History:	The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives. Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge. Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research. The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology. To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665). Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world. Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: This paper considers the influence of temperamental factors on the development of anxious symptoms in children and adolescents. About 20 percent of healthy children are born with a temperamental bias that predisposes them to be highly reactive to unfamiliar stimulation as infants and to be fearful of or avoidant to unfamiliar events and people as young children. Experiences act on this initial temperamental bias and, by adolescence, about one-third of this group is likely to show signs of serious social anxiety. These children are also likely to have one or more biological features, including a sympathetically more reactive cardiovascular system, asymmetry of cortical activation in EEG favoring a more active right frontal area, more power in the EEG in the higher frequency range, and a narrower facial skeleton. The data imply that this temperamental bias should be conceptualized as constraining the probability of developing a consistently fearless and spontaneous profile rather than as determining an anxious or introverted phenotype.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: We present a study with 10 subjects being exposed to three sessions of simulated heights in a virtual reality (VR) system. Among the participants we highlight a 66-year-old man blind in his left eye. The participants show significant progress in anxiety, avoidance, and behavior measurements when confronted with real height circumstances. The results obtained 1 year later at follow-up are statistically significant in the Behavioral Avoidance Test (BAT) and the Attitudes Toward Heights Questionnaire (ATHQ), but not the Acrophobia Questionnaire (AQ).

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: This paper discusses the current practice of using single word labels for emotional states that ignore the nature of the incentive, cognitive representations, physiologic profile, and especially the developmental stage of the agent. The universal cognitive advances that are derivatives of brain maturation over the first dozen years are accompanied by significant emotional states that infants and young children cannot experience. The cognitive transitions at the end of the first year, the middle of the second year, 5–7 years and early adolescence have special implications for affect states.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Development of the characteristics of social phobia often requires a diathesis in the form of a temperamental bias. A behavioral profile marked by vigorous motor activity and crying to unfamiliar stimuli at 4 months of age - called high reactivity- is characteristic of about 20% of healthy, Caucasian infants. This pattern predicts shy behavior in preschool children and symptoms of social anxiety at age 7, and, at age 11, a subdued personality and biological features that are consonant with a hypothesis of amygdalar excitability. The biological variables that best characterize the children who had been high-reactive infants are right-hemisphere activity in the electroencephalogram (EEC), a larger evoked potential from the inferior colliculus, higher sympathetic tone in the cardiovascular system, and larger event-related potentials to discrepant stimuli. About a quarter of 11-year-olds who had been high reactives displayed behavioral and biological characteristics that are in theoretical accord with the hypothesis of amygdalar excitability, while only 1 of 20 displayed a profile characterized by features in opposition to their temperament. The evidence points to a modest temperamental contribution to the development of symptoms currently regarded as diagnostic of social phobia.

Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: The discovery of pharmacologic interventions that mute the intensity of anxiety and guilt in some individuals has been a benevolent gift to those who suffer from these disabling states. Although some commentators have wondered about the social consequences of large numbers of asymptomatic persons taking these drugs, few have questioned the advantages for the smaller group of anguished patients. It is likely, however, that, during the next century, scientists will discover a drug that eliminates the feeling components of guilt and remorse while leaving intact the semantic knowledge that certain acts are ethically improper. An individual who took this drug regularly would continue to know that deceiving a friend, lying to a client, and stealing from an employer are morally wrong but would be protected from the uncomfortable feeling of guilt or remorse that accompanies a violation of a personal moral standard. It is reasonable to wonder, therefore, whether our society would be changed in a major way if many citizens were protected from guilt and remorse. Most Western philosophers, especially Kant, made reason the bedrock of conscience. People acted properly, Kant believed, because they knew that the behavior was morally right. All individuals wish to regard the self as virtuous and try to avoid the uncertainty that follows detection of the inconsistency that is created when they behave in ways that are not in accord with their view of the self's desirable attributes. Kant believed that, although the moral emotions restrain asocial acts, they were not necessary for the conduct of a moral life. On the other hand, some philosophers, such as Peirce and Dewey, argued that anticipation of anxiety, shame, and guilt motivate a continued loyalty to one's ethical standards. A person who was certain that he or she was protected from these uncomfortable emotions would find it easier to ignore the moral imperatives acquired during childhood and adolescence. It is not obvious that a drug that blocks remorse also will eliminate the mutual social obligations that make a society habitable; nonetheless, a posture of vigilance that is appropriate for--unlike gorillas--humans can hold representations of envy, anger, and dislike toward people they have never met for a very long time. While we wait for future inquiry to resolve this issue, it is useful to acknowledge that a satisfying analysis of this problem will require a deeper appreciation of the differences between the representations of the biological events that are the foundation of an emotion and the representations that define the semantic networks for the concepts good and bad.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: With the aim of studying anxiety, depression and prenatal emotional involvement with the infant, 87 primiparous women had fulfilled the Portuguese version of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and New Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale. High levels of anxious and depressive symptoms as well of emotional involvement with the infant were found. Anxiety seems to activate mother’s negative emotions toward the infant, but depressive symptoms account the more for the presence of not clear emotions and poor attachment to the infant.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Adverse effects of maternal anxiety and depression are well documented, namely on the foetus/child behaviour and development, but not as much attention has been given to the mother's emotional involvement with the offspring. To study mother's prenatal and postpartum stress, mood and emotional involvement with the infant, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and the Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale were filled in and cortisol levels were measured, 3 months before and 3 months after childbirth, in a sample of 91 Portuguese women. From pregnancy to the postpartum period, mother's cortisol levels, anxiety and emotional involvement toward the child decrease. No significant change was observed regarding mother's depression. Mother's depression predicted a worse emotional involvement before childbirth, while mother's anxiety predicted a worse emotional involvement with the infant after childbirth. Additionally, pregnant women with a worse emotional involvement with the offspring are at risk of poorer emotional involvement with the infant and higher anxiety and depression at 3 months postpartum. It should be given more attention to mother's poor emotional involvement with the offspring during pregnancy, as it interferes with her emotional involvement with the infant and her psychological adjustment 3 months after childbirth.

Title:	Cognitive impairment in pain through amygdala-driven prefrontal cortical deactivation

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT; Cognitive deficits such as impaired decision-making can be a consequence of persistent pain. Normal functions of the intact amygdala and prefrontal cortex are required for emotion-based decision-making that relies on the ability to assess risk, attribute value and identify advantageous strategies. We tested the hypothesis that pain-related cognitive deficits result from amygdala-driven impairment of medial prefrontal cortical (mPFC) function. To do this, we used electrophysiological single-unit recordings in vivo, patch-clamp in brain slices, and various behavioral assays to show that increased neuronal activity in the amygdala in an animal model of arthritis pain was accompanied by decreased mPFC activation and impaired decision-making. Further, pharmacologic inhibition (with a CRF1 receptor antagonist) of pain-related hyperactivity in the basolateral amygdala (BLA), but not central amygdala (CeA), reversed deactivation of mPFC pyramidal cells and improved decision-making deficits. Pain-related cortical deactivation resulted from a shift of balance between inhibitory and excitatory synaptic transmission. Direct excitatory transmission to mPFC pyramidal cells did not change in the pain model whereas polysynaptic inhibitory transmission increased. GABAergic transmission was reduced by non-NMDA receptor antagonists, suggesting synaptic inhibition was glutamate-driven. The results are consistent with a model of BLA-driven feed-forward inhibition of mPFC neurons. In contrast to the differential effects of BLA versus CeA hyperactivity on cortical-cognitive functions, both amygdala nuclei modulate emotional-affective pain behavior. Thus this study shows that the amygdala contributes not only to emotional-affective but also cognitive effects of pain. The novel amygdalo-cortical pain mechanism has important implications for our understanding of amygdala functions and amygdalo-cortical interactions.

