The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.

Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Introduction. Considerable interest has been, and still is, generated by the potential performance enhancing benefits of alpha neurofeedback training (NFT) for healthy participants. A plausible rationale for such training, with an aim to improve mood and/or enhance cognition, can be made based upon what is already known of the links between alpha EEG activity and behavior. However, designing an optimal NFT paradigm remains difficult because a number of methodological factors that may influence the outcome of such training remain largely unexplored.
Method. This article focuses on these methodological factors in an attempt to highlight some of the unanswered questions and stimulate future research.
Results. Specifically, this article examines the NFT training schedule; the variety, basis, and setting of reward thresholds; the nature and modality of the feedback signal provided; unidirectional as compared to bidirectional NFT; the establishment of a target frequency range for alpha; whether NFT should be conducted with eyes open or closed; and the identification of a clear index of learning.
Conclusions. Throughout, the article provides a number of suggestions and possible directions for future research.

Spontaneous dissociative alterations in awareness and perception among highly suggestible individuals following a hypnotic induction may result from disruptions in the functional coordination of the frontal-parietal network. We recorded EEG and self-reported state dissociation in control and hypnosis conditions in two sessions with low and highly suggestible participants. Highly suggestible participants reliably experienced greater state dissociation and exhibited lower frontal-parietal phase synchrony in the alpha2 frequency band during hypnosis than low suggestible participants. These findings suggest that highly suggestible individuals exhibit a disruption of the frontal-parietal network that is only observable following a hypnotic induction.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
A total of 16 mindfulness meditators (MM) underwent both MEG measurement and structural MRI. Of these, a total of 12 had previously served in an EEG study with us, and their EEG data are reported (as part of a larger set) in a forthcoming publication (Berkovich-Ohana, Glicksohn, & Goldstein, under review).
We report: (1) that default mode network (DMN) activity is identified as reduced gamma mean phase coherence (MPC) during the transition from resting state to a time-production task; (2) a state increase in alpha MPC; (3) MM-induced trait reduction in right theta and left alpha and gamma MPC.
In our MEG study, we devised a novel protocol for assessing a change in time perception, space perception and perception of self, and focus on three specific experiences: a sense of timelessness, a sense of spacelessness and a sense of selflessness. Common brain regions underlying the spacelessness and timelessness conditions were found only for theta activity, including the bilateral parietal and medial frontal cortex, the right temporo-parietal cortex and left precuneus, as well as the cerebellum.
We found that shifting from a 'narrative' self-awareness to a 'minimal' self-awareness (MS) involves extensive medial prefrontal gamma band (60-80 Hz) decrease; (2) shifting to a selfless mode of processing is related to beta-band (13-25 Hz) decreases in a network that includes medial prefrontal, medial posterior and lateral parietal regions. These data are reported in two forthcoming publications (Berkovich-Ohana et al., under review; Dor-Ziderman et al., under review).

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Objectives: EEG biofeedback has been used to help train individuals to learn to consciously control
certain aspects of their brainwave activity. However, a number of methodological questions
remain concerning the nature of such training which limits our understanding of the process and
the possible effectiveness of the technique. Hence the aim of this project was to examine more
closely the nature of such training by using distinct reward thresholds, incorporating an equal
contact mock feedback control group and performing follow-up measures to examine the possible
long-term effects.
Methods: Using a standard pre/post intervention design we recruited 96 participants from four
institutions (CCCU, RAMS, UEA and AU). Participants initially completed a range of cognitive
(Conceptual Span Task; Mental Rotation Task, Alternative Uses Task) and mood measures (Profile
Of Mood States, STAI, BIS/BAS). They were then randomly allocated to either a real or mock
feedback condition utilising either a fixed low, medium, high or non-fixed variable reward
threshold. All participants then completed 10 training sessions, approximately twice per week,
with the aim to increase the amplitude of their alpha (8-12Hz) EEG rhythm. On completion of the
training participants again completed the cognitive and mood measures, and again at follow-up
after a delay of approx 4 wks.
Results: Initial analyses showed no evidence of a clear change in the EEG for those completing the
biofeedback training. In addition, the differential reward thresholds had no effect on changes in
EEG. A more fine tuned analysis, focusing on the effects of each institution, found that the
biofeedback training enhanced the peak frequency, width and power in the individual upper alpha
range (10-12Hz) but only for those with a low resting baseline frequency (<10Hz) and only in the
Russian (RAMS) sample.
Conclusions: It would seem clear that the training paradigm adopted here was not effective in
eliciting clear changes in the EEG.
Discussion: The project was less successful than anticipated in identifying potential methodological
factors that could positively influence learning. Nevertheless, the pattern of findings not only
provides a reasonable indication of what does not work but also highlights possible avenues for
further exploration. For instance, the motivation level of the individual, identifying a possible

