    • The Boolean operator AND between the terms is assumed by default. If you enter the words European Union in the search box, the system returns all records in which both words occur, regardless of their order.
    • When entering a set of words in quotes, e.g "european union", all records containing the literal term "European Union" will be retrieved.
  • Search by access fields (e.g. author, title, etc.):
    • To direct your search, choose the field in which you want to search the word or expression.
    • Search in the field assumes by default the expression in quotes, e.g. European union will retrieve all records containing the literal term "European Union"
  • To perform more complex searches, additional words or expressions may be added.
  • If you want to refine the search results, you can always access the link "search" in the upper left corner of the page of search results.
  • The search engine is not case sensitive. For example, the word congress has the same meaning that Congress or CONGRESS.
  • To truncate your search expression, use the $ character
  • You can filter the results of your search by a date or date range, filling the appropriate boxes.

BIAL Foundation Archive
Start date: 1994
History:
The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Title: BIAL Grants
Start date: 1994
History:
In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Brain activity while guessing: Research by functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS)
Publication year: 2006
Abstract/Results:
SUMMARY:
There are several useful methods to examine brain functions from outside of the body. One of them is fNIRS (functional near-infrared spectroscopy) which can be used to measure only the cerebral cortex near the scalp (depth: 2-3 cm). fNIRS is non-stressful the same as EEG measurements, so it is a suitable method for sensitive subjects. The present paper deals with 3 topics using fNIRS. First, brain blood flow was measured while guessing a hidden figure in a forced-choice test Spontaneous blood flow change often occurred at the temporal lobe, and awareness was slightly more activated at that time. Second, the cognitive process for human facial expressions was researched. It is said that Japanese are expressionless or vague compared with people of other cultures. Subjects tried to distinguish emotions of vague faces made by a Japanese actress. The task was relatively easy for Japanese while it was difficult for Chinese. Third, brain blood flow of various experts was measured while they were guessing for the invalid parts of the inside of human body or for a small thing hidden in a dark box Brain activities of star psychics during clairvoyance were not similar to activities of other subjects. The characteristic activated area of star psychics was the prefrontal area although the guessing task required formulating visual images and many subjects showed activation of the right temporal lobe.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
OBJECTIVE:
This study aims to use an experimental design to investigate verbal expression of emotion in anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN).
METHOD:
Forty-two patients with AN, 26 patients with BN and 34 healthy controls (HCs) were videoed talking about discrete emotional experiences. Talks were analysed using the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count. Participants also completed the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ).
RESULTS:
People with AN used fewer words when describing their emotional experiences and fewer positive affect words than HCs. People with BN were indistinguishable from HCs. Both ED groups had higher scores on the suppression subscale of the ERQ compared with HCs. Suppression was negatively correlated with negative verbal expression.
DISCUSSION:
This study highlights differences between AN and BN in emotion expression. It supports a model of AN, which highlights emotion inhibition as a maintaining factor of the illness. Methods of emotion regulation in EDs may contribute to increased negative mood and poorer social functioning.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
OBJECTIVE:
Recent models of eating disorders (ED) have emphasised the importance of emotional avoidance and dysregulation in the maintenance of the disorders, however empirical data are limited. The objective of this study was to investigate behavioural, cognitive and psychophysiological aspects of emotional responding in EDs.
METHODS:
An amusing and a sad film clip were used to evoke emotion whilst facial expressiveness, subjective experience and skin conductance (SC) were recorded in 20 women with anorexia nervosa (AN), 14 with bulimia nervosa (BN) and 26 healthy control (HC) women.
RESULTS:
In response to the amusing film clip AN participants reported and expressed less positive emotion than BN and HC participants, however there was no difference in groups on SC reactivity. In response to the sad film clip, all three groups reported experiencing similar levels of negative emotion. AN participants were less facially expressive than BN and HC, and BN participants showed increased SC reactivity compared to HC and individuals with AN. Although the AN group demonstrated more impairments in their emotion responses, discrepancies between emotion components characterised both ED groups in response to sad stimuli.
CONCLUSION:
Using a comprehensive experimental measurement of the emotion response system our findings highlight differences in emotion responses between people with anorexia and bulima nervosa and in response to positive and negative stimuli. Inhibited negative emotion expression could play a role in increasing arousal and negative affect.
