Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Hallucinations have been found associated with false detection or false recognition of acoustic/verbal material in several studies. We investigated whether they were also linked with false recognition of pictures. Furthermore, an association between hallucinations and deficits in remembering temporal, context was observed in previous research on schizophrenia. We investigated whether the association extends to deficits in remembering spatial context. Forty-one patients with schizophrenia underwent a visual memory task. Sixteen mixed black-and-white and colored pictures were presented at different locations. Participants had to recognize the pictures among distractors, then to recall the spatial context of the presentation of the target pictures. Results showed that auditory hallucinations were associated with poor recognition of the colored pictures. When recognition efficiency and negative symptoms were statistically controlled, auditory hallucinations were also associated with increased response bias toward false recognition of nontarget pictures, and with errors in remembering the spatial context. No associations with visual hallucinations emerged. Anhedonia was associated with response bias, in the direction opposite to that of hallucinations. In conclusion, the association between hallucinations and response bias extends across modalities to picture recognition. The association between hallucinations and temporal context impairment extends to spatial context.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Previous work has suggested that decrement in both processing speed and working memory span plays a role in the memory impairment observed in patients with schizophrenia. We undertook a study to examine simultaneously the effect of these two factors. A sample of 49 patients with schizophrenia and 43 healthy controls underwent a battery of verbal and visual memory tasks. Superficial and deep encoding memory measures were tallied. We conducted regression analyses on the various memory measures, using processing speed and working memory span as independent variables. In the patient group, processing speed was a significant predictor of superficial and deep memory measures in verbal and visual memory. Working memory span was an additional significant predictor of the deep memory measures only. Regression analyses involving all participants revealed that the effect of diagnosis on all the deep encoding memory measures was reduced to non-significance when processing speed was entered in the regression. Decreased processing speed is involved in verbal and visual memory deficit in patients, whether the task require superficial or deep encoding. Working memory is involved only insofar as the task requires a certain amount of effort.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Six new and ecologically related laboratory-controlled perceptual-motor tasks were used to explore the capacity to learn and retain perceptual-motor skills in patients with focal brain damage. Five tasks were applied in the investigation of the putative involvement of the basal ganglia in skill learning, which was inferred from the performance of 16 patients with damage in the basal ganglia. The patients showed reduced skill learning. However, the impairment was not generalized to all tasks. The sixth task was used to examine the performance of patients with focal damage in the medial temporal area (N=5), the basal ganglia (N=7), the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (N=5), and other brain areas (N=25). As expected patients with damage in the medial temporal area or other brain areas showed normal learning of the skill, whereas patients with dorsolateral prefrontal cortex damage showed impaired learning. The results from the basal ganglia subjects did not confirm the initial hypothesis of reduced learning of the skill. This task was also used to record the eye-movement behavior of 33 healthy subjects during the performance of the task. As expected the subjects’ saccadic behavior changed during practice of the task and acquisition of the skill. The findings of these studies have important implications in the understanding of perceptual-motor skill learning as a multi-dimensional process and in the identification of the neuropsychological mechanisms underlying skill learning.

Increased parahippocampal delta activity characterises virtual navigation and REM sleep in humans

