ABSTRACT:
Do you believe in ghosts? Chances are you're either too willing, or not willing enough, to believe that personal consciousness survives after bodily death. Some underestimate the evidence for life after death, not realizing how impressive the most convincing cases are. Others overestimate it, rejecting alternative explanations too readily. In fact, several non-survivalist explanations-hidden or latent linguistic or artistic talents, extreme memory, even psychic abilities--are as interesting as the hypothesis of survival, and may be more plausible than their critics realize. Immortal Remains takes a fresh look at some of the most puzzling cases suggesting life after death, and considers how to tell evidence for an afterlife from evidence for exotic things (including psychic things) done by the living. Author Stephen E. Braude, who has done extensive research in parapsychology and dissociation, explores previously ignored issues about dissociation, creativity, linguistic skills, and the nature and limits of human abilities. He concludes that we have some reason, finally, for believing in life after death.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This study reviews observational studies regarding alleged past-life memories published as scientific articles, and points out their bibliometric and methodological characteristics. Scientific databases were screened (Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed/Medline, PsycINFO, Scielo, and OpenGrey). The 78 included studies were classified by their methodological and bibliometric characteristics. The peak of publications occurred from 1990 to 2010 (45%), and Asia was the most investigated territory (58 studies); most of investigations were related to children (84%) and case report was the predominant study design (60%). Interview was the predominant methodological approach (73%), followed by documental analysis (50%). Claimed past-life memories (100%), unusual behaviors (74%) and birthmarks/defects (37%) were the most investigated variables. Investigations of past-life memories should be encouraged around all cultures, and future studies should consider previous methodological features and try to overcome their limitations.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Objective: Academic investigation of thousands of children who claim past-life memories has been developed worldwide for five decades. However, despite the scientific and clinical significance of this substantial body of research, most clinicians and scientists are not aware of it. This study aims to report a case of a child who claimed memories that match his deceased granduncle's life and to perform a literature review of the main characteristics and implications of children's past-life claims. Method: We investigated the case through interviews with the child and first-hand witnesses, and conducted a documental analysis to verify possible associations between the child's statements and facts from the deceased's life. We also performed a CT scan of the child's skull to verify possible associations between anatomical features and a fatal wound from the alleged previous life. Results: The child presented most key features typical of such cases of claimed past-life memories. He made 13 statements about the previous life; nine were correct (e.g., the mode of death and a toy the granduncle had) and four were undetermined. The child demonstrated eight unusual behaviors that matched the previous personalitys habits, interests, and manners. The child has a birth defect (a rare occipital concavity) that is compatible with the firearm injury that caused the death of his uncle. Conclusions: The characteristics of the reported case fit the cross-cultural patterns of children who claim past-life memories, and it has scientific and clinical implications that need to be better known and investigated.

ABSTRACT:
Background
Academic investigation of claimed past-life memories (CPLM) has been developed since the 1960s. More than 2500 cases known as Cases of the Reincarnation Type (CORT) have been verified by researchers at University of Virginia (USA). Despite the relevance and the significant amount of cases, little is known about the impact of PLM on claimers and adult cases.
Aims
To investigate the profile of Brazilian CORT; the accuracy of children's CPLM; and the associations between reports of PLM and current health, happiness, and religiosity/spirituality.
Method
Recruitment through media and events. Participants answered an online questionnaire with sociodemographic characteristics; memory features; religious/spiritual, health and happiness scales. Interviews with first-hand witnesses and children. Document analysis was performed to verify possible associations between the CPLM and facts that happened during the deceased individual's life. Bardin’s content analysis of the reported PLM was performed. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was performed.
Results
N = 426, 94% adults, 6% children/adolescents. Most children are male (62%) and adults, female (79%). Spontaneous memories occurred in 82.4% of adults and 92% of children. Typical CORT features were present in adults and child samples: birthmarks (54%, 29%); skills not learned (48%, 33%); phobia (71%, 17%); philia (30%, 21%). Among adults, philia and phobia predicted higher levels of mental disorders.
Conclusions
This first national CORT survey found that adult cases have many similarities with children’s and the persistence of memories in adulthood may be associated with mental health issues. Our findings may contribute to improved mental health care and future studies.
