The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.

We aimed at demonstrating that increasing the regularity in the acoustic background helps to back-propagate the encoding of its regularities upstream the auditory pathway. Specifically, we wanted to show that 1) the human auditory system was able to track stimulus repetition effects at brainstem level, only when precise timing information is available, and 2) that the beneficial effects of temporal regularity in back-propagating the encoding of the acoustic environment relies on the entrainment of neural oscillations to the rhythm of stimulation. The EEG of healthy subjects was recorded during passive listening of sounds presented at a constant or random pace. Results of experiment 1 showed that the auditory brainstem response showed repetition effects, (e.g., adapted to irrelevant information) that were stronger when stimuli occurred in regular compared to random timing. Results of experiment 2 confirmed that temporal predictability is critical to enhance regularity encoding. In fact, the span of adaptation of the N1 auditory evoked potential was larger for isochronous that for random timing. Moreover, the results disclosed a new component of the evoked potentials that is “emitted” when a stimulus is expected (as induced by its constant timing presentation) but nevertheless never occurs. Critically, we showed that this “emitted” response was related to larger Beta oscillations as a function of the Delta rhythm phase. We conclude that only when the content of stimulation is predictable, the auditory system is able to pre-activate memory traces to compare with future stimulation, and that this predictive activity is organized in time by entrained oscillations to the rhythms of the acoustic scene.

The brain is a predictive machine. Converging data suggests a diametric predictive strategy from autism spectrum disorders (ASD) to schizophrenic spectrum disorders (SSD). Whereas perceptual inference in ASD is rigidly shaped by incoming sensory information, the SSD population is prone to overestimate the precision of their priors’ models. Growing evidence considers brain oscillations pivotal biomarkers to understand how top-down predictions integrate bottom-up input. Starting from the conceptualization of ASD and SSD as oscillopathies, we introduce an integrated perspective that ascribes the maladjustments of the predictive mechanism to dysregulation of neural synchronization. According to this proposal, disturbances in the oscillatory profile do not allow the appropriate trade-off between descending predictive signal, overweighted in SSD, and ascending prediction errors, overweighted in ASD. These opposing imbalances both result in an ill-adapted reaction to external challenges. This approach offers a neuro-computational model capable of linking predictive coding theories with electrophysiological findings, aiming to increase knowledge on the neuronal foundations of the two spectra features and stimulate hypothesis-driven rehabilitation/research perspectives.

The ability to flexibly adjust one's threat predictions to meet the current environmental contingencies is crucial to survival. Nevertheless, its neural oscillatory correlates remain elusive in humans. Here, we tested whether changes in theta and alpha brain oscillations mark the updating of threat predictions and correlate with response of the peripheral nervous system. To this end, electroencephalogram and electrodermal activity were recorded in a group of healthy adults, who completed a Pavlovian threat conditioning task that included an acquisition and a reversal phase. Both theta and alpha power discriminated between threat and safety, with each frequency band showing unique patterns of modulations during acquisition and reversal. While changes in midcingulate theta power may learn the timing of an upcoming danger, alpha power may reflect the preparation of the somato-motor system. Additionally, ventromedial prefrontal cortex theta may play a role in the inhibition of previously acquired threat responses, when they are no longer appropriate. Finally, theta and alpha power correlated with skin conductance response, establishing a direct relationship between activation of the central and peripheral nervous systems. Taken together these results highlight the existence of multiple oscillatory systems that flexibly regulate their activity for the successful expression of threat responses in an ever-changing environment.

ABSTRACT:
Background
Middle adulthood – the age between 40 and 60 – is characterised by many social, emotional, and health-related changes which mirror changes in brain and cognition. However, the neuroscience of the middle age brain is quite sparse, often due to the assumption that more informative brain changes are observed while growing up or ageing. However, identifying the roots of age-related changes earlier in adulthood may allow to minimise or prevent the cognitive, psychological and well-being issues that are often serious in late life.
Aims
To generate a novel, informed, and detailed profile of the middle-aged brain by studying the correlational and causal links between brain, cognitive functions, and well-being.
Method
A continuous measure of working memory performance as well as the source of errors typically affecting working memory was obtained in 179 adults across the life span (58 middle agers), in addition to information on well-being and cognitive reserve - a proxy for cognitive proficiency. In the same sample, data on parietal brain stimulation (tACS) in alpha, gamma, beta frequency or sham coupled with either the continuous working memory task or with a measure of time processing were also obtained. Electrophysiological (EEG) data were also collected, and analysed to identify resting state spectral power and the duration of burst events.
Results
Memory performance declined linearly with age, whereas changes in error rate peaked in middle age. At a physiological level, posterior alpha power – typically related to memory performance – as well as the ratio of long bursts within the upper alpha band changed linearly with age. In contrast, sensorimotor beta power and burst rate properties varied primarily non-linearly, with extrema during middle age. Hence, the initial increase in beta power and bursts during youth slowed in middle age reaching its maximum around the age of 60, and slowly decreased in older age. In parallel, memory performance following tACS to the posterior parietal regions changed non-linearly and was stimulation specific: there was a gamma-related working memory improvement in younger adults, a similar but alpha-related improvement in ageing participants, and a significant decline in middle agers following alpha-tACS. Time processing was instead specifically modulated by beta oscillations. Complementing these results, well-being indexes, and especially stress, were higher in middle agers and significantly reduced in those with higher cognitive reserve.
Conclusions
Ageing is characterized by distinct cognitive and well-being underlying patterns as well as different spatial and temporal brain dynamics, some critically arising or changing in middle age.