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Hippocampal theta or rhythmic slow activity (RSA) occurring during exploratory behaviours and rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep is a characteristic and salient oscillatory rhythm in animals. By contrast, much controversy exists regarding the existence and the characteristics of this activity in humans. Some studies argued that human hippocampal theta activity appears in short and phasic bursts. On the contrary, earlier we showed that REM-dependent RSA recorded from the parahippocampal region is continuous like in animals but instead of the theta it falls in the delta frequency range. Here, we examined parahippocampal activity in 10 epilepsy patients implanted with foramen ovale electrodes while they were engaged in a virtual navigation task. Navigation was tested according to three conditions: an acquisition, a recall and a non-learning route-following condition. Recordings were also sampled from resting and REM sleep. For analyses, spectral power densities (SPD) were calculated for each 1 Hz wide frequency bin up to 10 Hz. During acquisition, SPD significantly increased in the 1 Hz, 2 Hz and the 3 Hz frequency bins when compared with resting. A similar but more robust increase was present in the 1 Hz, 2 Hz, 3 Hz, 4 Hz and 5 Hz frequency bins during REM sleep. Thus, increase was present in similar frequencies during the two conditions and these frequency ranges were below the traditional theta band. At the same time, other features of this activity, such as state-dependency and tonicity made this activity comparable to that seen in animals and suggest this activity to be the human analogue hippocampal theta in animals.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The performance of developing zebrafish in both classical and operant conditioning assays was tested with a particular focus on the emergence of these learning behaviors during development. Strategically positioned visual cues paired with electroshocks were used in two fully automated assays to investigate both learning paradigms. These allow the evaluation of the behavioral performance of zebrafish continuously throughout development, from larva to adult. We found that learning improves throughout development, starts reliably around week 3, and reaches adult performance levels at week 6. Adult fish quickly learned to perform perfectly, and the expression of the learned behavior is manifestly controlled by vision. The memory is behaviorally expressed in adults for at least 6 h and retrievable for at least 12 h.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
INTRODUCTION:
It is a well established observation that plane inversion causes deterioration of performance in face discrimination tasks – the so-called face inversion effect (FIE). This phenomenon suggests that the human visual system contains specialized processing mechanisms that are more engaged by upright faces than by inverted faces or non-face objects. One prominent hypothesis proposes that such specialization results from
extensive practice with upright faces, leading to expertise for this canonical orientation. Here, we aimed to investigate perceptual learning for faces presented in multiple orientations, by conducting both psychophysics and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments.
METHODS:
We conducted two psychophysics experiments in which participants performed a same / different discrimination task (DT) on pairs of faces: for orientations ranging between 0 and 300° over one session (Experiment 1) and for a single orientation over four training sessions (Experiment 2). We then conducted an fMRI experiment to investigate the neural correlates of face perception at multiple orientations.
RESULTS:
A quadratic effect was observed across orientations for both reaction times and error rates, indicating a deterioration of performance away from 0° and towards 180°. In Experiment 2, we observed a main effect of session, indicating that participants became significantly faster and more accurate with training. Finally, when tested with a different orientation (240°) at the end of the last session, participants showed a similar
performance compared with the trained orientation (120°), suggesting that transfer of learning across orientations took place.
CONCLUSIONS:
In summary, we have showed a consistent effect of face orientation in both behavioural and neuroimaging results. Specifically, we found that participants gave more errors and were slower in their responses as faces were rotated away from 0º. In addition, performance was improved when participants underwent periods of training, both for trained and untrained orientations. Consistently with the expertise hypothesis, we also
found a parametric modulation of fMRI activity in specialized visual brain areas, according to the quadratic behavioural effect of face orientation.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
OBJECTIVES:
The zebrafish (Danio rerio) has been an excellent vertebrate model for genetic analysis of early development and has also been used to study aspects of neural development and function. It is known that fish exhibit a wide range of learning behaviors but it is not clear at what point during development they begin nor have these behaviors been analyzed systematically. Before moving on to in vivo 2-photon imaging of neural circuitry, we are answering questions related to the ontogenesis of the learning and memory behaviors we assay for – When do animals start learning and how does that correlate to their developmental biology and age range? How does the ability to learn correlate with it’s persistence and extinction?
METHODS:
The performance of developing zebrafish in both classical and operant conditioning assays was tested with a particular focus on the emergence of these learning behaviors during development. Strategically positioned visual cues paired with electro- shocks were used in two fully automated assays to investigate both paradigms. These allow the evaluation of the behavioral performance of zebrafish continuously throughout development, from larva to adult.
RESULTS:
We found that learning improves throughout development, starts reliably around week 3, and reaches adult performance levels at week 6. Adult fish quickly learned to perform perfectly, and the expression of the learned behavior is manifestly controlled by vision. The memory is behaviorally expressed in adults for at least 6 h and retrievable for at least 12 h.
CONCLUSIONS:
We have developed a computer-based automated behavioral assay which we can easily control and comprehensively analyze. Using this automated system we show that a strong ability to learn is already present in young juvenile fish and we further characterize the ontogenesis of learning and memory during zebrafish development.
DISCUSSION:
The transparency and small size of the larva combined with its vertebrate brain organization, is an exceptional model. The barin areas equivalent to the amygdala and hippocampus are much more exposed to manipulation and imaging than in mammals and its amenability to genetic screening and manipulation tools provide a unique experimental system to explore the psychophysiology of learning and memory in future studies.

Abstract/Results: Results:
The present study examined the behavioural and electrophysiological correlates of derived relational responding (stimulus equivalence). Participants were trained, but not tested, for the formation of 4, 3-member stimulus relations (A1-B1-C1, A2-B2-C2, A3-B3-C3, and A4-B4-C4) consisting of pseudowords, before then receiving a relatedness decision task that presented all combinations of stimulus pairs (Directly Trained (i.e., A1-B1), Symmetry (i.e., B1-A1) and Equivalence (i.e., C1-B1), as well as Between Pair directly trained (i.e., A1-B2), symmetry (i.e., B1-A2), and equivalence (i.e., C1-B2) trials. Analyses compared each of these trial-types, as well as Within and Between comparisons. Thirty-five healthy controls were recruited. Twenty-one participants passed the final matching to sample test for derived relations. Behavioural results indicated that reaction times on Equivalence trials were significantly slower than all other trials types. Directly Trained trials were marginally faster than Symmetry trials (p=.49) and Equivalence trials (p<.000); Symmetry trials were significantly faster than Equivalence trials (p<.000); and Between trials were significantly slower than Within trials (p=.01). With the EEG data, a series of repeated ANOVAs were calculated across three frequency ranges (i.e., alpha, beta, and theta). Significant results for mean amplitude were typically found in the 4 to 8 Hz (theta) range, 350 ms after target onset, whereas peak mean amplitude differences were typically found in the theta range 250 ms after target onset. Overall, equivalence trials evoked greater negativity than symmetry or directly trained trials. Further analyses are ongoing, but the present preliminary findings are supportive of a derived relations approach to the electrophysiological correlates of relational learning.