BACKGROUND:
Advanced practitioners of mindfulness meditation become aware of transcendent experiences during the session, and can indicate that they are reflectively aware of a change in consciousness. Our preliminary data indicated the transition from trance to transcendence within meditation using EEG. A topographic snapshot of the EEG extracted between 5 and 10 minutes after the start of the meditation session (with eyes closed), for one advanced practitioner exhibits clear dominance of alpha activity both parietally—with L > R asymmetry—but also frontally—and especially mid-frontally. A second topographic snapshot extracted immediately prior to his signal indicating his change in reflective awareness exhibits a marked shift in parietal alpha asymmetry (R > L) and a greater amount of midfrontal alpha. An increase in theta power frontally was also found (Glicksohn & Berkovich Ohana, 2011).
OBJECTIVES:
(1) to have a select group of 8 experienced MM practitioners return for MEG measurement; (2) to conduct a detailed investigation of the transition from trance to transcendence, aided by the participant’s signal of a change in reflective awareness, and follow-up in-depth interview of these experiences.
METHODS:
MEG recordings are conducted with a whole-head, 248-channel magnetometer array in a magnetically shielded room. Our participants have complete EEG data from their previous session in our lab (Berkovich-Ohana, Glicksohn, & Goldstein, in press). We consider changes in the awareness of time, space or self as being indicative of the type of experience that we are particularly interested in when charting experiences of both trance and transcendence within meditation. Each such experience is investigated both by deliberate instruction and as appearing (if appearing) spontaneously. Each such dimension is also investigated using either a task or a questionnaire.
RESULTS:
Preliminary results will be presented at the symposium (the study is being run at the present).

ABSTRACT:
The Ganzfeld is a method of perceptual deprivation, involving a reduced patterning of stimulation; participants may experience altered states of consciousness. We look at both phenomenology and electrophysiology (EEG) of our participants immersed in Whole-Body Perceptual Deprivation (WBPD), with two goals to investigate: (1) a shift in state of consciousness and sense of self; (2) the induction of synesthesia. The participants first completed some questionnaires and then a time-production (TP) task. An eyes-closed EEG baseline recording was obtained. The white-illuminated WBPD chamber was then closed, and an eyes-closed recording (WBPD-1) allowed us to test for the immediate effect of WBPD. This was followed by red and indigo light, each presented for 5 minutes, after which a short report of subjective experience was obtained. The participants thus underwent 10 minutes of eyes-open WBPD, with two sounds introduced to facilitate the induction of synesthesia. Then a third eyes-closed EEG (WBPD-2), followed by a short report of subjective experience, and a second TP task were done, followed by an extensive interview. Our participants reported experiences of an unusual character. The differential effect of the colored environments on some of them is quite familiar; a focus on bodily sensations, coupled with a feeling of immersion, is also well known. There are wide individual differences in EEG alpha profile: Male participants should not be pooled with female participants, because their alpha asymmetry profiles are diametrically opposed. There are also wide individual differences in time production: When “time disappeared”, TP becomes haphazard; when “time was slower” or “time was expanded”, TP is lengthened.

We use a unique environment of Whole Body Perceptual Deprivation (WBPD) to induce an altered state of consciousness (ASC) in our participants, and employ online EEG recording. We present individual EEG alpha profiles, and show how these data can be analyzed at the individual level. Our goal is to investigate to what degree subjective experience matches EEG alpha profile, and in particular, the various alpha hemispheric asymmetries observed in the frontal, parietal, and occipital lobes. Specifically, we consider positive (frontal L < R) or negative (frontal L > R) affect; a more verbal (L > R) or a more imagistic (R > L) mode of thinking; and a more trancelike (frontal > parietal) or more reflective (frontal < parietal) state of consciousness. Our results indicate that the individual alpha profiles are reflected in individual differences in subjective experience. However, the alpha profiles are confounded with the gender of the participant. Specifically, there is a predominant R > L asymmetry found for male participants, and a predominant L > R asymmetry found for female participants.

Title:
Reduction in lower-alpha power during Ganzfeld flicker stimulation is associated with the production of imagery and trait positive schizotypy

