History:	The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research. The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology. To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665). Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world. Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Title:	Final report - Shamanic-like journeying and psi-hitting: Searching for the psi-conducive component(s) of a novel experimental protocol

Abstract/Results:	RESULTS: It is pertinent to explore stimulus conditions that might produce psi effects at least as strong as those elicited in the ganzfeld condition, particularly if those stimulus conditions are less complex than the ganzfeld. Consequently, Storm and Rock developed an imagery cultivation (IC) model, which considers shamanic-like techniques to be psi-conducive, and provided some supportive evidence for their claim. The objective of the present study was to determine which component(s) of the shamanic-like journeying stimulus used by Storm and Rock is/are psi-conducive. Since psi-modifying variables should also be investigated in psi research, paranormal belief/experience (measured on Thalbourne’s Australian Sheep-Goat Scale), Transliminality (the tendency for psychological material to cross into or out of consciousness), and Self-Expansiveness (measured on Friedman’s Self- Expansiveness Level Form) were tested in the present study as possible predictors of psi. Nonshamans (N = 200) were randomly assigned to one of four conditions: (a) instructions + drumming; (b) instructions only; (c) drumming only; and (d) control condition (i.e., no instructions, no drumming). After these conditions, participants gave mentations, and ranked a randomly selected concealed line-drawing as target. Hit rates were above chance (not significantly) in all three treatment conditions, and below chance in the control condition. Paranormal belief, transliminality, and self- expansiveness did not predict hit rates.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Historically, transpersonal experience has been linked to paranormal or anomalous experience (i.e., psi, such as telepathy, psychokinesis, clairvoyance). In parapsychology, the Ganzfeld (i.e., a homogeneous visual and auditory field) is arguably the most widely used ostensibly psiconducive technique. However, one area of shared interest in parapsychology and transpersonal psychology is shamanic experience (see Daniels, 2005). Based on anthropological and parapsychological claims concerning alleged psi effects during shamanic practices, we (Storm & Rock, 2009a) proposed an imagery cultivation (IC) model, which encourages ostensibly psi-conducive cognitive activity during a shamanic-like journeying procedure rather than the mental quietude promoted by the Ganzfeld noise-reduction model. In this paper we outline our IC model and describe an experimental protocol designed to test that model. Our recent empirical tests of the model (Rock, Storm, Harris, & Friedman, 2012; Storm & Rock, 2009b) are also reviewed. Finally, various directions for future research are proposed.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Storm and Rock (2009a) developed an imagery cultivation (IC) model which regards shamanic techniques and, similarly, shamanic-like techniques, as being psi-conducive. In a recent experimental study, Storm and Rock (2009b) obtained preliminary empirical support for the IC model. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to determine which component/s of the shamaniclike journeying stimulus used by Storm and Rock (2009b) is/are psi-conducive. Since psi-modifying variables should also be investigated in psi research, paranormal belief/experience (as measured on Thalbourne’s, 1995, Australian Sheep-Goat Scale), Transliminality (the tendency for psychological material to cross into or out of consciousness; see Thalbourne & Houran, 2000), and Self-Expansiveness (as measured on Friedman’s, 1983, Self-Expansiveness Level Form) were tested in the present study as possible predictors of psi. DESIGN AND PROCEDURE: Two hundred non-shamans were randomly assigned to one of four conditions: (1) instructions with drumming; (2) instructions without drumming; (3) no instructions with drumming; and (4) no instructions and no drumming (control condition). After the stimulus condition, participants were required to describe verbally, and then rank a randomly-selected concealed line-drawing, which they held throughout the condition. RESULTS: Hit rates were above chance in the instruction + drumming condition and instruction condition only (not significantly). Self-expansiveness predicted hit-rates. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides tentative support for the IC model, which suggests that drumming without imagery cultivation instructions will be associated with hit rates at chance. DISCUSSION: This study highlights the importance of the self-expansiveness construct in the context of shamanic-like journeying and psi-hitting.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND AND AIM Using a picture-guessing task, and a shamanic-like journeying protocol that accords with the Imagery Cultivation Model, and following principles of reactance theory, this study sought insight into: (i) psi-enhancing effects of Imagery Cultivation (IC); and (ii) detrimental effects of reactance on psi hitting. Since those participants who express extreme disagreement with the reactance prime are found to shift against the position advocated in a threatening message, a measure of ‘discrepancy’ was introduced in order to ascertain the degree to which participants were affected by the reactance manipulation. METHOD Participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups: IC/Reactance; IC/Non-Reactance; Non-IC/Reactance; or Non-IC/Non-Reactance. Participants completed a precognition trial, success indicated by a direct hit (the future target picture was ranked #1 by the participant). RESULTS The IC treatment had a minor effect. Reactance group scored more hits than the Non-Reactance group (not sig.), largely attributable to ‘indecisives’ (mid-range paranormal believers). As expected, sheep scored higher than goats (not sig.); also as expected, ‘discrepants’ scored higher (marginally) than ‘non-discrepants’. Relationship between psi scoring and paranormal belief (RASGS) scores was positive and marginally significant. CONCLUSION Generally, psi effects were weak but mostly in the directions expected. Changes to the IC treatment may have reduced its effectiveness (comparisons of variations to the IC are advised). The reactance communication, which is supposed to be a threat to freedom, needs revision as it may be too persuasive. More precise measures of reactance treatment effects may be helpful.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: A psi-conducive altered state of consciousness can be induced through a shamanic-like journeying protocol in accordance with the Imagery Cultivation (IC) model proposed by Storm and Rock (2009a). Storm and Rock (2009b) found that the protocol helped cultivate psi-related mental imagery. Alternatively, it is hypothesized that individuals who do notbelieve in psi or paranormal phenomena (i.e. ‘goats’) are prone to so-called reactance (Brehm 1966). Reactance is a motivational state aimed at restoring one’s sense of freedom when one feels threatened (Silvia 2005). A reactance treatment in the form of an opinionated communication (perceived as a threat to freedom) can raise reactance, which remains high if no outlet is provided. This induced effect can result in a noncompliant attitude and response, purely as a knee-jerk reaction to the threat. It is hypothesized that higher noncompliant behavior (e.g., psi-missing) can be induced in goats. Storm, Ertel, and Rock (2013) and Storm and Rock (2014) found support for the reactance hypothesis. IC and Reactance principles were used in the present study to manipulate psi in positive and negative directions, respectively. Four groups (total N = 240) were formed: (i) IC/Reactance, (ii) IC/No-Reactance; (iii) No-IC/Reactance, and (iv) No-IC/No-Reactance. The IC treatment produced a non-significant but slightly higher psi effect than the control condition. The reactance treatment had a stronger psychological effect on goats compared with sheep, indicated by a significantly greater discrepancy in goats over the opinionated communication. Significant reactance effects were not found, but specific effects were in the directions expected, with reversals of effects probably due to goats and ‘indecisives’ (mid-range scorers on paranormal belief) in the No-IC/Reactance group. A marginally significant sheep–goat effect was found. Replication attempts would be worthwhile that include refinements to the various IC conditions, and a less persuasive (more challenging) reactance communication.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: A series of four articles published in this journal has seen the development of the 30-item Spiritual Emergency Scale (SES) that measures a single factor—namely spiritual emergency—derived from factor analysis. The SES provisionally owes its origins to items drawn from ten different types of spiritual emergency, including ‘Psychic Opening’, ‘Peak Experiences’, and ‘Activation of the Central Archetype’. The SES demonstrates good psychometric properties, and scores predict psychotic episode. However, the SES has not been used in a parapsychological study to test the claim that spiritual emergency can involve psychic opening (e.g., awakening of extrasensory perception). In the present study, we found that SES scores correlated positively with outcome on a precognition task, and significantly so in a dataset where outliers were removed. The correlations only approached significance for a subsample of paranormal believers (i.e., ‘sheep’). The SES also correlated positively with paranormal belief and reality testing deficits. As these correlates are of some concern, we discuss the clinical uses of the SES.

