The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology. To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665). Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world. Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: The present study describes the responses of cortisol, prolactin and growth hormone (GH) to emotions elicited during sessions in which an hypnoidal state was induced. The purpose of the study was to provide answers for the following questions: 1) Do sessions with an emotional content have more hormonal surges than baseline, relaxation-only, sessions? 2) Does the induction of a fantasy of pregnancy and nursing elicit a prolactin response? 3) Are there any associations between surges of different hormones? 4) Are hormonal responses related to the intensity, type, or mode of expression of the emotions? For this purpose, thirteen volunteers and twelve patients with minor emotional difficulties were studied during sessions under hypnosis. The period of observation lasted for about three hours. Heart rate (HR), skin conductance (SC) and vagal tone (VT) were monitored. Serum cortisol, prolactin and growth hormone were sampled every 15 minutes. The volunteers had three types of sessions— “blank”, consisting of relaxation only (12 sessions), “breast feeding”, in which a fantasy of pregnancy and breast feeding was induced (12 sessions) and “free associations” in which the subjects were encouraged to evoke experiences or feelings (17 sessions). The patients had only sessions of free associations (38 sessions). Sessions of free associations had more hormonal surges than “blank” and “breast feeding” sessions. This was true for cortisol (8/17 v.3/24; p < 0.03), prolactin (7/17 v. 3/24; p < 0.05) and GH (9/17 v. 4/24; p < 0.02). During the 55 sessions of free associations (volunteers plus patients) there were 32 surges of cortisol, 18 of prolactin and 28 of GH. Cortisol and prolactin surges were negatively correlated (p < 0.03). GH had no significant association with either cortisol or prolactin. Visible emotions were positively associated with GH surges (p < 0.05). but not with cortisol or prolactin. Cortisol surges were correlated positively with evocations of real events (p < 0.01) and negatively with evocations containing defensive elements (p < 0.01). Cortisol correlated positively with shock and intimidation (p < 0.02) and negatively with rage (p < 0.04). The AUC of the cortisol peaks during shock and intimidation was significantly higher than that of the pool of all other cortisol peaks (12.4 µmol.min.l-1 v. 7.1 µmol.min.l-1; p < 0.005). Rage had a marginally significant positive association with prolactin surges (p=0.07). The distribution of GH surges did not show any significant association with types of emotions. The present study provides evidence that cortisol, prolactin and GH respond to psychological stress in humans. However, they are regulated differently from one another. Cortisol and prolactin surges appear to be alternative forms of response to specific emotions. GH surges depend on the intensity of the emotion, probably as a consequence of the associated muscular activity. The current paradigm of stress, implying corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH) as the initial step of a cascade of events, is insufficient to account for the diversity of hormonal changes observed in psychological stress in humans.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Adverse effects of maternal anxiety and depression are well documented, namely on the foetus/child behaviour and development, but not as much attention has been given to the mother's emotional involvement with the offspring. To study mother's prenatal and postpartum stress, mood and emotional involvement with the infant, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and the Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale were filled in and cortisol levels were measured, 3 months before and 3 months after childbirth, in a sample of 91 Portuguese women. From pregnancy to the postpartum period, mother's cortisol levels, anxiety and emotional involvement toward the child decrease. No significant change was observed regarding mother's depression. Mother's depression predicted a worse emotional involvement before childbirth, while mother's anxiety predicted a worse emotional involvement with the infant after childbirth. Additionally, pregnant women with a worse emotional involvement with the offspring are at risk of poorer emotional involvement with the infant and higher anxiety and depression at 3 months postpartum. It should be given more attention to mother's poor emotional involvement with the offspring during pregnancy, as it interferes with her emotional involvement with the infant and her psychological adjustment 3 months after childbirth.