To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).

ABSTRACT:
Describes a series of four experiments which were conducted to test the theory of psychopraxia. The thesis is an investigation of the theory from the perspective of paranormal phenomena only. It is argued that the theory of psychopraxia is important to the field of parapsychology because it offers (a) a philosophical critique on taken-for-granted assumptions about the nature of the paranormal, (b) relatively unambiguous terminology, and (c) a process-oriented approach to investigations of the paranormal by concentrating on conditions deemed necessary in bringing about paranormal effects. The thesis concludes that, in its current form, the psychopraxia model needs clarification of its most crucial concepts ("self", "pro-attitude" and "necessary conditions") before it can be regarded as a workable theory.

A computerized symbol-identifying experiment was conducted to test Thalbourne’s (2004) concept of the ‘‘pro attitude’’ (an attitude towards a favorable outcome in a normal or paranormal task). Participants were required to identify the correct symbols randomly presented on computer in a run of 50 trials. Skeptics were given a second run. After each run, hit-rates were presented on screen. A subgroup of randomly selected skeptics were informed that scores, if sufficiently high or low, indicate statistical evidence of psi. It was hypothesized that news of this information (the ‘‘treatment’’) would alter the pro attitude of some skeptics and lead them to try to score at chance, rather than risk producing scores that might indicate psi. A significant correlation between hitrate and belief in psi after treatment (but not before treatment) was found for ‘‘converted’’ skeptics (i.e., ‘‘new believers’’ in psi). Post hoc evidence showed a significantly high hit-rate on symbol identification after conversion (but not before conversion). These results suggest a ‘‘conversion effect’’ in some skeptics, thus indicating a change in pro attitude. It was concluded that further research on the pro attitude is warranted since evidence of same may help identify sources of paranormal effects.

In the present study, evidence was sought for the presence of compliant and noncompliant pro attitudes in a forced-choice cardidentifying experiment. The pro attitude is an orientation of the self towards a specific and preferred paranormal outcome or goal (Thalbourne, in press). The experiment was designed to encourage participants to adopt a pro attitude towards only one of two card outcomes (spade-hitting or club-hitting). This protocol would yield evidence in the form of psi effects that indicated by inference that participants
either acted with compliance (they followed the experimenter’s instructions) or noncompliance (they did not follow the experimenter’s instructions). The modifying effects of three attitudes/dispositions on paranormal performance were also investigated – (i) attitudes towards gambling, (ii) belief in good luck, and (iii) intuition. High scores on the above-mentioned attitudes/dispositions were hypothesised as being conducive to, and necessary for psi. There was (i) a significant negative relationship between the compliant psi outcome
(i.e., spade-hitting) and the noncompliant psi outcome (i.e., club-hitting), and (ii) a negative relationship between club-hitting and attitude toward horse racing. There was post hoc evidence of significant relationships between psi and Intuiting (introverted and extraverted) for moderate scorers on the Gambling Attitude Scales (using aggregate scores), and evidence of a replicated forced-choice psi effect.

A series of four parapsychological experiments were conducted to test Thalbourne’s (2002) theory of psychopraxia. (1) The I Ching Experiment: Evidence was found that the I Ching (an ancient Chinese form of divination) may involve a paranormal component not explainable exclusively as either ESP or PK, and therefore more preferably referred to as exosomatic psychopraxia (i.e., the psychopractic function working outside the mind/body complex). (2) The Gambling Experiment: A significant negative relationship was found between outcomes on two paranormal tasks, suggesting that ‘compliant’ and ‘noncompliant’ pro attitudes are incompatible (the pro attitude is an orientation of the self towards a specific and preferred outcome or goal). (3) The Skeptics Experiment: So-called 'converted' skeptics produced psi-hitting after conversion to belief in psi, suggesting that the pro attitude is mutable. (4) The Vision-Impaired Experiment: No evidence was found that the vision-impaired had a compensatory advantage over sighted participants in a free-response task. There was suggestive evidence that the totally blind performed better than all other participants.
Some ‘necessary conditions’ were found, which ostensibly facilitate psychopraxia, including high scoring on four 16PF personality factors, and scoring high on transliminality (the tendency to experience psychological material coming into, and going out of consciousness). The theory of psychopraxia is important to the field of parapsychology because it offers (i) a philosophical critique on taken-for-granted assumptions about the nature of the paranormal, (ii) relatively unambiguous terminology, and (iii) a process-oriented approach to investigations of the paranormal.