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT
Light-flicker Ganzfeld (LFG) induces a lower to upper-alpha frequency shift. However, it is unclear how this neurophysiological response might relate to LFG-induced pseudo-hallucinatory phenomena. It is also unknown whether emotional states (e.g., fear) or traits associated with risk for psychosis (e.g., proneness to perceptual anomalies, ability to produce vivid mental imagery) affect such neurophysiological and/or perceptual responses to LFG. The present study investigated alpha sub-bands during LFG across several flicker frequencies, in relation to individual differences in propensity for Ganzfeld-induced imagery (GI), positive schizotypy and trait mental imagery, and in relation to manipulations of affective state. Given previously reported sex differences in risk for psychosis and response to Ganzfeld, the effect of sex on GI was also studied. Forty-six healthy adults (16 men) completed psychometric measures of trait mental imagery and positive schizotypy before undergoing three LFG (20?min each) conditions. In each condition, participants wore white-out goggles and listened to either mood-inducing soundscapes (fear, serenity) or pink noise (control) through headphones. Greatest propensity for GI arose between 13.1 and 16.0?Hz flicker, with a peak at 16.0?Hz flicker. Occipital lower-alpha was reduced for lower flicker frequencies (13.1-16.0?Hz) and was inversely associated with GI. Upper-alpha power was not significantly related to GI or to other measures. Fear-induction was associated with reduction in alpha power, but did not significantly affect GI. Men reported more GI than women. Findings support a role for cortical destabilisation, as reflected in reduced lower-alpha, in perceptual anomalies; and, by extension, LFG as an experimental model of liability for psychosis.

EEG recordings of human occipital alpha-band oscillations have been strongly linked to visual perception. In particular, cortical excitability is increased in areas exhibiting low alpha amplitude. Although the frequency of alpha oscillations varies significantly between individuals, it has only rarely been studied as an independent factor in shaping perception. Temporal integration of successive stimuli has recently been shown to depend on individual alpha oscillation frequency, with faster frequencies resulting in finer temporal resolution in perception. This suggests that perception may qualitatively differ between individuals with different spontaneous alpha frequencies. Moreover, underlying the differences in temporal resolution may be a more basic visual process: differences in sensitivity to visual flicker. We tested this hypothesis by correlating performance in a flicker detection task with the speed of individual alpha rhythms. For each participant, we obtained temporal contrast sensitivity functions and related the stimulus frequency at peak sensitivity to individual alpha frequency. Our results demonstrate that individual alpha frequency predicts contrast sensitivity to visual flicker. Individuals with faster spontaneous alpha rhythms were maximally sensitive at faster stimulus flicker frequencies. Importantly, such individuals performed worse at slower stimulus frequencies than those with naturally slower alpha rhythms. This suggests that individual alpha frequency specifically predicts the stimulus flicker frequency which produces maximum contrast sensitivity. The findings provide evidence for a link between alpha frequency and individual differences in basic, low-level visual perception.

Many traditions have utilized silent environments to induce altered states of consciousness and spiritual experiences. Neurocognitive explorations of spiritual experience can aid in understanding the underlying mechanism, but these are surprisingly rare. We present the verbal report and the electroencephalographic (EEG) alpha profile of a female participant scoring a maximal 34 on the Absorption Scale, recorded before and while she was immersed in a whole-body perceptual deprivation (WBPD) tank. We analyze her trancelike experience in terms of the imagery reported: a spaceship, corridors, doors, a man dressed in white, speaking to God, the sun, supernova, concentric images, and an out-of-body experience. Her report is indicative of a spiritual experience, given that she felt that she was “meeting God” in the laboratory. She exhibited both frontal and parietal left > right alpha power asymmetry at baseline, whereas in the WBPD condition, there was a global increase in alpha power and especially a sharp increase in right-frontal alpha power. Her verbal report and EEG alpha profile were compared to those of another female participant, also scoring high on absorption, whose verbal report was also indicative of a trancelike experience. For further comparison, we present the data for two participants scoring low on absorption. Spiritual experience that can be verbalized might be associated with a marked increase in right-frontal alpha power, as reported here. In contrast, a mystical experience characterized by ineffability would be indicated by a marked increase in left-frontal alpha power.

Several lines of evidence suggest that humans can predict events that seem to be unpredictable through ordinary sensory means. After reviewing the literature in this controversial field, I present an exploratory EEG study that addresses this hypothesis. I used a pattern classification algorithm drawing on EEG data prior to stimulus presentation to successfully predict upcoming motor responses that were constrained by the upcoming stimulus. Both the phase of peak alpha activity and overall amplitude at similar to 550 ms prior to the presentation of the stimulus were useful in predicting the upcoming motor response. Although these results support the idea that brain activity may reflect precognitive processes in certain situations, due to the exploratory nature of this study, additional pre-registered confirmatory experiments are required before the results can be considered solid. Implications for creating a closed-loop predictive system based on human physiology are discussed.