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVES: There is an inconsistency within the literature concerning whether acute stress leads to an increase or decrease in mucosal immunity. One reason for the inconsistent findings is the use of laboratory ‘stress’ tasks that lack ecological validity. In addition, the majority of research has focussed on immune changes immediately before or after the stress-inducing task. In this research we used parachute jumping as an ecologically valid method of inducing acute stress coupled with psychological and physiological measures of stress on the day of the jump and seven days before and after it. METHODS: 28 novice tandem jumpers participated in this study along with 31 non-parachute controls. The parachutists completed a daily questionnaire assessing levels of stress and provided a 2-minute unstimulated saliva sample on each of the seven days before the parachute jump, the day of the jump and the seven days after the jump. The control participants also completed the daily stress questionnaire and provided a saliva sample for 15 consecutive days. A sub-group of 12 parachutists provided saliva samples before and after the parachute jump. Saliva samples were analysed for cortisol, a measure of physiological stress, and immunoglobulin A (IgA), a measure of mucosal immunity. RESULTS: There were significant and substantial increases in IgA and cortisol following the jump indicating that the parachutists found the experience stressful and that this lead to an increase in mucosal immunity. These increases seem transient as there was no indication of any physiological or psychological change in the evening measures on the day of the jump or the days that followed. CONCLUSIONS: Using an ecologically valid acute stressor we found evidence of a substantial increase in mucosal immunity. This increase is brief and within an hour IgA levels are back to normal with no evidence of suppressed IgA in the days that follow. Acute stressful situations appear to provide a brief enhancement of the mucosal immune system with no evidence of any detrimental effects.

Title:	An investigation of effects of dreams on physiological measures of stress

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVES: Part 1 - to compare morning salivary cortisol response, sleep questionnaires and dream reports between patients with parasomnias, normal subjects and patients with insomnia. Part 2 – to pilot the use of automatic blood sampling overnight for cortisol assay synchronized with polysomnography in 6 normal subjects, to assess the minute by minute effect of sleep stage on cortisol measures, and to compare morning dream reports with plasma cortisol and salivary cortisol on awakening. METHODS: Part 1 - patients with sleep disorders and healthy good sleepers were provided with a pack containing cotton swabs for saliva sampling and overnight sleep and dreaming questionnaires. Patients with parasomnias were sent sample kits for 2 nights, 1 with and 1 without an episode (eg night terror). 16 patients and 15 healthy good sleepers returned the packs and salivary cortisol concentration was measured in-house using radio-immunoassay. Part 2 - 6 healthy volunteers slept in the sleep laboratory. An automated sampling machine has been developed at Bristol University to minimise interference with study subjects when taking blood samples. They were prepared for polysomnography (PSG) and had an indwelling cannula connected ‘through the wall’ to the sampling machine. Blood samples (1ml) were taken every 10 minutes, synchronised with the PSG recording. Samples were later assayed for cortisol. Sleep was scored and the cortisol levels related to different sleep stages. RESULTS: Part 1- morning cortisol response was as expected in healthy normal sleepers with a rise between waking and 30 minutes later. Insomnia patients and parasomnia patients on a ‘good’ night had a similar response with both readings being slightly higher. On the ‘bad’ nights readings were very variable with no consistent rise between the 2 time periods. Waking cortisol levels correlated with complaints of waking too early. Dream report analysis will be presented. Part 2 – synchronized hypnograms and cortisol profiles will be presented. Cortisol levels fell during the first few hours of sleep and then showed a rise independent of sleep stage about halfway through the night, consistent with the literature. In addition, both awakenings and REM sleep tended to increase cortisol level. Awakening cortisol response occurred from any stage of sleep and at any time of day. CONCLUSIONS: Part 1 - Insomnia and parasomnia subjects had higher cortisol levels than controls but this was not statistically significant. However we demonstrated a significant relationship between cortisol levels and subjective measures of sleep quality and early awakening. Dreaming effects will be discussed. Part 2 – The automatic sampling method was reliable and effective in obtaining frequent cortisol samples without interfering with sleep. There was evidence of both circadian and sleep-stage-dependent regulation of night-time cortisol level.