History:	The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research. The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology. To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665). Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world. Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results:	RESULTS: The overall aim of this study was to investigate the influence of serotonin and dopamine receptor gene polymorphisms on various parameters relevant to the successful participation of obese people taking part in a diet and exercise obesity intervention. We demonstrated that serotonin receptor gene genotype has a significant influence on perception of hunger. We also showed that dopamine receptor gene polymorphisms significantly influence the drop out rate from an obesity intervention study, and suggest that this is due to the influence of these polymorphisms both on motivation to exercise and on restrained eating behaviours. Finally we demonstrated the efficacy of motivational interviewing in an obesity intervention programme and have shown that motivational interviews influence the relationship between measures of motivation or eating behaviours and weight loss measured by BMI change These novel findings indicate that serotonin plays a key role in determining appetite. They also indicate that extent of dopamine signalling may influence an individual's motivation to engage in weight-loss programmes. Further studies are required to confirm these findings and investigate the underlying mechanisms involved.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVES: To determine whether polymorphisms in serotonin or dopamine receptor genes influence changes in body mass index (BMI) or waist/hip ratio in participants of a diet and exercise programme, the extent of motivation of the participants in relation to exercise, and the participants eating behaviour scores. METHODS: 100 obese participants of a 12-week exercise and diet intervention programme took part in the study. BMI and waist/hip ratio data were collected. The Three-factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ) was used to quantify eating behaviours, and the BREQ-2 questionnaire to quantify motivation in relation to exercise. Measures and questionnaires were repeated at the end of the programme. DNA was extracted from a buccal swab and genotyped for polymorphisms in serotonin and dopamine receptor genes. RESULTS: The results indicate that polymorphisms in serotonin receptor genes influence BMI and waist/hip ratio changes in the participants. Subjects with favourable combinations of serotonin receptor genotypes were more likely to reduce their BMI waist/hip ratio than subjects with the opposing genotypes. In addition dopamine receptor genotype influences the motivation of the participants to engage in exercise. Subjects with unfavourable genotypes were less likely to have improved their motivation score measured by the BREQ-2 questionnaire by the end of the study than those participants with a favourable genotype. Finally, both serotonin and dopamine receptor genotypes influence the subjects’ eating behaviour. Subjects with combinations of unfavourable genotypes were more likely to have eating behaviours known to be associated with weight gain compared to subjects with more favourable genotype combinations. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that success when attempting to lose weight is influenced by polymorphisms in serotonin and dopamine receptor genes. This influence is mediated by the effect of these genes on eating behaviours and on motivation to participate in exercise. Further studies are required to investigate ways of personalising diet and exercise programmes to take into account the influence of these genetic factors.

Abstract/Results:	RESULTS: Meditation can be described as a special way to pay attention on a continuous moment to moment basis. Research has shown that meditation techniques are able to enhance attentional capacities. In this study we took a closer look at this relationship between meditation and attention. At first we developed three different assessment tools for the description of a medition practice without referring to any esoteric or religious aspects. A scale assessing the motivation of meditators was developed by the psychometric assessment of 550 meditators. Here a psychometric valid, highly reliable scale with a stable four factor structure could be developed. Regarding meditation practice it was necessary to differentiate between different types of attention cultivated in different meditation styles. The main dimension here was the difference between a narrow focused attention and a wide and open form of attention. This difference was assessed with several visual analog scales. Regarding the human attentional network three distinct systems of attention (alerting, orienting and executive control) are known. We recruited 25 long-term meditators and 25 sex and age matched controls. They were tested for their performance in each of the three networks by the attention network test (ANT) while EEG was measured to assess event related potentials (ERP) in relation to the ANT stimuli. We could demonstrate that meditators had a significant better performance on the executive component of the ANT (p<.05). There was no difference for the two other networks. Meditators practicing meditation with a narrow focus of attention showed a better performance in the executive control function of the ANT (r = .34) but the correlation failed to reach significance.

