Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
This study presents the results of an indirect replication of the studies by Byrd (1988) and Harris et al. (1999) that suggested that intercessory prayer had a positive influence on the evolution of clinical outcomes of coronary heart disease patients. A measure of patients’ religious/spiritual concerns, practice and beliefs was added.
We attempted to contribute to this body of research, by studying: a) the effects of distant intercessory prayer by others on the evolution of clinical outcomes of coronary by-pass surgical patients and b) the association between the patients' spiritual and religious concerns (including the practice of personal prayer) and the evolution of the patients’ own clinical outcome.
A total of 74 surgical coronary by-pass patients participated in this study. The patients were randomly assigned to two groups, prayed for group and not prayed group by an external experimenter. All patients suffered from coronary artery disease and had clinical indication for bypass surgery. Thirteen intercessors were recruited from two organised prayer groups. All intercessors committed themselves to, at least, one daily prayer period of individual prayer for "the improvement of patient's X health condition". Participants, doctors and experimenter in the Cardio-Thoracic Surgical Ward were kept blind to the assignment to either one of the groups during the length of the trial.
The results suggest that there were no significant differences between the prayed for and not prayed for groups on the evolution of clinical outcomes. Also, there seems to be no association between patients' scores on a scale of religiosity/spirituality and clinical outcomes.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Meta-analysis is now the accepted procedure for summarizing research literatures in areas of applied psychology. Because of the bias for publishing statistically significant findings, while usually rejecting nonsignificant results, our research literatures yield misleading answers to important quantitative questions (e.g., How much better is the average psychotherapy patient relative to a comparable group of untreated controls? How much more aggressive are children who watch a great deal of violent TV than children who watch little or no violence on TV?). While all such research literatures provide overly optimistic meta-analytic estimates, exactly how practically important are these overestimates? Three studies testing the literature on implementation intentions finds only slightly elevated effectiveness estimates. Conversely, in three studies another growing research literature (the efficacy of remote intercessory prayer) is found to be misleading and is in all likelihood not a real effect (i.e., our three studies suggest the literature likely consists of Type I errors). Rules of thumb to predict which research literatures are likely invalid are offered. Finally, revised publication and data analysis procedures to generate unbiased research literatures in the future are examined.

Absorption and spiritual experience: A review of evidence and potential mechanisms

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Some people seem to have a ‘talent’ for spiritual experience: they readily sense the presence of supernatural beings, receive special messages from God, and report intense feelings of self-transcendence, awe and wonder. Here we review converging strands of evidence to argue that the trait of 'absorption' captures a general proclivity for having spiritual experiences. Participants scoring highly on the Tellegen Absorption Scale report vivid experiences of hearing God's voice during prayer, intense mystical experiences in response to psychedelics or placebo brain-stimulation, and strong feelings of presence and transcendence when confronted with natural beauty, virtual reality, or music. Several mechanisms may help to explain the relationship between absorption and spiritual experience. We suggest that absorption captures an experiential mindset that intensifies inner and outer sensory experience in ways that reflect both prior expectation and novel sensory engagement. It seems to enable that which must be imagined to feel more real.

Final report - COping with PAin through Hypnosis, mindfulness and Spirituality (COPAHS)

Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND
Hypnosis (H), mindfulness (M), and as prayer (P) are useful practices in adults with chronic pain. Though, their effects are only moderate, due to interindividual variability in baseline individual characteristics. Their effects on acute pain are less studied, and H, M and P have not yet been compared in head-to-head studies.
AIMS
Examined: the effects of short audio-guided H, M, and P, relative to a control (CN) on Cold Pressor Arm Wrap (CPAW) outcomes, in healthy adults; and the moderators of H, M, and P effects on outcomes.
METHOD
Participants (N= 224) completed a baseline assessment (T0) of potential moderators and of heart rate variability (HRV) and underwent a pre-test (T1) and a post-test (T2) CPAW trial. Outcomes were assessed at T1 and T2. Audio-guided practice of H, MM, or P occurred after T1. The CN group listened to a reading from a natural history book.
RESULTS
Interactions for all outcomes were not significant. Time and gender main effects were found for pain intensity and pain tolerance. A time main effect was found for HRV. Pain intensity: At T2, differences between H and M, P, and CN were small; H group reported lower pain intensity; H and M reported small decreases. Pain tolerance: At T2, differences between H, M and P were small, and between H and CN were medium; CN showed lower tolerance than P and MM conditions; H and M groups reported, respectively, medium and small increases. Significant moderators were: religion, religiosity, spirituality hypnotic suggestibility.
CONCLUSIONS
A single H and M short session might be useful for pain (self-)management. H is more useful for Christians with high hypnotic suggestibility. M is more useful for spiritual and religious individuals, regardless of religion.