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Animal telepathy experiments with rabbits previously realized have shown maintenance of the erythrocyte integrity and a bradycardia effect followed by a significant decrease of plasma cortisol levels [1]. A feedback control mechanism by cortisol regulate this own synthesis and in consequence its plasma level is known. The aim of this work was to verify at hippocampus the amount of cortisol binding to glucocorticoid receptors of the rabbits submitted to telepathy. The telepathy experiments were performed in 2 couples of rabbits with simultaneously arterial plethysmography monitorization for each couple; one scared with blow on the nose and other not scared. The arterial plethysmography monitorization, lactate and cortisol plasma concentrations were determined, as well as AChE erythrocyte activity as a marker of membrane integrity. Imunohistochemical analysis of rabbit hippocampus tissue sections for glucocorticoid receptors was performed in all rabbit’s couples. The results obtained by plethysmography were analysed by wavelet analysis in which by fast fourier transform we obtain the low frequency (LF) and high frequency (HF), respectively parasympathic and sympathic nervous system information [2, 3]. The telepathy experiments showed that the scare was efficient on the rabbit in which has been done besides no changes in the LF/HF ratio was observed in the respective not scared rabbit .Cortisol and lactate concentrations and AChE erythrocyte activity showed no significant differences between the scared and the not scared rabbit. The imunohistochemical analysis of rabbit hippocampus showed an increased amount of the cortisol receptor binding in the scared rabbits and no differences between the not scared rabbit and the control group. In conclusion, besides the efficiency of the blowing as a scare, demonstrated by the differences in the LF/HF ratios and also by hippocampus cortisol binding receptor, our results don’t show evidence of telepathy between rabbits in these experimental conditions. Abstract/Results:	RESULTS: This study compared the daily pattern of cortisol secretion in winter and in summer between two groups; participants with seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and age and sex-matched healthy controls. The diurnal pattern of cortisol secretion was assessed across two consecutive days in summer, and two in winter. 52 participants completed the study with an equal number in each group. In both winter and summer, participants collected multiple saliva samples across the day to capture the cortisol awakening response (CAR) and declining levels across the day. In addition, state stress and arousal, perceived stress, anxiety and depression were assessed using validated questionnaires. The results indicated that SAD and control participants had similar psychological and cortisol profiles in summer. However, in winter, SAD participants reported greater depression, stress and anxiety compared with controls. In addition, they showed lower levels of arousal (i.e. more drowsy, tired and sluggish, less alert, active, energetic and stimulated) following awakening in the morning. The control group did not show seasonal changes in the pattern of cortisol secretion. By contrast, the CAR was significantly attenuated in SAD participants during winter months but not during the summer. There was no difference in cortisol levels during the rest of the day for SAD participants in winter. This study contributes to the understanding of the physiology of SAD and provides evidence for potential underlying pathophysiological mechanisms in SAD. It further substantiates the evidence that light therapy following awakening in the morning may be beneficial for SAD sufferers by increasing cortisol to normal levels, which in turn may alleviate symptoms.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: This study compared the daily pattern of free salivary cortisol secretion in winter and in summer between two groups; participants with self-assessed seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Fifty-two participants completed the study with an equal number in each group. The diurnal pattern of cortisol secretion was assessed across two consecutive weekdays in summer, and two in winter, with conditions being counterbalanced. On each study day participants collected multiple saliva samples in the domestic setting to capture the cortisol awakening response (CAR) and declining levels across the day. In addition, perceived stress, anxiety, depression, state stress and state arousal were assessed using validated questionnaires. There was no evidence for any seasonal changes in psychological data or cortisol pattern for the healthy control population. In summer, self-assessed SAD and control participants had similar psychological and cortisol profiles. In winter however, SAD participants reported greater depression, stress and anxiety, and lower levels of arousal. Furthermore, the CAR was significantly attenuated in SAD participants during winter months. There was no difference in cortisol levels during the rest of the day between controls and SAD participants in winter. In line with the above findings and previous research, there was an inverse relationship between the increase in cortisol following awakening and a measure of seasonality in winter. Furthermore in winter, a general dysphoria construct correlated inversely with the CAR, indicating that participants reporting greater depression, stress and anxiety and lower arousal, exhibited lower CARs. In conclusion, during the shortened photoperiod in winter, the cortisol response to awakening is attenuated in participants with self-assessed SAD in comparison to controls. These findings contribute to the understanding of the physiology of SAD.

Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world. Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results:	RESULTS: Objectives: The autotelic personality is associated with traits associated with positive mental and physical health outcomes. Furthermore, the autotelic personality was associated with a better functioning in daily life contexts. The aim of this study was to investigate whether autotelic personality characteristics are associated with experiential and physiological momentary responses to daily life contexts. Methods: Sixty-seven female college students from the University of Minho, Portugal, used the Experience Sampling Method during a week, completing questionnaires and collecting saliva samples 8 times daily. We performed multi-level analyses to investigate the effects of autotelic personality characteristics on subjective experience and cortisol secretion. Results: Autotelic students experienced lower negative affect and fatigue, and higher levels of engagement in daily life, than less autotelic students. In solitude, autotelic students did not experience heightened negative affect in solitude as their less autotelic individuals did. Although daily solitude was associated with heightened cortisol levels, we did not find a moderating effect of autotelic personality on cortisol levels in solitude. Conclusions: Current results shed new clues about the assessment of the psychophysiology of the autotelic personality. Findings help clarify how daily contexts influence the affective and neuroendocrine responses of individuals, contributing for future health outcomes. Discussion: We discuss future directions such as the inclusion of other physiological measures (e.g., salivary alpha-amylase) and the study of different moments in time to understand the effects of positive personality characteristics on processes such as adaptation and health outcomes.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: A Psicologia Positiva procura conhecer e desenvolver as qualidades e forças individuais que promovem a qualidade de vida óptima. É no quotidiano, através das experiências subjectivas que vivencia, que o indivíduo vai expressar as suas capacidades e construir a sua trajectória de vida pessoal. O Experience Fluctuation Model (EFM) explica a variação da experiência subjectiva tendo em conta a percepção subjectiva de desafios e competências, através de oito canais experienciais que diferem no tónus afectivo e no grau de activação mental e física. Este artigo tem como objectivos explorar as conexões entre a fisiologia e conceitos explorados pela Psicologia Positiva, através da revisão de alguma literatura já desenvolvida, compreender de que forma este modelo poderá expressar estados fisiológicos distintos de acordo com a experiência subjectiva do indivíduo, e como a vivência do quotidiano poderá reflectir ou ser reflexo de estados psicossociais e seus correlatos fisiológicos.

