists which would enable us to resolve the issues raised. Whether the area turns out to be a mixture of rampant fraud, artefact and subjective validation or to present genuine phenomena, a resolution of the issue may be seen as having unwanted implications for psychology which may be one of the factors explaining why the controversy is left to continue as it is, unresolved. New questions are needed which take into account the natural context in which psi appears to occur, along with the support needed to reach clear answers.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
This study tested a proposed model wherein a receiver in ganzfeld protocol would show a mentation-reinforcing skin-conductance change when a sender decided their mentation was target-relevant. This would be seen whether the mentation heard by the sender was True-Feedback (TF) or False-Feedback (FF) i.e. the sender's decision initiated the skin-conductance change.
Based on the receiver's ranking of target video clip, there was no evidence of telepathy with only 24 direct hits (πo = 0.49, p=0.33). However, the receiver did show a skin-conductance response when the sender thought the mentation was relevant to the target. The apparent discrepancy highlights the low correlation (rho=-0.11) between the target-relevance of the receiver's mentation and the final rank given to the target, implying that there are limitations to the standard ganzfeld protocol for producing reliable telepathy effects.
Correlations were found between variance of the local magnetic field and telepathy success (Overall: Spearman r=+0.122, p=0.12; FF: r=+0.194, p=0.09; TF: r=-0.239, p=0.05). This was in the predicted direction overall and for the FF, but reversed for TF, possibly implying that different primary processes operate in each condition (negative correlations are more usually observed in micro-PK studies). A predicted positive correlation with magnetic field intensity was also found (Overall: r=-0.255, p=0.08; FF: r=-0.300, p=0.02; TF: r=-0.209, p=0.08). 42 of the receivers were also measured to see their skin-conductance responses to an applied magnetic field.
Although overall they showed the expected slight increase in the variance of skin conductance, there were no significant correlations between this and telepathy success.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The article has the purpose of making readily available for scrutiny primary sources relating to studies that give evidence of psi-phenomena. Although the list is not offered as providing compelling evidence or “proof” of psi, it is meant to provide a strong case for a recruitment of resources. The effects are not marginal or non-replicable ones although it is clear that in many cases they appear to be dependent on certain experimenters and participants.

The first digital autoganzfeld study using a real-time judging procedure
Publication year: 2004
URL:
http://ejp.wyrdwise.com/EJP%20v19.pdf
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
A new technique for digital autoganzfeld is used, in which the receiver’s mentation report is captured and automatically stored to a digital audio file to make possible a playback of the film clips (picture and film sound) and the mentation (sound) exactly synchronously. This also makes it possible to superimpose the mentation report on the three control (decoy) film clips. This feature might facilitate the evaluation of a trial and render better insights into the study of psi. Another advantage with the new digital system is that it is possible to allow two target film clips to be used rather than one, which is a more time and cost efficient way of collecting data. In order to evaluate how well the newly developed digital autoganzfeld system works, it was used in 128 trials in which 64 pairs of receivers and senders took part. It was hypothesised that the digital ganzfeld result would statistically significantly exceed the mean chance expectation (25%) as measured by direct hits, the sessions being evaluated by an external judge. The result was a direct hit rate of 23% (p=.386, binomial one-tailed test), which was close to chance expectation. In
half the trials, the receivers also evaluated their sessions, which resulted in a direct hit rate of 14% (p=.050, binomial two-tailed test). Exploratory analyses yielded results that might explain the failure to give a significant psi-hitting result.

Whether the area turns out to be a mixture of rampant fraud, artefact and subjective validation or to present genuine phenomena, a resolution of the issue may be seen as having unwanted implications for psychology -- which may be one of the factors explaining why the controversy is left to continue as it is, unresolved. New questions are needed which take into account the natural context in which psi appears to occur, along with the support needed to reach clear answers.