Abstract/Results:	RESULTS: The aim of this project was to understand the interaction between motivations to go on pilgrimage, spiritual behaviours and experiences, and psychological outcomes. Four hundred and fifty pilgrims to the Roman Catholic sites of Fátima, Lourdes, the Pagan site of Stonehenge, and the New Age town of Glastonbury were asked to fill in a questionnaire. This included standardized measures of positive and negative affect (PANAS), personality (EPQ), magical/paranormal ideation, religious belief/experience, and motivations to go on pilgrimage. Spiritual Growth and Community/Care were the major motivational dimensions for pilgrims at both Christian sites, while Pagan pilgrims scored highest on Cosmic/Nature Closeness and Sensation Seeking motivations. Results for Positive and Negative Affect showed that Christian pilgrims were significantly higher on positive affect than Pagan pilgrims, while Pagan pilgrims scored significantly higher on negative affect. Pagan pilgrims also had significantly higher scores on magical/paranormal ideation and spiritual experiences. We suggest that Pagan rituals elicit higher arousal than Christian ones, and are less supported by a social and belief structure. This makes Pagan pilgrims more likely to experience negative affect (e.g. fear) and a higher frequency of unusual experiences. The higher frequency on unusual experiences is also partially explained by a schizotypal personality disposition and a tendency to process information in an intuitive way.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: The aim of this project was to understand the interaction between motivations to go on pilgrimage, religious behaviours and experiences, and psychological outcomes. We were also interested in looking at sacred spaces and individuals affiliated with contrasting types of religiosity. Various European sites were selected according to their representativeness of traditional Christianity and Paganism. Four hundred and fifty pilgrims to the Roman Catholic sites of Fátima, Lourdes, the Pagan site of Stonehenge, and the New Age town of Glastonbury were asked to fill in a questionnaire. This included standardized measures of positive and negative affect (PANAS), personality (EPQ), magical/paranormal ideation, as well as measures of religious belief/experience and activities, a newly developed scale on motivations to pilgrimage, and a qualitative section. Longitudinal data was collected using a reduced version of the questionnaire 8 to 12 weeks after the respective pilgrimage. Spiritual Growth and Community/Care were the major motivational dimensions for pilgrims at both Christian sites, while Pagan pilgrims scored highest on Cosmic/Nature Closeness and Sensation Seeking motivations. Results for Positive and Negative Affect showed that Christian pilgrims were significantly higher on positive affect than Pagan pilgrims, while Pagan pilgrims scored significantly higher on negative affect. Items asking about physical illness and mental health problems presented no significant differences between groups, so these differences in affect may be attributed to the characteristics of the pilgrimage (e.g. the ritual activities) and the motivations to be a pilgrim, instead of base individual differences. Pagan pilgrims also had significantly higher scores on magical/paranormal ideation and spiritual experiences. These results are approached within a broad framework highlighting the behavioural and social-cognitive differences between Pagan and Christian belief systems. Specifically, we suggest that Pagan rituals elicit higher arousal than Christian ones, and are less supported by a social and belief structure. This makes Pagan pilgrims more likely to experience negative affect (e.g. fear) and a higher frequency of unusual experiences. Historical evidence from Classical Paganism is drawn upon to support these conclusions. Some of these results have been presented at two international conferences. Four papers are about to be submitted to various journals and a monograph proposal is under preparation.

Selective attention is the psychological mechanism at the heart of an immersive experience. It is also known that selective attention may play an important role during the perception of pain, there is evidence that distraction from painful stimuli can increase pain tolerance. This convergence has led to a line of research where immersion in virtual tasks (e.g. computer games) is utilized for therapeutic purposes and pain relief. The first experiment adopted an Evoked Response Potential (ERP) methodology based on the auditory oddball paradigm. We developed a methodology where participants played a computer game whilst being exposed to a series of tones that were irrelevant to the game. Our participants were exposed to the oddball paradigm during several game conditions. The degree of demand experienced by participants was manipulated to yield easy, hard and impossible levels of difficulty. Participants experienced these three levels of difficulty on three display types: a small 5” display, a large TV display and a Head-Mounted Display (HMD. Our findings revealed that immersion was highest during hard/impossible levels of demand that increased the intrinsic motivation of the participant. However, we found no effect of display type on immersion. Our second experiment focused on the motivational aspects of immersion and we once again exposed our participants to easy, hard and impossible levels of demand. Instead of using an auditory oddball task to capture ERP modulation, participants were exposed to repeated painful stimuli based on contact heat applied to the forearm. The aim of this experiment was to investigate whether ERP responses to painful stimuli were modulated by the level of game demand. This experiment failed to reveal any statistically significant findings and there were a number of methodological issues that may have been responsible for this null finding.