Title:	Optimal experiences in daily life and physiological patterns associated: Understanding the autotelic personality

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Objectives - The autotelic personality is associated with traits associated with positive mental and physical health outcomes. Furthermore, the autotelic personality was associated with a better functioning in daily life contexts. The aim of this study was to investigate whether autotelic personality characteristics are associated with experiential and physiological momentary responses to daily life contexts. Methods - Sixty-seven female college students from the University of Minho, Portugal, used the Experience Sampling Method during a week, completing questionnaires and collecting saliva samples 8 times daily. We performed multi-level analyses to investigate the effects of autotelic personality characteristics on subjective experience and cortisol secretion. Results - Autotelic students experienced lower negative affect and fatigue, and higher levels of engagement in daily life, than less autotelic students. In solitude, autotelic students did not experience heightened negative affect in solitude as their less autotelic individuals did. Although daily solitude was associated with heightened cortisol levels, we did not find a moderating effect of autotelic personality on cortisol levels in solitude. Conclusions - Current results shed new clues about the assessment of the psychophysiology of the autotelic personality. Findings help clarify how daily contexts influence the affective and neuroendocrine responses of individuals, contributing for future health outcomes. Discussion: We discuss future directions such as the inclusion of other physiological measures (e.g., salivary alpha-amylase) and the study of different moments in time to understand the effects of positive personality characteristics on processes such as adaptation and health outcomes.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: The social context can impact psychological and physiological functioning. Being alone, in particular, is experienced as more negative on average than being with others, in both normative and pathological populations. This study investigates whether daily solitude is associated with changes in cortisol and, if so, whether momentary and trait affect can explain this relationship. Forty-four female college students used the Experience Sampling Method during a week, completing questionnaires and collecting saliva 8 times daily. Effects of current solitude, affect, and trait affectivity on cortisol were tested with multilevel regression. Cortisol levels were significantly higher when individuals were alone. Although momentary affective states changed during solitude and were also associated with cortisol, they did not fully explain the effects of solitude on cortisol. Trait affectivity moderated the association between solitude and cortisol. Findings may help clarify how daily experience may heighten risk of depression or other negative health outcomes in vulnerable individuals.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: This study investigated the relationship between cortisol secretion and hippocampal volume in first-episode psychosis and healthy controls. Hippocampal volume was measured by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 24 first-episode psychosis patients and in 18 healthy controls, together with diurnal cortisol levels. Twelve patients received a second MRI scan at 3-month follow-up. Diurnal cortisol levels were inversely correlated with left hippocampal volume in patients, both at baseline and at follow-up, while no correlation was found in controls. Our findings suggest that smaller hippocampal volume in first-episode psychosis can partly be explained by stress-related processes in the brain, as measured by cortisol hyper-secretion.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment, particularly in memory and executive function, is a core feature of psychosis. Moreover, psychosis is characterized by a more prominent history of stress exposure, and by dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. In turn, stress exposure and abnormal levels of the main HPA axis hormone cortisol are associated with cognitive impairments in a variety of clinical and experimental samples; however, this association has never been examined in first-episode psychosis (FEP). METHOD: In this study, 30 FEP patients and 26 controls completed assessment of the HPA axis (cortisol awakening response and cortisol levels during the day), perceived stress, recent life events, history of childhood trauma, and cognitive function. The neuropsychological battery comprised general cognitive function, verbal and non-verbal memory, executive function, perception, visuospatial abilities, processing speed, and general knowledge. RESULTS: Patients performed significantly worse on all cognitive domains compared to controls. In patients only, a more blunted cortisol awakening response (that is, more abnormal) was associated with a more severe deficit in verbal memory and processing speed. In controls only, higher levels of perceived stress and more recent life events were associated with a worse performance in executive function and perception and visuospatial abilities. CONCLUSIONS: These data support a role for the HPA axis, as measured by cortisol awakening response, in modulating cognitive function in patients with psychosis; however, this association does not seem to be related to the increased exposure to psychosocial stressors described in these patients.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Abnormalities in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity have been reported in patients with psychosis, but it is still unclear how these are related to the clinical symptomatology. Inconsistent findings have emerged from previous studies on the association between cortisol levels and clinical symptoms. Methodological and/or clinical factors, such as patients' diagnosis or illness phase, might partially account for these inconsistencies. