The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology. To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665). Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world. Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results:	RESULTS: The present study employs standardized data acquired from the Brain Resource International Database to study the relationship between mobile phone usage, personality, and brain function (n = 300). Based on the frequency and duration of mobile phone usage, three groups were formed. The findings suggest a subtle slowing of brain activity related to mobile phone use that is not explained by differences in personality. These changes are still within normal physiological ranges. Better executive function in mobile phone users may reflect more focused attention, possibly associated with a cognitive training effect (i.e., frequently making phone calls in distracting places), rather than a direct effect of mobile phone use on cognition. Title:	Pro attitude and macro-PK: A pilot study using neuro-feedback and EMG biofeedback

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Using the ProComp+ neuro-feedback apparatus, intermittent feedback was given to eight participants as they performed an alternating bimodal (i.e., normal and paranormal) task, switched at irregular intervals. During normal modes, participants were required to keep EEG alpha rhythm above threshold, and/or EMG amplitude below threshold, in order to elicit positive feedback of a 'Spinning Man' animation. The man spun only when one or both threshold contingencies were met. During paranormal modes, regardless of alpha and/or EMG amplitudes, the participants were required to keep the man spinning, but they were blind to the fact that their attempts could only elicit micro-PK changes (i.e., 'anomalous perturbations') on a single frame taken from the Spinning Man animation sequence. If psi was elicited during this mode, anomalies were expected as a result of participants' focussed attention. It was hypothesised that (i) video anomalies might occur during the paranormal modes, and (ii) EEG alpha amplitude might be higher, and/or integrated EMG amplitude might be lower, during paranormal modes. Stills of the video frame caught during paranormal modes were later analysed. No evidence was found for (i) or (ii). Three un-hypothesised 'anomalous' effects occurred during the running of the experiment but, on parsimonious grounds, these were attributed to software flaws. It is argued that lack of biofeedback during paranormal modes may have been psi-inhibitive. Previous meditation and biofeedback experience had no effect on EEG alpha amplitude or EMG. Some participants showed evidence of waveform training. Transliminality correlated with alpha and EMG in the directions hypothesised, but only approached significance in the Transliminality/alpha correlation.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Neuropsychological findings in eating disorders are somewhat inconsistent. This may be because individual studies have used a broad range of tests on relatively small, heterogeneous clinical groups, thus limiting the detection of subtle neuropsychological differences in these patients. Therefore, rather than using broad assessments of a variety of neuropsychological functions, adoption of a more focused, hypothesis-driven approach based on clinical practice is proposed. This will allow more in-depth investigations of targeted functions and will improve the chances of detecting a problem, of exploring its ecologic validity, and of tailoring a treatment. We have demonstrated this approach using our neuropsychological studies of cognitive flexibility in anorexia nervosa.

Title:	Neuropsychological profile in the overweight population: An exploratory study of set-shifting and detail focused processing styles

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Biases in information processing styles, as measured by neuropsychological tasks, have been reported in the eating disorder literature. In particular, an inflexible, rigid processing style (poor set-shifting) and a bias toward detail to the exclusion of the bigger picture (weak central coherence) have been observed. This report investigates these traits in the overweight population, by comparing the neuropsychological profile of 50 normal-weight and ten overweight members of the general population. Small-to-negligible effect sizes are seen for the set-shifting tasks; however, a mixed profile with moderate-to-strong effect sizes is seen for tasks measuring detail focus. This exploratory study provides an intriguing introduction to neuropsychological profiles in the overweight population. Further exploration of these traits within the overweight/obese population is recommended.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: The objective of this study is to determine (a) if decision making ability is impaired in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and in people with good recovery from AN and (b) whether any impairment in decision making is associated with alterations in skin conductance responses (SCR). Patients with AN (n = 29), healthy controls comparable in age and IQ (HC, n = 29), and women long term recovered from AN (n = 14), completed the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) while their SCR were measured. AN patients performed poorly in the IGT compared to the HC and to the recovered AN participants. AN patients had decreased anticipatory SCR prior to choosing cards and reduced SCR after losses compared to HC. IGT performance and the SCR of recovered AN participants did not differ from the HC. Decision making ability is impaired in AN. It is associated with a significantly attenuated SCR. Neither of these features are found in recovered AN. The association between impaired decision making ability and a decreased autonomic response is consistent with the predictions of the Somatic Marker Hypothesis.