Remarkable correspondances between Ganzfeld mentation and target content - psi or a cognitive illusion?
Publication year: 2004
URL:
http://gup.ub.gu.se/publication/105460-remarkable-correspondences-between-ganzfeld-mentation-and-target-content-psi-or-a-cognitive-illusion
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Remarkable correspondences between Ganzfeld mentation and target content have been reported since the early start of Ganzfeld experiments in parapsychology. These correspondences may be due to some anomalous information transfer (e.g., telepathy) or they may be due to a cognitive illusion on the part of the person who perceives them as remarkable. The present paper presents two studies conducted in order to investigate which of these two possibilities is the more probable. Both studies were based on data collected during the first formal experiment run with a new technique called Digital Ganzfeld (Goulding, Westerlund, Parker & Wackermann, 2001). In this experiment the receiver’s mentation was stored as a digital audio file that was synchronized with the target videoclip (as well as with the three decoy clips, as all clips were of exactly the same length). An external judge (JW) then played the mentation file together with the different clips in the set that was used and ranked the different clips according to similarities with the mentation. The main result was close to chance with a direct hit rate of 23% (Goulding, Westerlund, Parker & Wackermann, 2004). However, at the same time as the judge did this judging, he also tried to discern any correspondences between the mentation and any of the four clips (before knowing which one was the target) that appeared to him to be very remarkable (presented as Study 1 in this paper). A total of 20 remarkable correspondences were collected. Of these, only 6 (30%) were correspondences between the mentation and the target whereas the remaining 14 (70%) were correspondences between the mentation and decoys. This result is not significantly different from chance expectation. It was argued that this result gives some support to the cognitive illusion hypothesis, but that the study was lacking in statistical power. In order to gain stronger statistical power, a group of 11 students rated each of the 20 correspondences on scales ranging from 0-100 (presented as Study 2 in the present paper). The students did not rate the correspondences that were hits (i.e., correspondences with the target) as significantly more impressive than the correspondences that were misses (i.e., correspondences with one of the decoys). This result speaks against the psi-hypothesis, but the results should be interpreted with some caution since the students could not be said to have been 100% blind. Taken together, the results of the two studies presented here help us be more conservative about concluding that remarkable correspondences between receiver mentation and target content are due to psi when they may be due to cognitive illusions (or subjective validation).

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Parapsychology is the scientific investigation of apparently paranormal mental phenomena (such as telepathy, i.e., "mind reading"), also known as psi. Despite widespread public belief in such phenomena and over 75 years of experimentation, there is no compelling evidence that psi exists. In the present study, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used in an effort to document the existence of psi. If psi exists, it occurs in the brain, and hence assessing the brain directly should be more sensitive than using indirect behavioral methods (as have been used previously). To increase sensitivity, this experiment was designed to produce positive results if telepathy, clairvoyance (i.e., direct sensing of remote events), or precognition (i.e., knowing future events) exist. Moreover, the study included biologically or emotionally-related participants (e.g., twins) and emotional stimuli in an effort to maximize experimental conditions that are purportedly conducive to psi. In spite of these characteristics of the study, psi stimuli and non-psi stimuli evoked indistinguishable neuronal responses – even though differences in stimulus arousal values of the same stimuli had the expected effects on patterns of brain activation. These findings are the strongest evidence yet obtained against the existence of paranormal mental phenomena.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
We followed a neurophenomenological approach by analyzing in parallel experience and brain processes of individuals with high, medium, and low hypnotizability. Hypnotizability was measured with the original instrument in English, and we found that although there was a small decrement in comparison with the instrument administered in Swedish, the English version was both valid and reliable. We also found that women seemed to be slightly more hypnotizable than men. There was also a significant correlation between hypnotizability and emotional contagion (the propensity to behavioral and subjective imitation of somebody else’s emotion). With respect to experience and EEG activity, while the participants’ EEG was evaluated, their responses to a baseline sitting down with eyes closed and then lifting an arm was compared to the same behaviors after a hypnotic induction; their spontaneous mentation during baseline and various prompts after an induction and a suggestion to go into their “deepest” state was also measured. A between-subjects factor (level of hypnotizabity) and a within subject factor (baseline or other stages of the session) both had significant effects, as did their interaction. While the experience of low hypnotizables was characterized by “normal” mentation, that of “medium” hypnotizables was centered more on vestibular and other bodily sensations, and that of “highs” was characterized by positive affect and “exceptional” mystic-like phenomena. Spectral and source location EEG analyses corroborated various patterns of brain functioning differences. Among them, there was a significant correlation between cortical activity functioning (omega complexity) and hypnotizability, and also with specific subjective experiences (imagery experiences and highly emotional and mystic-like experiences). The induction of hypnosis had a differential effect on highs and lows, whereas the former tended to have their EEG activity become more posterior, the lows exhibited the opposite effect, becoming more frontal.