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between HPA axis activity and clinical symptoms in first-episode psychosis, taking into account diagnosis and illness phase. METHOD: Saliva samples were collected in 55 subjects with first-episode psychosis to assess the Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR) and diurnal cortisol levels (AUC-DAY). Severity of symptoms was assessed with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Scores for subscales and symptom dimensions were used as predictors in multivariate analyses in different diagnostic subgroups and in clinically remitted patients. In addition, a systematic review of the literature on this topic was conducted. RESULTS: In subjects with schizophrenia (n=36), the CAR was predicted by the severity of positive symptoms (beta=0.47, p=0.04); in subjects with depressive psychoses (n=8) the CAR was predicted by excitement (beta=0.58, p=0.005), disorganization (beta=0.39, p=0.007) and depressive symptoms (beta=0.32, p=0.005). In patients with bipolar psychoses (n=11) AUC-DAY was predicted negatively by disorganization (beta=-2.82, p=0.009) and positively by excitement (beta=2.06, p=0.009) and positive symptoms (beta=1.28, p=0.02). In the sample in clinical remission (n=9), the CAR was associated with the severity of positive symptoms (beta=1.34, p=0.009) and, negatively, with excitement (beta=-1.05, p=0.04). The systematic review (on a total of 28 papers, including n=1022 patients), found that in patients with psychosis cortisol levels have been associated with the severity of multiple symptom dimensions. CONCLUSIONS: HPA axis activity is associated with the severity of multiple types of symptoms in first-episode psychosis. Patients' diagnosis and clinical phase partially influence these associations.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVES: This study compared the daily pattern of free salivary cortisol secretion in winter and in summer between two groups; participants with seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and age- and sex-matched healthy controls. The aim was to enhance theoretical understanding of the regulation of cortisol secretion over the day and contribute to the understanding of the pathophysiology and treatment of SAD. METHODS: Fifty-two participants completed the study with an equal number in each group. The diurnal pattern of cortisol secretion was assessed across two consecutive days in summer, and two in winter, with conditions being counterbalanced. On each study day participants collected multiple saliva samples in the domestic setting to capture the cortisol awakening response (CAR) and declining levels across the day. In addition, perceived stress, anxiety, depression, state stress and state arousal were assessed using validated questionnaires. RESULTS: In summer, SAD and control participants had similar psychological and cortisol profiles. In winter however, SAD participants reported greater depression, stress and anxiety, and lower levels of arousal (i.e. more drowsy, tired and sluggish, less alert, active, energetic and stimulated) following awakening in the morning. Furthermore, the CAR was significantly attenuated in SAD participants during winter months. There was no difference in cortisol levels during the rest of the day between controls and SAD participants in winter. In line with the above findings and previous research there was a negative relationship between the increase in cortisol following awakening and a measure of seasonality in winter. Participants who reported greater propensity for seasonal changes in mood exhibited an attenuated CAR in winter. CONCLUSIONS: In winter, when light levels are low the cortisol response to awakening is attenuated in participants with seasonal affective disorder in comparison to controls. This study provides a new understanding of the physiology of clinical condition and will inform treatment.

History:	In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology. Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries. The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project. The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665). Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others. The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Objectives: The autotelic personality is associated with traits associated with positive mental and physical health outcomes. Furthermore, the autotelic personality was associated with a better functioning in daily life contexts. The aim of this study was to investigate whether autotelic personality characteristics are associated with experiential and physiological momentary responses to daily life contexts. Methods: Sixty-seven female college students from the University of Minho, Portugal, used the Experience Sampling Method during a week, completing questionnaires and collecting saliva samples 8 times daily. We performed multi-level analyses to investigate the effects of autotelic personality characteristics on subjective experience and cortisol secretion. Results: Autotelic students experienced lower negative affect and fatigue, and higher levels of engagement in daily life, than less autotelic students. In solitude, autotelic students did not experience heightened negative affect in solitude as their less autotelic individuals did. Although daily solitude was associated with heightened cortisol levels, we did not find a moderating effect of autotelic personality on cortisol levels in solitude. Conclusions: Current results shed new clues about the assessment of the psychophysiology of the autotelic personality. Findings help clarify how daily contexts influence the affective and neuroendocrine responses of individuals, contributing for future health outcomes. Discussion: We discuss future directions such as the inclusion of other physiological measures (e.g., salivary alpha-amylase) and the study of different moments in time to understand the effects of positive personality characteristics on processes such as adaptation and health outcomes.