Abstract/Results:	RESULTS: The objective of this study was the investigation of the relationship between spirituality, magical/paranormal ideation and religious coping in an unselected population of patients with OCD or another anxiety disorder. The sample for this study was recruited in the Department of Anxiety Disorders in the University Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy in Hamburg, Germany. Psychometric data have been collected by the Revised Paranormal Belief Scale, Magical Ideation Scale and Brief Multidimensional Measure of Religiousness/Spirituality in patients with OCD (n=49), other AD (n=36) and healthy samples (n=35). The preliminary results showed no significant differences among the three groups with respect to the most factors, as well as no significant differences between the OCD and the anxiety groups in all factors. The only statistical significant difference was found between Healthy and non-Healthy individuals with respect to the factor of negative coping, whereby the healthy samples reached lower scores in negative religious coping than the anxiety and OCD groups. Our study does not support prior studies, suggesting an important role of these traits in the etiopathogenesis of anxiety and OCD. On the other hand, our study validated prior study results showing a significant correlation between negative religious coping and both anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders. Our results underline a possible major role of negative religious coping in anxiety disorders and support a potential incorporation of R/S aspects in the psychotherapeutic treatment, targeting mainly better cognitive coping strategies for patients.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Background In the last decades the relationship between religiosity/spirituality (R/S), personal beliefs and mental health has been extensively studied, indicating a significant correlation of these variables. However, the specific relation of R/S to anxiety disorders has been less investigated. Objective The objective of this prospective study is the investigation of the relation of R/S, magical ideation (MI) and paranormal beliefs (PB) to anxiety disorders in general and OCD in particular, in order to specifically determine a possible impact of these variables on psychopathology scores. In addition, the relation between R/S, PB and MI can be systematically investigated. Design & method Unselected samples with OCD and other anxiety disorders have been equally assessed within the first week after admission with a face-to-face interview including the following instruments: MINI, HAMD, HAMA and Y-BOCS, OCI-R, STAI, Brief Multidimensional Measure of Religiosity/Spirituality, Magical Ideation Scale and Revised Paranormal Beliefs Scale. Forty healthy participants with no psychiatric history served as controls. Results Groups did not differ in any aspect of R/S, MI, or PB. Almost all scales referring to R/S, PB and MI were positively correlated to each other. The results showed a strong positive correlation between high scores of negative religious coping and high psychopathology scores in depression and anxiety. On the other hand, there was a significant positive correlation between MI scores and initial OCD and anxiety scores. Conclusion This study verifies a significant correlation between personal beliefs and psychopathology in OCD and anxiety disorders. Implications for further research are discussed.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: In two experiments, we examined affective responses and attentional bias toward threat. We compared three dimensions of affective responses (subjective, expressive, physiological) to negative and neutral stimuli in high and low anxious participants and examined whether these responses correlated with attentional interference in an emotional Stroop task. We used an evaluative conditioning procedure to manipulate the affective value of stimuli subsequently used in a Stroop task. We measured facial EMG (Experiment 1), skin conductance (Experiment 2), and subjective evaluations (both experiments). High anxious participants displayed Stroop interference from negatively conditioned stimuli. Both high and low anxious participants showed increased facial expressions and physiological arousal to negatively conditioned stimuli during the Stroop task. Findings suggest that differences between high and low anxious participants are more important in the cognitive processing of threat than affective reactions to threat.

Title:	Final report - Event-related brain potential correlates of conscious and non-conscious processing in anxiety

Abstract/Results:	RESULTS: An adaptation paradigm was used for Experiment 1 (N=40 in final sample), where fear-neutral morphed expressions were classified for affect after exposure to either fear or neutral faces. There was a shift towards ‘fearful’ classifications of morphs following neutral compared to fear adaptation. ERP data analysis revealed a more pronounced late positive potential (LPP), beginning at ~400 ms post-stimulus onset, in high but not low anxious people following neutral compared to fear adaptation. As behavioural adaptation increased there was a linear augmentation in the magnitude of the late-LPP. These effects were apparent for trait and state anxiety, and for depression. These data show that negative moods are associated with increased sensitivity to visual contextual influences from top-down elaborative modulations, as reflected in an enhanced LPP deflection. In two oddball experiments, irrelevant emotional expressions were presented outside of (Experiment 2, N=13 in final sample) or within (Experiment 3, N=15 in final sample ) focal attention. The neurophysiological markers for emotional processing (LPP, Early Posterior Negativity [EPN]) were observed when the irrelevant emotional expressions were the focus of attention (Experiment 3) but eliminated when outside of focal attention (Experiment 3). The visual mismatch negativity (vMMN), said to index automatic encoding violations of visual featural regularities, was observed for unattended happy emotional expressions but not for fearful ones. The ‘pre-attentive’ encoding of featural changes arose only for happy faces and not for other less featurally salient expressions, such as fear. These data suggest that spatial attention is involved in the direct modulation of non-perceptual processes relating to the evaluation of emotional significance.