History:	The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives. Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge. Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research. The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology. To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665). Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world. Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: A defining aspect of Spiritual Emergency (SE) is a ‘Psychic Opening’, which may predict psi performance. This study tested paranormal (psi) performance of individuals who had or were having experiences of Spiritual Emergency (i.e. ‘SE-experients’), and compared their performance against controls. The study also assessed psychological aspects of SE to differentiate it from psychosis and other proposed psi-inhibitive symptoms—namely, alogia (i.e. poverty of speech), depression, anxiety, and stress. Two groups of participants were formed: controls (mainly psychology students) and SE-experients. Participants either completed the study on a computer in the laboratory or online. Questionnaires on Spiritual Emergency (which includes a subscale on Psychic Opening), positive symptoms of psychosis, alogia, spiritual identity, paranormal belief, mysticism, depression, anxiety, and stress, were administered to participants, who then completed the Imagery Cultivation (IC) pictureidentification psi task, which uses a shamanic-like journeying protocol (Storm & Rock, 2009a, 2009b). The differences between controls and SE-experients on the psi measures, Direct Hitting (as a percent hit-rate) and Mean Rank Scores, were not significant, but the Sum-of-Ranks difference was highly significant. Also, SE-experients had a marginally significant Mean Rank Score. Direct Hitting did not correlate significantly with any variable, except Rank Scores, which correlated significantly with Psychic Opening, spiritual identity, and paranormal belief, and marginally significantly with Spiritual Emergency. Direct Hitting, Rank Scores, and SE did not correlate significantly with alogia, depression, anxiety, or stress, but the psychosis measure did correlate significantly with alogia, depression, anxiety, stress, and SE. The statistical evidence suggests that some proportion of SE-experients experience Psychic Opening. While SE and psychosis overlap, only SE was predicted by spiritual identity, extrovertive mysticism, and paranormal belief (but not alogia), whereas psychosis was predicted by alogia only.

This study tested psi performance of individuals experienced in spiritual emergency, and compared performances with controls. Also assessed were psychological aspects of SE to differentiate it from psychosis, alogia, depression, anxiety, and stress. METHOD Two groups: controls (Psych. students) and SE-Experients. Participants completed the study on computer. Questionnaires on SE, psychic opening, psychosis, spiritual identity, paranormal belief, mysticism, depression, anxiety, and stress were administered to participants, who then completed the Imagery Cultivation (IC) picture-identification psi task (Storm & Rock, 2009). RESULTS The differences between controls and SE-experients on the psi measures, direct hitting (hit-count) and mean rank scores, were not significant, but the sum-of-ranks difference was highly significant. SE-experients had a near-significant mean rank score. Direct hitting did not correlate significantly with psychosis, alogia, SE, psychic opening, spiritual identity, paranormal belief, or mysticism, but rank scores correlated significantly with psychic opening, spiritual identity, and paranormal belief, and marginally significantly with SE. Direct hitting, rank scores, and SE did not correlate significantly with the psychosis measures (depression, anxiety, and stress), but psychosis did correlate significantly with alogia, depression, anxiety, stress, and SE. CONCLUSIONS The statistical evidence suggests SE-experients experienced more psychic opening and more psi than controls. SE was differentiated from psychosis, by not correlating with alogia, depression, anxiety, or stress.