One outstanding question in the contemplative science literature relates to the direct impact of meditation experience on the monitoring of internal states and its respective correspondence with neural activity. In particular, to what extent does meditation influence the awareness, duration and frequency of the tendency of the mind to wander. To assess the relation between mind wandering and meditation, we tested 2 groups of meditators, one with a moderate level of experience (non-expert) and those who are well advanced in their practice (expert). We designed a novel paradigm using self-reports of internal mental states based on an experiential sampling probe paradigm presented during similar to 1 h of seated concentration meditation to gain insight into the dynamic measures of electroencephalography (EEG) during absorption in meditation as compared to reported mind wandering episodes. Our results show that expert meditation practitioners report a greater depth and frequency of sustained meditation, whereas non-expert practitioners report a greater depth and frequency of mind wandering episodes. This is one of the first direct behavioral indices of meditation expertise and its associated impact on the reduced frequency of mind wandering, with corresponding EEG activations showing increased frontal midline theta and somatosensory alpha rhythms during meditation as compared to mind wandering in expert practitioners. Frontal midline theta and somatosensory alpha rhythms are often observed during executive functioning, cognitive control and the active monitoring of sensory information. Our study thus provides additional new evidence to support the hypothesis that the maintenance of both internal and external orientations of attention may be maintained by similar neural mechanisms and that these mechanisms may be modulated by meditation training.

Abstract/Results: Visuospatial working memory (WM) requires the activity of a spread network, including right parietal regions, to sustain storage capacity, attentional deployment, and active manipulation of information. Notably, while the electrophysiological correlates of such regions have been explored using many different indices, evidence for a functional involvement of the individual frequency peaks in the alpha (IAF) and theta bands (ITF) is still poor despite their relevance in many influential theories regarding WM. Interestingly, there is also a parallel lack of literature about the effect of short-term practice on WM performance. Here, we aim to clarify whether the simple repetition of a change-detection task might be beneficial to WM performance and to which degree these effects could be predicted by IAF and ITF. For this purpose, 25 healthy participants performed a change-detection task at baseline and in a retest session, while IAF and ITF were also measured. Results show that task repetition improves WM performance. In addition, right parietal IAF, but not ITF, accounts for performance gain such that faster IAF predicts higher performance gain. Our findings align with recent literature suggesting that the faster the posterior alpha, the finer the perceptual sampling rate, and the higher the WM performance gain.

ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND
Several studies suggest that emotional cues activate cortico-limbic appetitive and defensive systems, which, in turn, enhance attention allocation. Attentional effects have been reported using a variety of visual and acoustic tasks, suggesting that, compared to neutral stimuli, emotional distractors draw more on attentional resources, leaving them less available for task processing.
AIMS
The primary aims were to investigate how novelty affects electrocortical responses to emotional distractors.
METHOD
Peripheral task-irrelevant emotional or neutral pictures were presented while participants performed an orientation task. In Experiment 1, stimuli were repeated several times throughout a habituation phase, while in Experiment 2, distractors were presented in separate blocks at high (80%) or low (20%) frequency of occurrence.
RESULTS
In both experiments, contextual factors (habituation, frequency of distractors occurrence) reduced or eliminated the effect of emotional interference induced by novel emotional (pleasant or unpleasant), compared to neutral stimuli. At the neural level (Late Positive Potential and alpha power) sustained emotional effects were observed despite the repetition or the high occurrence (vs. low) of emotional distractors.
CONCLUSIONS
The filtering mechanisms regulating emotional interference can be attenuated through a non-strategic learning mechanism mediated by (1) mere stimulus repetition and (2) the frequency of distractors occurrence. In both cases, however, neural measures of emotional processing (alpha-ERD) remained unaltered, suggesting that our perceptual system serves the mandatory adaptive function of identifying potential threats or rewards. This project might have important implications for the current society, where people are constantly bombarded by information that could ultimately cause psychological stress, a condition recently named technostress. Our data suggest that emotional information is continuously evaluated, even when 1) the task at hand does not require an explicit judgment on the visual stimuli and 2) there are no apparent behavioral markers that emotional distractors are affecting our performance.

Task-free brain activity exhibits spontaneous fluctuations between functional states, characterized by synchronized activation patterns in distributed resting-state (RS) brain networks. The temporal dynamics of the networks’ electrophysiological signatures reflect individual variations in brain activity and connectivity linked to mental states and cognitive functions and can predict or monitor vulnerability to develop psychiatric or neurological disorders. In particular, RS alpha fluctuations modulate perceptual sensitivity, attentional shifts, and cognitive control, and could therefore reflect a neural correlate of increased vulnerability to sensory distortions, including the proneness to hallucinatory experiences. We recorded 5 min of RS EEG from 33 non-clinical individuals varying in hallucination proneness (HP) to investigate links between task-free alpha dynamics and vulnerability to hallucinations. To this end, we used a dynamic brain state allocation method to identify five recurrent alpha states together with their spatiotemporal dynamics and most active brain areas through source reconstruction. The dynamical features of a state marked by activation in somatosensory, auditory, and posterior default-mode network areas predicted auditory and auditory-verbal HP, but not general HP, such that individuals with higher vulnerability to auditory hallucinations spent more time in this state. The temporal dynamics of spontaneous alpha activity might reflect individual differences in attention to internally generated sensory events and altered auditory perceptual sensitivity. Altered RS alpha dynamics could therefore instantiate a neural marker of increased vulnerability to
auditory hallucinations.