Title:	Adaptation effects of emotional expressions in anxiety: Evidence for an enhanced late positive potential

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Prolonged exposure to a stimulus biases perception of a subsequent stimulus away from the adapting stimulus (Clifford & Rhodes, 2005). These aftereffects have been observed with a wide variety of stimuli, including facial identity (Rhodes & Jeffery, 2006) and emotional facial expression (e.g., Webster et al., 2004). In the current experiment, we used this paradigm to examine the effect of anxiety on the perception of emotional expression. Photographs of a male and a female model from the Karolinska Directed Emotional Faces set (KDEF; Lundqvist et al. 1998) were selected and a series of morphs created by interpolating a fear exemplar with a neutral exemplar for each model. A pilot study established a range of morphed expressions falling on either side of the fear/neutral boundary, and these were then used in the main study. There were 16 adaptation blocks in the experiment proper, and each block began with an adapting phase in which participants viewed (and categorized) 35 presentations of one endpoint from the morph continuum. This was immediately followed by a test phase, during which participants viewed and categorized 33 images of the same model (8 dummy trials, 5 top-up trials and 20 test trials – 10 from either side of the categorical boundary). We predicted that all test trials would be perceived as having an emotional expression opposite to that of the adapting stimulus (e.g., adaptation to fear would produce ‘neutral’ classifications for the test stimuli that were originally on the ‘fear’ side of the boundary). EEG was recorded using a NeuroScan NuAmps system, and stimulus presentation was controlled using E-Prime. An analysis of the behavioural classification data revealed that adaptation to fear created a shift in the classification of morphs towards ‘neutral’ and adaptation to neutral created a shift towards ‘fear’. This shift was equivalent in high and low anxiety. An analysis of the ERP data, however, revealed a more pronounced late positive potential in the high, but not the low, anxiety group following adaptation to neutral compared to fear, and this effect was particularly enhanced for male than female expressions.

Title:	Massaging premature infants: Effects on mothers and fathers

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Our aim was to study the impact of a massage protocol on the symptomatology and involvement of mothers and fathers with their preterm offspring admitted in the NICU. The specific goal was to study how the massage interfered in this relationship, as well as with other type of symptomatology, such as depression, anxiety. We decided to study this subject because in 2005 6,55% (7174) were born with less than 37 weeks and 0,88% (966) with less than 31 weeks; 7,5% (8209) weighed less than 2500g and 0,9% (1012) less than 1550g (INE, 2008), all of which are admitted to the NICU. PARTICIPANTS: 20 mothers and 20 fathers that had a preterm baby with less than 34 weeks and/or 1500g admitted to Júlio Dinis Maternity, Oporto Hospital Centre between July 2007 and December 2008. INSTRUMENTS: -EPDS - Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale -STAI - Stait Trait Anxiety Inventory -Bonding PROCEDURE: We assessed them in two stages: in the NICU they were asked for informed consent and given various questionnaires to answer – EPDS, STAI, and Bonding. A month later they were assessed again, using the same instruments from stage one. RESULTS: Taking this into consideration that our sample is not yet complete, the gender difference between subjects is not significant [F(3,9)=1,34;p=0,31] and either is the temporal variation between both moments [F(3,9)=1,65;p=0,23]. The interaction between times and gender was also not significant [F(3,9)=1,56;p=0,25], which shows that both men and women behave similarly. Between the first and second moment there were no significant differences in the STAI [F(1)=1,17;p=0,30], the EPDS [F(1)=3,14;p=0,10], the Bonding [F(1)=2,27;p=0,15] and the RQ [F(1)=3,24;p=0,09]. This also applies to the differences between gender, where STAI [F(1)=1,68;p=0,22], EPDS [F(1)=2,62;p=0,13], Bonding [F(1)=3,10;p=0,10] and RQ [F(1)=1,92;p=0,19] not significant. CONCLUSION: Our general our hypothesis was confirmed – over time the depressive and anxious symptoms decrease, although not significantly for now. The BONDING shows interesting results, while in the women it decreases over time, in the men it increases. This can be explained because of the time the baby in admitted in the NICU.