Abstract/Results:	RESULTS: A total of 225 particpants were recruited into this project. Women with current AN demonstrated poor decision making on the IGT compared to both healthy controls and recovered AN participants (p=0.05). AN patients, but not those who were recovered from AN, showed a significantly diminished Anticipatory Skin Conductance Response (ASCR) before making high-risk choices in comparison with female controls (p=0.01). BN patients did not show any significant differences in IGT performance or skin conductance response compared to the other groups. In the whole group of participants, IGT performance was not correlated to current levels of depression(p=0.6) or anxiety (p=0.7). However, IGT performance showed significant moderate correlations with ASCR (p=0.01). Data analysis (e.g. males, BN, genotype and IGT performance) and is still in progress and more articles are being planned or in preparation. AN is relatively rare condition in men. We have collected data and planning to increase recruitment of the participants to increase the power of this study in progress.

Title:	An investigation of decision making in anorexia nervosa using the Iowa Gambling Task and skin conductance measurements

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: The objective of this study is to determine (a) if decision making ability is impaired in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and in people with good recovery from AN and (b) whether any impairment in decision making is associated with alterations in skin conductance responses (SCR). Patients with AN (n = 29), healthy controls comparable in age and IQ (HC, n = 29), and women long term recovered from AN (n = 14), completed the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) while their SCR were measured. AN patients performed poorly in the IGT compared to the HC and to the recovered AN participants. AN patients had decreased anticipatory SCR prior to choosing cards and reduced SCR after losses compared to HC. IGT performance and the SCR of recovered AN participants did not differ from the HC. Decision making ability is impaired in AN. It is associated with a significantly attenuated SCR. Neither of these features are found in recovered AN. The association between impaired decision making ability and a decreased autonomic response is consistent with the predictions of the Somatic Marker Hypothesis.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to investigate preferential information processing style in Eating Disorders (ED). We compared the performance of participants with EDs against healthy controls in a task that measures cognitive style (reflection–impulsivity) and cognitive efficiency (inefficient–efficient). Sixty non-medicated female participants (healthy controls n = 26, anorexia nervosa n = 20, bulimia nervosa n = 14) took part in the Matching Familiar Figures Test (MFFT), a difficult visual search paradigm with high response uncertainty. Participants with anorexia scored significantly higher on the efficiency dimension score than the control group. No significant differences were found across groups on the dimension ‘reflection–impulsivity’. Participants with anorexia are more efficient (quicker response latencies in conjunction with fewer errors) in this visual search task that requires an analytic approach. This supports the hypothesis that individuals with anorexia have a positive bias toward local detail processing, indicative of weak central coherence.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Biases in information processing styles, as measured by neuropsychological tasks, have been reported in the eating disorder literature. In particular, an inflexible, rigid processing style (poor set-shifting) and a bias toward detail to the exclusion of the bigger picture (weak central coherence) have been observed. This report investigates these traits in the overweight population, by comparing the neuropsychological profile of 50 normal-weight and ten overweight members of the general population. Small-to-negligible effect sizes are seen for the set-shifting tasks; however, a mixed profile with moderate-to-strong effect sizes is seen for tasks measuring detail focus. This exploratory study provides an intriguing introduction to neuropsychological profiles in the overweight population. Further exploration of these traits within the overweight/obese population is recommended.