Title:	Why are people meditating? The Meditation Motivation Scale

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVES: Meditation origins from religious traditions in the ancient East. In our modern western society the practice of meditation grew very popular in recent years. This may be due to secular or non-secular reasons. The motivation to practice meditation may range from intentions like well-being and health related issues up to the concept of self-transformation by following a spiritual path. Since it can be assumed that the motivation for a meditation practice is strongly related to the outcome we decided to construct a questionnaire assessing motives for meditation. METHODS: A large range of meditators was asked for their motivations to meditate. Based on their answers we constructed a 58 item scale in German offering a large range of motivations. All items had to be rated on 5 point scale. 549 meditators filled in the scale online. We performed a psychometric assessment. 27 items were discarded because of low variance, low discriminatory power, skewed distributions or loadings on multiple factors. We performed an exploratory factor analysis (Varimax) with orthogonal scale rotation. RESULTS: The final scale has 31 items and explains a total of 55.3 % of variance with a internal consistency of Cronbach’s a = .90. Motivations could be grouped into four distinct factors: 1. Wellbeing and Relaxation (9 Items, a=.90, 17.6% variance), 2. Regulation of Emotions (9 Items, a = .89, 14.3 % variance), 3. Self-exploration (7 Items, a = .85, 12.5 % variance), 4. Self-transformation (6 Items, a = .81, 11.0 % variance). CONCLUSION: The newly constructed Meditation Motivation Scale is suitable to assess motivations for the practice of meditation with high reliability. A clear-cut four factor structure emerged from the data of our sample demonstrating that secular and various non-secular motivations can be clearly separated.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: The motivation to practice meditation may range from intentions like well-being and health related issues up to the concept of self-transformation by following a spiritual path. We constructed a questionnaire assessing motives for meditation. At first a 58-item scale was constructed. 549 meditators filled in the scale online. Psychometric assessment was performed and 27 items were discarded because of low variance, low discriminatory power, skewed distributions or loadings on multiple factors. The final scale has 31 items and explains a total of 55.3 % of variance with an internal consistency of 61=.90. An exploratory factor analysis with orthogonal scale rotation yielded four distinct factors: Wellbeing and Relaxation, Regulation of Emotions, Self-exploration, Self-transformation. We conclude that the Meditation Motivation Scale is suitable to assess motivations for the practice of meditation with high reliability. A clear-cut four factor structure emerged demonstrating that secular and various non-secular motivations can be clearly separated.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND/AIM The aim of this work was to investigate the motivational intensity model (MIM) using measures of brain activation. The MIM has been extensively explored using cardiovascular psychophysiology, however the activation of the prefrontal cortex has not been explored in this particular paradigm. The aim of this study was to investigate how cognitive demand in response to working memory load affected activation of the rostral prefrontal cortex (rPFC) under two conditions: (a) control (no reward) and (b) financial reward. It was hypothesised that the presence of reward would enhance rPFC activation but only when cognitive demand was high. METHODS 40 participants (20 males) volunteered for the mixed-design study where reward group served as a between-participants factor. Cognitive demand was varied by exposing participants to a working memory task (nback) at five levels of difficulty, e.g. 0-back, 1-back, 3-back, 5-back, 7-back. Demand was estimated to be easy (0-back, 1-back), hard (3-back, 5-back) or impossible (7-back). All participants were paid £10 for taking part in the study, but half of the participants were offered an additional monetary reward of £10 that was linked to their performance on the task. Blood oxygenation in the rPFC was captured using a functional near-infrared spectrography (fNIRS) device that covered the forehead region of the participant and monitored BA10. RESULTS The results of the study indicated that blood oxygenation in the rPFC was generally higher in the presence of reward. It was also apparent that activation of the rPFC peaked at the 3-back task for participants in the control group, whereas this peak was observed at the 5-back for participants in the reward group. CONCLUSIONS The rPFC responded to both cognitive demand and the presence of a reward. This effect was consistent with the MIM where the level of effort invested into a task is influenced by the likelihood of success and the presence of an extrinsic reward.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Ventral tegmental area (VTA) activity is critical for reward/reinforcement and is tightly modulated by the laterodorsal tegmentum (LDT). In utero exposure to glucocorticoids (iuGC) triggers prominent motivation deficits but nothing is known about the impact of this exposure in the LDT-VTA circuit. We show that iuGC-rats have long-lasting changes in cholinergic markers in the LDT, together with a decrease in LDT basal neuronal activity. Interestingly, upon LDT stimulation, iuGC animals present a decrease in the magnitude of excitation and an increase in VTA inhibition, as a result of a shift in the type of cells that respond to the stimulus. In agreement with LDT-VTA dysfunction, we show that iuGC animals present motivational deficits that are rescued by selective optogenetic activation of this pathway. Importantly, we also show that LDT-VTA optogenetic stimulation is reinforcing, and that iuGC animals are more susceptible to the reinforcing properties of LDT-VTA stimulation.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: The nucleus accumbens (NAc) plays a central role in reinforcement and motivation. Around 95% of the NAc neurons are medium spiny neurons (MSNs), divided into those expressing dopamine receptor D1 (D1R) or dopamine receptor D2 (D2R). Optogenetic activation of D2-MSNs increased motivation, whereas inhibition of these neurons produced the opposite effect. Yet, it is still unclear how activation of D2-MSNs affects other local neurons/interneurons or input terminals and how this contributes for motivation enhancement. To answer this question, in this work we combined optogenetic modulation of D2-MSNs with in loco pharmacological delivery of specific neurotransmitter antagonists in rats. First, we showed that optogenetic activation of D2-MSNs increases motivation in a progressive ratio (PR) task. We demonstrated that this behavioral effect relies on cholinergic-dependent modulation of dopaminergic signalling of ventral tegmental area (VTA) terminals, which requires D1R and D2R signalling in the NAc. D2-MSN optogenetic activation decreased ventral pallidum (VP) activity, reducing the inhibitory tone to VTA, leading to increased dopaminergic activity. Importantly, optogenetic activation of D2-MSN terminals in the VP was sufficient to recapitulate the motivation enhancement. In summary, our data suggests that optogenetic stimulation of NAc D2-MSNs indirectly modulates VTA dopaminergic activity, contributing for increased motivation. Moreover, both types of dopamine receptors signalling in the NAc are required in order to produce the positive behavioral effects.

Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world. Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Title:	Atheists on the Santiago way: Examining motivations to go on pilgrimage

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: In the past 30 years, the camino to Santiago de Compostela has been recreated as an eclectic pilgrimage, open to both religious and atheist travelers. Following previous work on motivational orientations and religion, we conducted a study examining atheist versus religious pilgrims’ motivations to walk the Santiago way. We assessed pilgrims (N = 360) at various parts of the northern Spanish camino using a questionnaire that measured motivations to go on pilgrimage. In addition, we measured levels of positive and negative affect, physical exertion, and emotional problems. Atheists scored significantly lower on community and religious types of motivations. However, in several measures no differences were found between groups. We suggest that both atheist and religious pilgrims are exploring forms of horizontal and vertical transcendence characterized by a desire to connect to nature and one’s deeper self.

History:	The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Previous research has demonstrated changes in neurovascular activation of the prefrontal cortex to increased working memory load. The primary purpose of the current paper was to investigate overload of working memory capacity using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) within the framework of motivational intensity theory. A secondary goal was to explore the influence of the correlation-based signal improvement (CBSI) as a method for correcting the influence of systemic variables. In study one, 30 participants (15 female, mean age = 21.09 years, s.d. = 2.9 years) performed a verbal version of the n-back working memory task under four levels of demand (easy, hard, very hard, and impossible). In contrast to the raw data, CBSI-transformed fNIRS data indicated that neurovascular coupling was highest at hard demand when the task was challenging but success was possible. The second study (N??=??30; 15 female, mean age = 22.4 years, s.d. = 5.3) replicated the working memory manipulation with the addition of low versus high levels of financial reward. Analyses of CBSI-transformed levels of oxygenated (HbO) and deoxygenated (HHb) hemoglobin replicated the first study at right lateral regions of the prefrontal cortex (BA46). HHb_CBSI data were significantly reduced at impossible demand for participants receiving the higher level of financial reward. The study is the first to support predictions from the motivational intensity model using neurovascular data. In addition, the application of CBSI to fNIRS data was found to improve the sensitivity of HbO and Hbb to the independent variables.