Title:	Poor decision making in male patients with anorexia nervosa

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE: Decision making is impaired in female patients with anorexia nervosa (AN), but it is unclear if the same impairment is present in male patients with AN. METHOD: Decision making was assessed in 48 AN individuals (19 male and 29 female patients) and 61 healthy controls (20 male and 41 female patients) using the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). RESULTS: Both male and female patients with AN performed significantly worse than healthy controls on the IGT. No gender differences in IGT performance were found across groups. Male patients had higher impulsivity scores, but impulsivity had not predicted poor decision-making performance. DISCUSSION: Impaired decision making is present in male and female patients with AN. These data suggest that male patients with AN are very similar to female patients in decision making, and as a result, treatment approaches that seek to improve this ability should be similar in both genders.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate a novel and brief skills-based therapy for in-patients with anorexia nervosa, which addressed 'cold' and 'hot' cognition. METHOD: Eighty one adults with anorexia nervosa were recruited from two eating disorder in-patient units. In one unit, patients received 10 sessions of cognitive remediation and emotion skills training (CREST) plus treatment as usual. In the other, patients received treatment as usual only. Primary outcomes were body mass index and neuropsychological performance scores. RESULTS: Both groups improved significantly in body mass index and cognitive flexibility. The CREST group also improved on central coherence. Neither group improved significantly on emotion-processing tasks, although the CREST group did show a larger magnitude of change. CONCLUSION: Improvement in 'cold' cognition was achieved in a short period, whereas emotion-processing difficulties might take longer and more therapeutic work to change. Given that effect sizes in the CREST group were larger for the emotion-processing tasks, improved power may benefit future studies.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: This study investigated the correspondence between self-report and experimental measures of cognitive flexibility in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) and healthy controls (HCs). Ninety-four participants (45 individuals with AN and 49 HCs) completed the self-report Cognitive Flexibility Scale (CFS) and an experimental task, the Brixton Spatial Anticipation Test. The AN group performed poorly on both measures of cognitive flexibility compared with HCs. There was no significant correlation between the CFS scores and the errors on the Brixton Test for both groups. The findings suggest there is poor correspondence between the self-report measure of cognitive flexibility and performance on the flexibility test. These two assessment tools therefore cannot be used interchangeably to assess cognitive flexibility. Flexibility is an important clinical characteristic in AN. The results suggest that self-report and behavioral measures can be complementary, but cannot be used as an alternative to one another.

Title:	Meta-analytic evidence for a reversal learning effect on the Iowa gambling task in older adults

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) is one of the most widely used tools to assess economic decision-making. However, the research tradition on aging and the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) has been mainly focused on the overall performance of older adults in relation to younger or clinical groups, remaining unclear whether older adults are capable of learning along the task. We conducted a meta-analysis to examine older adults' decision-making on the IGT, to test the effects of aging on reversal learning (45 studies) and to provide normative data on total and block net scores (55 studies). From the accumulated empirical evidence, we found an average total net score of 7.55 (±25.9). We also observed a significant reversal learning effect along the blocks of the IGT, indicating that older adults inhibit the prepotent response toward immediately attractive options associated with high losses, in favor of initially less attractive options associated with long-run profit. During block 1, decisions of older adults led to a negative gambling net score, reflecting the expected initial pattern of risk-taking. However, the shift toward more safe options occurred between block 2 (small-to-medium effect size) and blocks 3, 4, 5 (medium-to-large effect size). These main findings highlight that older adults are able to move from the initial uncertainty, when the possible outcomes are unknown, to decisions based on risk, when the outcomes are learned and may be used to guide future adaptive decision-making.

Title:	Self-perspective in episodic memory after parietal damage and in healthy ageing

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT Although there is strong support from functional imaging studies for lateral parietal lobe involvement in episodic memory, patients with damage to these regions do not appear to suffer from severe deficits in this cognitive domain. As such there has been no definitive explanation of this area's precise involvement. Here, we hypothesised that parietal regions play a crucial role in episodic memory - specifically in recollecting details from an egocentric perspective. In order to test this hypothesis systematically, we designed a novel experimental task utilising a head-mounted camera to record images from the participant's perspective, enabling us to evaluate the integrity of memory from the individual's own point of view. In the first study we examined patients with parietal damage and in a second study, using fMRI, we examined young and older healthy participants. Right-hemisphere patients with parietal damage were able to recall information accurately when recollecting what items had been present and where these items had been. However, patients were significantly impaired when attempting to judge from which perspective they had viewed the scenes. Critically, the patient group showed no evidence of impairment on standard tests of episodic and working memory. Examination of healthy participants in the second study utilised multi-voxel pattern analysis on neural activity during the recognition phase of a similar task. This revealed sensitivity to be highest around the angular gyrus of the lateral parietal cortex for our critical comparison - that is, when viewing stimuli that were the same as their egocentric view during encoding versus the identical scene but presented from an alternative angle. Our results provide important evidence that parietal cortex is directly involved in egocentric spatial perspective aspects of episodic memory and demonstrate for the first time a specific deficit in episodic memory in patients with right parietal damage.
